I'm not against the union but I've tried to point out to people for years that we compete on a world level and we can't keep up the artificially high wages forever. Detroit was still okay in the early 70s. Lots of hard working families and tidy houses. Now the city dwellers ruin all the property. And the stupid suburbanites steal from the houses. Instead of refurbishing those beautiful old homes, they went in and stripped them, buying up "parts" to put into their new homes (like the leaded glass, chandeliers, etc.). I think that Detroit is a dead city. I was born there in 68. My parents moved away in 1969. The decay was already starting. When I would go back in the 70's and 80's to visit family there were commericals on the local television about how Detroit was coming back. Everytime we visited you could see my grandparent's neighborhood gradually falling apart. My grandparents finally moved out in 92 and I've never been back since. Holy god I really didn't know it was that bad.

Anyway - This is real close to a perfect video. The song choice is excellent. It grabs your attention right at the start. Unfortunately there are better pictures that could have been used at certain points in relation to the song. Some of the pictures are a little anti-climatic. Should have made use of a few more old factory shots like those used at the tail end. The beginning of Detroit's downfall was "White Flight". Whites, not willing to live near blacks, fled to the suburbs resulting in empty houses, less tax revenue/investment, and the closure of many businesses. Any city that looses half of its population will have major problems.

Detroit does in fact have some of the wealthiest suburbs I have ever seen, I can't say anything about the country as a whole, but at least compared to cities like Toronto is has extremely wealthy suburbs, and extremely poor areas too, Detroit is a city of extremes, the lower and upper class are so far apart it's ridiculous, gated neighborhoods, million dollar homes, all ten minutes on 1-75 from something that looks like a bomb went off. In a way it's kind of beautiful, it's home.
Interesting of course. I have seen many of the abandoned Detroit vids. The city probably will recover over several decades a block at a time starting in the center. War torn Europe looked worse and came back. I seriously believe a tourist attraction could be made by fencing off twenty or thirty acres and having guided tours there with the ticket sales being used to rebuild.

I'm not against the union but I've tried to point out to people for years that we compete on a world level and we can't keep up the artificially high wages forever. Every single person always said the same basic thing, that the unions keep everybody's wages up. It may have been true for a while but now many jobs are completely gone. Why are the few companies we have left still here? They will leave too.

Detroit was still okay in the early 70s. Lots of hard working families and tidy houses. Now the city dwellers ruin all the property. And the stupid suburbanites steal from the houses. Sorry, they call it something with a "proper" name. Instead of refurbishing those beautiful old homes, they went in and stripped them, buying up "parts" to put into their new homes (like the leaded glass, chandeliers, etc.). I think that Detroit is a dead city. I was born there in 68. My parents moved away in 1969. The decay was already starting. When I would go back in the 70's and 80's to visit family there were commericals on the local television about how Detroit was coming back. Everytime we visited you could see my grandparent's neighborhood gradually falling apart. My grandparents finally moved out in 92 and I've never been back since. Holy god I really didn't know it was that bad.

Unfortunately there are better pictures that could have been used at certain points in relation to the song. Some of the pictures are a little anti-climatic. Should have made use of a few more old factory shots like those used at the tail end. The one of the people picking through the ruins in the driving snow is especially good but should have been used 3 pics earlier

The beginning of Detroit's downfall was "White Flight". Whites, not willing to live near blacks, fled to the suburbs resulting in empty houses, less tax revenue/investment, and the closure of many businesses. Any city that looses half of its population will have major problems.

It's a shame how many Americans here blame it on black people and how many Europeans here use it to trash a system that works pretty well for over 230 years compared to our young European systems. I think Detroit needs a drastic political change. Until then, maybe plant something that climbs up the worst ruins and covers them up. Germany was in a worse condition after WW2, so I think you can reinvent and rebuild Detroit, America.

the only difference is that germany was destroyed by an external enemy. Detroit was destroyed by those within it's walls. And the German people took pride in where they lived and pulled themselves up. Just not sure the same can be said for the population of Detroit.

The summary comment from your video is absurd. This is not the future of America's cities. It's only the future of cities where the blacks constitute a majority of the populace. There are no white cities in the WORLD that look like this. WWII in Europe brought total destruction to wide swaths of the continent. But the Europeans have rebuilt, that's what they do. If blacks have never participated in the building of the cities they can't possibly fathom how to rebuild or just to keep the city up.

If you take a lot of African Bushmen or Sub-Saharan Africa and you transplant them into a different environment (Detroit) they will eventually diminish their surroundings to that of their original surroundings (jungle). Detroit used to be majority white city, the riots and black immigration into the city caused whites to exit en masse. Blacks in Detroit are incapable of creating or sustaining a higher level civilization, one without violence.

@vantun67 No one thing happened, the real estate crash, the auto market fell, unions got greedy, crooked politicians, white flight, urban decay, and a whole hell of a lot more. It actually looks a fair bit better now, the current civil administration is bulldozing old areas, they're experimenting with urban prairies, and urban farming.
No matter what anyone says about metro Detroit I love it, it's home.

@vantun67 Well, the main problem is that Detroit was built up around the auto industry. Tons of people came to Detroit decades ago for decent paying factory jobs. But those jobs have all gone overseas as our government continues to give out financial rewards to companies who take jobs out of the country. America is fast becoming a very different place to live.

Detroit does in fact have some of the wealthiest suburbs I have ever seen, I can't say anything about the country as a whole, but at least compared to cities like Toronto is has extremely wealthy suburbs, and extremely poor areas too, Detroit is a city of extremes, the lower and upper class are so far apart it's ridiculous, gated neighborhoods, million dollar homes, all ten minutes on 1-75 from something that looks like a bomb went off. In a way it's kind of beautiful, it's home.

Interesting of course. I have seen many of the abandoned Detroit vids. The city probably will recover over several decades a block at a time starting in the center. War torn Europe looked worse and came back. I seriously believe a tourist attraction could be made by fencing off twenty or thirty acres and having guided tours there with the ticket sales being used to rebuild.
