To be honest, I don't think many people liked it at first, myself included, but after you listen to it all the way through once or twice, it's pretty awesome.
it's hard to compare the Mastodon albums because they all have their different elements, I love all of their albums but I can't choose which I would decide as my favourite...Leviathan, no CTS! arghh!!!
I saw them perform this whole album live and about half way through their set, you could consider yourself legally high from the sounds and imagery they were showing.
So im looking to buy an album to a band that i hardly never listen to. I've listened to some Mastodon like the song Blood Mountain and Blood and Thunder. I love both of those songs but I dont know which Mastodon album I should get?
Really? I thought Crack the Skye was much better than Blood Mountain. Musically though. I thought Blood Mountain was a lot heavier and had newer riffs.
This album was like a remix of a classic rock jam session.
Im so glad I had the privilage to see these dudes before leviathan came out. I had no Idea who they were, but they opened of Maiden. Ever since that show, I have loved these guys. Seen them five times now, and every show is better. Their progression in albums is increadible to say the least. If you like prog- metal, and are not familiar with all of their work, I suggest you check them out. Its time WELL spent. Cheers.
Love this album. It definitely is an album that needs to be listened to a few times to get the full effect because there is so much going on.
Crack the Skye and Blood Mountain are both tied for my favourite Mastodon album. But they are completely different records in that Blood Mountain has alot more riffs and technical playing, but (for me at least) in Crack the Skye you can really hear the emotion and quality song writing coming through.
@jumblejunkiemusic you didn't really say "in my opinion" before making that claim..i'm probably the biggest mastodon fan u'll ever come across and I think this album ties with (or even beats) blood mountain!!!
@jumblejunkiemusic Exactly, nicely said. Blood Mountain is very amazing, probably my favourite METAL album ever (i guess you COULD call it sludge even though its not as sludgy as the previous releases). And Crack The Skye is my favourite progressive metal album ever, they are very different (blood mou..,crack th..) but thats what great bands do, they change up their sound ever piece, and since remission they've done just that. Cant wait for the next release, coming out this year!!
@EtherealWaves I've got blood mountain and I thought it had a couple good songs but this CD in my opinion is so much better than their other stuff. But then again before this cd I wasn't a huge Mastodon fan. I thought they were really talented but this cd is absolutley amazing.
@EtherealWaves Im a huge blood mountain fan, but I would say crack the skye is even better. Leviathan is still my top though.. that album is just sooo raw and brutal. then the last couple melodic songs to end it off.. ahh, thats some good listinin'
i think the same, for me Mastodon gets better with each album
Remission was great, than they got better in Leviathan which was really awesome, than they reached almost perfection with Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye reached perfection, im sure their next album will be even better than perfection
its almost impossible for a band to start as well as Mastodon did in Remission and then just get better and better with each album, thats why theyre the best band of these last 10 years in my opinion
@MetalHeadFilipeG96 I have to save hat 'best - 10 years' for TMV but that's me haha, yeah they got more experimental with each release, you could say better but I prefer the sound they had on the first two and blood mountain over crack the skye - thinking about it, Leviathan and Remission sound nothing like the other two, they had that epic sludgey sound on the first two where they'd use a lot of opens (guitar), the second two sound much more watered down, that's not necc bad just different
@EtherealWaves Man, all four album are very unique in a different way, as intended by their artists. I'd abandon that asshole attitude before having a real conversation about music.
It's still a great album. I have to hand it to Mastodon to go in a different direction and still make it work. Great guitar solos on this album, by the way.
thank god u did an awesome review lol blood mountain is much better, leviathan is 2nd, Skye is 3, and Remmission 4th. Kudos to u on this review and to the Napalm death one
not as good as blood mountain?! this isnt what we have really come to know vocal wise from them, but this album was amazing. you obviously dont need to be reviewing shit. haha
Yeah, Mastodon got bored with the straight-ahead rah rah metal thing and took it up a couple clicks by implementing even more progressive songwriting like their heroes in Yes and Rush. To me, they're breaking ground as a hard-rock prog band and covering so much ground that it literally takes a while to digest it all and 'get it'... once it arrives it's a total headrush of 'HOLY SHIT!!!' The guys really outdid themselves, their next album is going to be absolutely phenomenal, bank on it folks.
@jumblejunkiemusic Yeah the album really grows on you over time. I didn't care for it too much at first but as time passed I listened to it more and more. And now, its my all time favorite album. I love Mastodon
@Gerritspartan69 The same happened to me. I didn't understood it at first. Lucily, I'm not just a metalhead, but a rock music fan. So as a metal album... previous ones were better, but as a rock album (and always remember: metal is just a sub-genre of rock) is their BEST!
The more i listen to it the more i really like it. It is much different than Blood Mountain but probably will be the top metal record this year for sure
Speaking of Rush has any1 noticed that Mastodon seem to have copied and pasted YYZ into "The Last Baron" at 6.00-6.30. The cymbal sound at 6.22 is also exactly the same. I think Mastodon said they were into Rush at some point. If so this is a blatant tribute!
yeah its exactly the same- i think they were looking to do an homage to rush if you get what i mean; they kind of expected people to notice and say "ah mastodon tipping their hat to rush"...i really doubt that they thought they could copy note for note a distinct rush riff and not have people notice
Crack the skye is their best..IMO
