@MrJuice18 I have a new Ruger Single Six 22 RF pistol,? With a 61/2" BBL & it has,a barrel for the 22 Magnum as well,? I am dying to try it out on Coyotes, & Woodchucks,? The first chance that I get.?
question...when hunting coyote with .22 mag ...is a head shot really the only practical shot on the game? or can a behind the shoulder shot prove to be plenty lethal too? Seems like there wouldn't be much of a trail to track with?? I just ask because here in Michigan "rifles" are not allowed to hunt with except .22 and black powder.
@pingpong49426 I have around 20 coyote hunts since this video was shot and have had no headshot opportunities but have taken 2 coyotes behind the shoulder. If I were only going for the super clean kills I'd still be hunting with no success. One of the kills came from a .22 WMR, a shoulder shot that dropped the coyote but still needed an finishing shot for a quick kill. I've had a lot of coyotes that come running in and run straight out with no opportunity for a clean kill. Buck shot time.
@Quadzilla010 I have a Savage in 17HMR. People say that you can be pretty successful out to 150 yards with the 17. Ive never gotten a shot that far, but anything less than 100 has worked pretty well for me.
@Quadzilla010 Nice video. Good clean shot. I have a .22 Winchester 94. Beautiful little gun, but I have not used it for coyote hunting. What do you think?
great vid nice looking rifle, i subb'd my brother and i have been waiting for a weekend off to get out and get some predator hunting on the property done, this weekend looks clear for both of us however the weather ehhhh not so much, iam hopeing the shitty weather passes us lol
head shots are stupid. retards, you know you can miss and take the jaw right off the animal, i dont like coyots, they kill alot of pets but thats life, if you dont like your animals being eatin keep them in the house
@EnergeticAsh why watch the vid then hunting is done to do pest control and keep the numbers down or thay mite go into the city and do more damage to pet's or go throgh your garbage and thay kill live stock if you people keep complaining about us hunting to keep wild animals (all animals are dangerous including deer) out of populated areas then take down every city because your in there home
@EnergeticAsh For people who lack practice with their firearm, they should never shoot for the head. That would be stupid because you'd miss! I shoot for the head only when it feels right. I feel better when the coyote is looking at me rather than looking away. FYI, varmint rounds are designed to be highly fragmental. The round basically explodes on impact especially when it contacts bone. Face to face shot to the jaw = one dead coyote!
@EnergeticAsh so what your saying is you suck to much to hit your target under 70 yards lol stay at the range bro you need more practise i can hit a tennis ball every time from all field positions with all my rifles at 100 yards lol instead of bitching get out and start shooting this guy in the vid obv has way more skillz than you.
@six1pack1zack Not always. If you hit JUST behind their shoulder it will hit them in heart and kill shot as well. A head shot is just a very clean kill shot.
how far of a shot was that? i plan on hunting yotes with my savage model 03 22 wmr this winter and was wondering how far of a kill shot you can make with it?
@skidoomxz550 That shot was around 45 yards. Everybody has different levels of accuracy, I can shoot 1 inch groups at 80 yards in my hunting position and thats my max for head shots. Behind the shoulder at 100 yards under perfect conditions I might consider. My 33 grain JHP in my opinion would be to light for long shots, a 45 grain hollow point would have more punch at longer distances. Bullet placement is king! A well placed shot in the vitals will terminate anything. Good hunting!
@Hoschi0913 I have the skins professionally tanned, and when I have enough hides I'll have them sewed together to make a blanket. Most skins can be sold anywhere from $35-$80 depending on the quality of the fur and the market. I feel my furs are far to valuable to sell for market value so I keep them.
Good shooting for sure! It's nice to see a guy that practices and can use a round to it's full potential without mounting a high magnification scope. Thanks for the vid and kudos to the camera operator too. Nice work.
@dylaninLG The .22 lr is a great round for practice and small rodents. If you're a trapper then that would be the gun you carry, but for coyote hunting leave that gun at home. :)
@dylaninLG It must work for something if in some places in NH night-time coyote hunters have that as an option. I would say headshots at no farther than 50 yards and be ready for a quick follow up shot if needed. If you have any larger firearms, pistol, muzzleloader, shotgun or whatever use those instead, just make sure of whats legal. Good luck.
@dylaninLG Would it work? Yes. Is it the recommended round by most hunters? No. But, a well placed .22 shot will put a yote down just as quick as a well placed .223.
I'm just starting to get into coyote hunting and was thinking about getting a .22 mag. With that gun, are you only limited to head shots, or would a shot to the vitals kill them as well?
@tylerhomie1 A well placed shot under a 100 yards behind the shoulder will kill a coyote, but it will run! I carry two guns when I coyote hunt, .22 mag and a .243 which I use for the longer shots. Shoulder shots drop coyotes in there tracks with center fire rifles. If you hunt only with a .22 mag you're going to have some missed opportunities in the field due to range and coyotes don't come easy.
Respect from BC Canada. Great hunt. The .22 WMR is my favorite caliber. I own a fairly cheap Marlin 925M and love it. Where do you hunt, and what species? Keep hunting hard !!!!!! Great video. A+
@bistchen Thanks for the positive comment! I hunt all over southern Alberta from bighorn ram to pheasants with my German Wire-haired Pointer. This season I have permission from a landowner to hunt wolves in the Drayton Valley area.
I also like the Tripod you're using, but I doubt I'll pay anything over $50 bucks for one. They just love do gouge the consumer for these small things. I suppose even a bi-pod would work equally well. If you like, Midwayusa sells em for $115, with red tightening screws...what a rip-off!
Open for suggestions, which I may just build one and when finished, use it as fuel for the fire.
@1LonePuma The bog pod is expensive but the quality and mechanics are worth it. I believe the tripod will last a long time making it a one time purchase. You can make your own bipod or tripod and still achieve the accuracy you're looking for but the telescopic legs work well in deep snow and can be adjusted to any height.
@Quadzilla010: I believe you, I just feel we're being taken advantage of, but after it's all said and done, I suspect I'll yield to the demands of its expense...lolo
I've killed a couple of coyotes with the 17hmr, one at 20 yards in the chest, and one at about 75 yards in the chest with fmj, he ran about 350 yards before he died. Me and my wife searched until dark to find him. I was in experienced and now realized I was getting lucky with that setup. I shoot a 223 and a shotgun now but I've got a 22wmr with open sights for my wife if the opportunity presents itself. The 22wmr is definitely more powerful! Nice hunting.
nice kills sir could u effectivly hunt a coyote with a .22 lr and do you eat them or not i want to hunt one some day but i dont want to eat a dog and thats the issue for me
@frankie2234 22 WMR BTVS Savage 1x4 leupold scope, 33 grain winchester supreme hollow point, bog pod,Johnny Stewart's Attractor. hunting coyotes i practice in my hunting position, which is the sitting position. I can do one inch groups at 80 yards, which is my max distance when head hunting and thats how i base my range limit.
@79Testo Dynapoint 45 grain shot will work well in the head or chest on a coyote. I saw a recall on that round on the web, you might want to check it out.
@79Testo 50 grain bullet will easily take down a coyote at 100 yards. The heavier the round the more penetration, stick to a 100 yards or less and you'll have no problem dropping coyotes with well placed shots. I looked into the recall and it's old, 2006.
@Quadzilla010 Your 100% correct on that... more people lose there life to the 22 caliber L/R bullet then ->all<- over pistol cartridges combined... it's not a stopper, but it is a killer!
@mrpaintballdude1 It looks easy but what you didn't see are all those stands before this one. Lots of time driving, and sitting in below 0 temperatures with no success. Sometimes it comes easy and other times I go home skunked.
@Quadzilla010 All I have is a 300 MAG .22 longrifle and a shotgun. Do you think the .22 can kill one as easily at the .22 MAG if I shoot them in the head also??? Thankyou. I am going to post a video of a coyote I shot with my 300 MAG, and you can see why I wont to use a smaller caliber. LOL
i have to get something lighter soon i have been using my .308 for coyotes and every time i make a head shot well there is no head left so i think im going to go buy a 22 mag...
@BekkerOnGunsNHunting I have a video called "Coyote hunting hit & miss", where I made a head shot with a .243 and found it was a bit of an overkill. The .22 mag has been a clean killing weapon for me so far, it's easy on the ears and cheap to shoot.
@Quadzilla010 Props to your marksmanship! I feel the .22 mag is too weak for coyote, but that's my personal preference, if you make it work consistently and with no suffering then cool. I've heard of lots of hunters using the .17 Remington (not HMR or Mach2) to harvest coyote so it's certainly doable. Shot placement is king I guess. Maybe something to consider, though I'm certainly NO coyote expert.
@annabelleish The green painters tape on the end of the barrel is to prevent objects such as snow from entering. I often carry my gun on my shoulder with the barrel pointing down.
@79Testo A .22 magnum shoots faster and hits harder than the .22 long rifle. The .22 LR is great for target practice, and small game(squirrels, gophers etc.) Ruger 10/22 is a excellent semi-automatic gun and because the ammo is considerably cheaper than the .22 mag, I prefer to use it just for practice not for hunting.
@79Testo Yes, the CZ mag is expensive and a good scope can cost even more. The .22 mag is better round for larger varmints due to the heavier rounds, 30-40 grain rounds can easily be purchased at a slightly better price than the .17 HMR. The . Hornady in the 17 HMR offers a 17 grain bullet that's designed to explode on thin skinned varmints such as gophers, and CCI makes a 20 grain tip that still is too light in my opinion to break bone. A heavier round = more stopping power = .22 WMR
@Quadzilla010 hey do you think a .22lr will kill a coyote cuz there geting into my pig pens and killing baby pigs i dont just wont to hurt the thing i want to put it down
That's some amazing countryside up there. I've just pick up the 17HMR heavy barrel vision of your gun. It's a huge improvement over my 22LR. Keep up the great vids. I want to get a good camera so I can get some footage too.
@themattlyone When hunting coyotes i practice in my hunting position, which is the sitting position. I can do one inch groups at 80 yards, which is my max distance when head hunting and thats how i base my range limit. Remember we're dealing with light bullets that can be effected by wind, and other factors. .22's lose a lot of their kinetic energy past 100 yards. The heavier the bullet the more foot pounds of energy
@goldennear713 The size of scope for your 17 hmr depends on the distance you plan to shoot. For shots under 100 yards a 1x4 will do, 100-200 yds a 3x9 would suffice. If you want to see the shots hit the paper go even bigger, example 3x14. The scope makes the gun, don't go cheap.
@pestkilla14 Drift innovation HD 170. I find shooting in 1080p is the best for picture quality but harder on battery life. The camera also does not zoom in 1080p, it only zooms in 720p and even then the picture quality becomes effected. Other than that this camera has taken a lot of abuse and is still functioning, I paid around $300 CDN. I think a head-cam and another cameraman would make for some cool editing.
How far away were those head shots.?

@Quadzilla010 Your 100% correct on that... more people lose there life to the 22 caliber L/R bullet then ->all<- over pistol cartridges combined... it's not a stopper, but it is a killer!

the guy in this vid is a good hunter i mean killing a coyote with a .22 with one shot
mrpaintballdude1 4 months ago
@mrpaintballdude1 It looks easy but what you didn't see are all those stands before this one. Lots of time driving, and sitting in below 0 temperatures with no success. Sometimes it comes easy and other times I go home skunked.

@Quadzilla010 i wasnt being sarcastic i really think youre a good hunter

@Quadzilla010 All I have is a 300 MAG .22 longrifle and a shotgun. Do you think the .22 can kill one as easily at the .22 MAG if I shoot them in the head also??? Thankyou. I am going to post a video of a coyote I shot with my 300 MAG, and you can see why I wont to use a smaller caliber. LOL
TheWildBunny69 4 months ago
i have to get something lighter soon i have been using my .308 for coyotes and every time i make a head shot well there is no head left so i think im going to go buy a 22 mag...
BekkerOnGunsNHunting 4 months ago
@BekkerOnGunsNHunting I have a video called "Coyote hunting hit & miss", where I made a head shot with a .243 and found it was a bit of an overkill. The .22 mag has been a clean killing weapon for me so far, it's easy on the ears and cheap to shoot.
Quadzilla010 4 months ago
I would never have thought to use a 22 mag for fear of getting a bad shot but you proved me wrong... well done:-)

you ever think of a .17 cal. I have one and love it
notagrd 4 months ago
@notagrd The .17 cal rounds are too light for my liking, but they fly faster and are super accurate!
Quadzilla010 4 months ago
@Quadzilla010 the way your shootin, a 17 would be your gig. i'm 'subn'. keepin an eye on you
notagrd 4 months ago
@Quadzilla010 Props to your marksmanship! I feel the .22 mag is too weak for coyote, but that's my personal preference, if you make it work consistently and with no suffering then cool. I've heard of lots of hunters using the .17 Remington (not HMR or Mach2) to harvest coyote so it's certainly doable. Shot placement is king I guess. Maybe something to consider, though I'm certainly NO coyote expert.
Paganwarrior2000 4 months ago
@Quadzilla010 I've also found that .17 HMR's are usually a little more expensive than a 22 mag, mostly because the manufacturers are pretty limited.
Wilson1592 4 months ago
@notagrd daaaamn rights 17.cal's are the best , bought one few years ago, i will never ever go back to a 22.cal

@annabelleish The green painters tape on the end of the barrel is to prevent objects such as snow from entering. I often carry my gun on my shoulder with the barrel pointing down.

Is the .22 mag better than a Ruger 10/22 LR rifle?
79Testo 6 months ago
@79Testo A .22 magnum shoots faster and hits harder than the .22 long rifle. The .22 LR is great for target practice, and small game(squirrels, gophers etc.) Ruger 10/22 is a excellent semi-automatic gun and because the ammo is considerably cheaper than the .22 mag, I prefer to use it just for practice not for hunting.
Quadzilla010 6 months ago
@Quadzilla010
I was thinking of getting a CZ .22 mag.....wow expensive
do you think the .22 mag is better than the .17 HMR?
I want a gun that will be used for hunts like you do with coyotes
79Testo 5 months ago
@79Testo Yes, the CZ mag is expensive and a good scope can cost even more. The .22 mag is better round for larger varmints due to the heavier rounds, 30-40 grain rounds can easily be purchased at a slightly better price than the .17 HMR. The . Hornady in the 17 HMR offers a 17 grain bullet that's designed to explode on thin skinned varmints such as gophers, and CCI makes a 20 grain tip that still is too light in my opinion to break bone. A heavier round = more stopping power = .22 WMR
Quadzilla010 5 months ago
@Quadzilla010 hey do you think a .22lr will kill a coyote cuz there geting into my pig pens and killing baby pigs i dont just wont to hurt the thing i want to put it down
AlmostReality1 5 months ago
@AlmostReality1 Trappers use .22lr's to finish the job. I personally wouldn't use that caliber on anything bigger than a ground hog.
Quadzilla010 5 months ago
@Quadzilla010 thanks for the info they been tearing up my piglets
AlmostReality1 5 months ago
That's some amazing countryside up there. I've just pick up the 17HMR heavy barrel vision of your gun. It's a huge improvement over my 22LR. Keep up the great vids. I want to get a good camera so I can get some footage too.

what range can a 22 mag rifle be effective on a coyote?
themattlyone 8 months ago
@themattlyone When hunting coyotes i practice in my hunting position, which is the sitting position. I can do one inch groups at 80 yards, which is my max distance when head hunting and thats how i base my range limit. Remember we're dealing with light bullets that can be effected by wind, and other factors. .22's lose a lot of their kinetic energy past 100 yards. The heavier the bullet the more foot pounds of energy
Quadzilla010 7 months ago
what size scope do you use?? because i have a 17 hmr and i am not sure exactly what size would need for the range?
goldennear713 10 months ago
@goldennear713 The size of scope for your 17 hmr depends on the distance you plan to shoot. For shots under 100 yards a 1x4 will do, 100-200 yds a 3x9 would suffice. If you want to see the shots hit the paper go even bigger, example 3x14. The scope makes the gun, don't go cheap.
Quadzilla010 10 months ago
@Quadzilla010 thank you i whave 1x4 on it right now but i am going to get a 3x9 just so i can have that distance if i need it
goldennear713 10 months ago

Around 45 yards.
Quadzilla010 11 months ago
nice shooting. and the quality is great what camera do you use and whats the price ? im gonna make hunting videos soon.
pestkilla14 1 year ago
@pestkilla14 Drift innovation HD 170. I find shooting in 1080p is the best for picture quality but harder on battery life. The camera also does not zoom in 1080p, it only zooms in 720p and even then the picture quality becomes effected. Other than that this camera has taken a lot of abuse and is still functioning, I paid around $300 CDN. I think a head-cam and another cameraman would make for some cool editing.
Good hunting!
