  • I live in the Sydney metro area! How exciting! How much do you charge and you supply hair and all yeah? I'm a hairdresser and I just have a Mohawk I wanna get done :)

  • @TheConnaire I can't supply you the dreads, but I can certainly give you some extra details on where to get them :) Send me an inbox!

  • Hey do you sell your dreads and if so where can I get them from? Also do you do installations?

  • @TheConnaire I haven't sold dreads in about 2 years, but I still install them in Sydney (metropolitan area only). You can find heaps of awesome dread sellers on the hair extensions forum (add a .com to it).

  • ...hairextensionsforum, no the :P

  • would u describe them as light or heavy?

  • @PimpMyParadigm Very light :)

  • im considering using wool cuz ordering all the hair for hair dreads is just so expensive :[

  • @Supersaiiyin I don't think wool is that much cheaper to be honest. Maybe a bit, but not by much.

  • Yeesh.. Seems like that's a LOT more work than synth. Is that just me? haha...

  • @themandikat Around the same amount either way :P

  • hey doll, i tried my hands at synths but there to heavy for my hair for falls. i did instal them on the bottom layers and they were great but my head didnt like it so i wana go back to falls so quick question :) i have white roving and wana dye it, perferably black and purple(mite leav a few the natural white/cream) but dnt no wat to dye wit? permenant hair dye?my freind used stargaver semi but they faded after a month.dnt wana use a dye dats gona run down my face cuz it rains ALOT in ireland :)

  • @LeashRox You have to use fabric dyes for that sort of stuff. Check out the hair extensions forum tutorial section, there's heaps of roving dyeing tuts and methods. And yes, you can use koolaid xD

  • how much wool roving do you need to make a full head?

  • @JoshieTripp That I have no idea about lol. Sorry!

  • do you need to have short-ish hair to install dreadfalls cos my hair (as seen in me profile picture on my page) basically is like an inch away from my tits

  • @zombyqueen Dread falls are the hair pieces, and it helps to have long hair to tie up. If you want to braid them in as an installation for longer term wear, it's possible with long hair, but takes way longer to braid in. I did an installation on a girl with hair about that long, took 6 hours for about 80 dreads! When I install the same amount on someone with shorter hair, it's more like 4 hours.

  • hay are u on face book by any chance i can mgs u on there if u want i"ll put some pictures up when fin

  • @scaringy Yes, I have a page on facebook - it's /rivetlicker

  • um its tork premium soap liquid mid its cheap stuff

  • @scaringy Hmm... Should work?

  • i have now made five and its taken me most of the day they just dont seam to want to dread right ,dam it wish mine looked like yours .

  • @scaringy You have to often felt roving twice or three times for a strong hold. What type of soap are you using?

  • hay im trying to make soe dreads fist time but i got merino wool for wet/dry felting and its takeing for eva to dread them up av i got the wrong wool ??????

  • @scaringy Yeah, that's the right wool. The water needs to be hot and soapy for it to work. Just takes a bit of practise.

  • where can i buy roving? an actualli what is this? i'm hungarian, an in the dictionary there isn't this word. can you help me? thanks

  • @TheVattacukor Try Etsy. It's wool from a sheep that has not been spun or felted, so it is also called "unfelted fleece", but do a search on etsy for roving wool and you'll be fine :)

  • pretty sure i may do thsi and save myself some money :)

and then sell some for more money might make a job out of it,

paaashaah i bet everyone does it :D loosk fun cant wait to give it a try

  • @BeautyBreeBear To be honest, there's not much money in it. Unless you're pumping out orders everyday, then it's a really hard market. Keep it as a hobby, it'll make it more fun! ;)

  • @DagGirl ok so i got like 40 bucks of syntheds and dreaded them but they were so heavy it hurt my head to wear them i think its cause i have made them wrong cause basically they look like crap, i cant dread synthetic hair for crap :0

  • @BeautyBreeBear They shouldn't be too heavy, unless they use a tonne of hair and are super thick. Definitely not killing your head heavy.

  • @DagGirl well i realised i hadnt made them properly so i am sealing them with hot water now

witch i never did in the 1st place hahahah that might help

  • @BeautyBreeBear Did you backcomb them well?

  • @DagGirl i think sooo !

i dunno at least i think so!

i may end up buying a pair if this fails

  • @BeautyBreeBear You know, it may be a good investment for training purposes too. You get to see what they look like, feel like and how they hold up. Just go to a good seller though.

  • it was great u dont suck ahha u taught me well

  • @REVERFo21 But I'm still a newb at roving :P

  • Excuse me... I didn't understand!

What is the white thing that you put into the water?

  • Haha ahhh your funny, thanks for the tip!

  • @maryheath17 I'm just a klutz that swears too much xD

  • the fallen cam was just a way of remembering this vid!

  • @kylblk3 Did any other content apart from the laptop falling off my ironing board get remembered? :P

  • Oh thanx anyways ... yeah I was challenged by my hippy friends to do dreads

Right from the smelly sheep wool lol its hard im lost and confuzzled but im not

Going to give up and they will look as awesome as they can XD

  • @BioGraver Ooh! You went from the stinky sheep!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @DagGirl yea man! right from spending 5 hours pulling smelly brown sheep wool apart for washing where the wool became white i still have to card and wash half and i also have to dye it then i can do what you did in your video. o.O and dread it ... drool...

  • @BioGraver You know you can purchase the wool already cleaned and in a long strip :P

  • @DagGirl yes man i know but it would be a challenge thats to eesy for me

  • @BioGraver Fair enough xD Have fun cleaning the wool :P

  • hi im boo. do you know much about carding wool and making them into dreads ?

see i am washing and carding the wool tonight by hand and maybe pulling an all nighter

any who i wanted to know if thats just spun wool after its been carded or is it felted then dreaded ??? i hope you understand my pickle.

    thanx

  • @BioGraver I have no idea what "carding wool" is, sorry :(

The dreading process of wool is actually wet felting. Soap + hot water makes wool shrink and the fibres shrink and stick together magically.

  • Hi, what does the soap do? and which is better to make and wear, roving dreads or kanekalon steamed dreads cheers!

  • @jemstar25 You know how when you wash wool in hot water with soap, it shrinks? Same concept :)

Personally? I prefer to wear kanekalon dreads in summer and roving in winter. There is no way I will wear roving in summer, way too hot!!!!!

  • what happens if it rains on them? wont you get soap suds running down your face?

  • @fenthedog You rinse them after felting a few times.

  • lol i feel sry for ur computer :)

  • Ahh, she still works a charm.

  • I would use protective gloves :)

  • I can't roll the roving with gloves on though.

  • I live in Brisbane and Lincraft is bloody fail D: I couldn't find anything other than little 6-colour packs with colours I didn't want, and straight black :c

  • Mhmm, that's where I got that bit of blue. All Lincrafts are a fail, but at least they have felting needles (I still bought mine off Etsy though haha).

Actually, try Etsy for roving. :)

I know my friends go to this wool farm out in the north west of Sydney to get theirs.

  • I'm just starting out doing this and I read somehwere you can use bicarbonate of soda, I may experiment with it but don't want to waste my wool. Have you tried this?

  • Nope! I wouldn't try it either. Soap is good enough for me :)

  • HA MARINO WOOL.

OH thats greeaat. My mom knits ALOT and even makes her own yarn out of woving, so I have my own personal supplies (Especially Marino wool)

  • Merino is awesome wool to work with. Australia exports the finest!

  • Yupp, and so is connections with people in Australia with Marino wool ;P

  • hey i was wondering were the hell do u get the felt from? :D oh and amazing vid by the by!lol x

  • You buy the roving wool from craft supplies, shearing guilds or online (Etsy being the preferred site as there's a tonne of DIY supplies on there).

LOL, I thought the production quality was a failure, but I couldn't be bothered doing it again.

  • great vid, definatly learned something

!! can you buy this wool at any craft store? im not sure if i missed it in the vid

  • Not so much any craft store. A lot of people buy it bulk off eBay or Etsy.

  • Hehe thanks :)

Please do post a video! It sounds like a much simplier way to do SE roving. The method that I'm aware of involves felting like normal and then creating a hole in one end.

I use felting needles for regular synth dreads as a binding aid!

  • Thanks for the tutorial ^-^. I want to make very thin cyrly wool dreads. Do you know if the best way is to roll them around a stick something when they are still wet or shall I let them dry first?

  • I don't really think that will work. I'm really not sure how to do curly roving.

  • Comment removed

  • I think when you felt it, you roll it in the opposite direction when it's still wet, so it like twist up, and then you let it dry it should be krinkly, I don't think you can get real curls like with synth dreads...

  • Comment removed

  • Ah, I'll try, thanks!

  • Crinkly roving can be achieved, but no idea how! I only know how to make basic roving.

  • How do you wear this, if your hair is already dreaded?

  • If you have enough unfelted (natural hair) space in your dread at the roots, then you can slide the dreads in there. It should stay.

  • felting is so awesome. you can make lots of cool stuff with it.

  • Oh yeah.

You should see some of the designs that some people have come up with! Stripes, swirls, creative dyeing.

  • i know its so cool. One time when i was felting i poked myself.

  • Hahaha, I don't use felting needles for wool.

  • so what do you use? because i hate geting poked. :(

  • Well, I wet felt (as this video suggests) wool. But then again, I rarely ever make roving dreads.

I use the felting needles for regular synthetic dreads.

  • oh okay

  • Yeah, there's wet felting (hot soapy water) and dry felting (needle).

  • thx for the advice. :D

  • hey, where do you buy synth fibre?

  • This isn't synth fibre, it is sheep wool aka roving. Ebay and etsy are good places.

  • thank you really helpfull : )

if i have have really long natural hair, how should i install these wool dreads ?

i've see some technique but this never look so good

  • Blanketstitch braid is probably the best! It reduces the braid to about 1/5 of the original length.

There is a playlist on my channel with the video tutorial just on blanketstitching. They made it a 6 part video, but yeah, it's really helpful!

  • YAY i just made my first roving dreads while watching this they look so good :D

i was worried about venturing away from synth but you made it look so easy :)

    thankyou

    x

  • It is easy, just a different method :P

I love synth, it's easy too xD

  • Oh than you so much!

  • You're welcome!

Wool + hot water + soap = shrinkage. That's why when you wash a wool jumper in hot water, it shrinks!

  • Sorry, I mean that white thing that from the box you put into the water!

    ;)

  • Oh, that was some soap flakes that I grated from a bar of soap.

  • Please can anyone tell me what's into that box?? I can't understand!

    Thank you!

  • It is roving wool (aka wool tops, unfelted fleece).

  • haha Lara you're so cute.

    "how embarrassing..."

  • Shit I dropped my computer! xD LOL :P

  • haha!

Hey, is a hot-to request on how to do wigs pushing it?

  • Yes LOL.

I have a wig base but like no hair.

Even though now I can actually work on it. SHEESH!

  • hi,im not very good in english,,but i didnt understand what you saying

I wanted to know what materials you use them here..

    Thank you soo much!:]

  • You need roving/wool top/unfelted fleece, there are plenty of names for it.

You'll need a bowl of hot, close to boiling water and some kind of soap.

  • thak you very much : )))

    you help me so muchhh

    :)

    have a great weekend

  • Thanks so much for this! I've always wondered how to make decent roving wool dreads and I haven't found anything that's as useful as this! =D

  • I've only ever seen written tuts, until somebody requested it.

Thank god I know how to make them.

They could've turned out a bit better. You have to actually repeat this about 2 or 3 times, the 2nd time in just hot water. Afterwards, rinse them to get the soap smell out and excess residue.

  • Thanks, I'll have to try it at some point.

  • yay!

I've always wondered how they did this!

It confused the nuts out of me just reading it, but it seems quite simple watching it!

    <3

  • Just don't put your computer on the same surface xD

At times like these, I wish I had a video camera!
