Probably the tension in the recording session partly accounts for the artistic success.
It wouldn't be too far fetched to say that this collaboration between Soviet artists and the western musicians paved the way to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
A great conductor is a great leader.Without Karajan this great work was not so great before.Really the greatest star was the great Maestro.I like the other great artists too and are among my favourites too.
Not only was Richter not pleased with this recording, the other two Russian maestros expressed the same dissatisfaction after the recording. I'm happy to see someone has uploaded another collaboration by the three Russian music titans but conducted by Kondrashin in Moscow in 1970. The accompaniment was a lot better, or at least more appropriate.
Richter wasn't pleased with the final outcome of this "experiment", and in documentary made in the 90's he even resented the photo shoot that accompanied the release, or the premiere, saying that them three Russians "looked like idiots smiling" out of courtesy.
@yulkatx it is not a very serious asseveration, 30 years after the recording it can only be just a curious remark. Richter did not like the rigidity of Karajan's methods, and general inflexibility in regards to creative suggestions. Bear in mind, these men were his equals. And, yes, the whole experience was too much market orientated (commercial) for Richter's taste, if my memory serves me right.
on occasion artists are too picky for their own good, n'est pas? this is a superb recording that will last beyond petty squabbles. oh sweet analog. this upload cuts off abruptly at the end, alas. hope it gets reloaded. of course they may have had good reason to squabble, but this is just too lovely. commercial or not.
@northbeachfilms bear in mind that I did not express a personal opinion on the quality of the recording, but rather paraphrase an opinion of Richter's.
indeed! i liked getting the background info. thanks. also checked some recordings with just Richter and Rostropovich that i like much better. it is so great to have these available on youtube. happy holidays!
