i justed talked to Dick yesterday at the Kansas City expo, really cool guy and very motivational. It really gives this video some depth after talking to him. Oh yeah, and got a PR too!
Can you imagine how much of a bad-ass you would feel like if you were running with thousands of people on either side, hundreds of bikers following you, cops in your shorts, in one of the most presidious races in the world, and you knew that you were in the midst of a complete and total self-sacrafice? I know they were primarily focused on the actual racing of the race, but a deep part of them surely was reveling in the moment.
In 1984, Carlos Lopes beat the best marathoners in the world, including the Kenyans and Ethiopians who flew to Los Angeles in airplanes, in the Olympic marathon. In 1972, Frank Shorter beat all the Africans and all the Europeans and if orange day glo skin colored Martians had flown in on spaceships, Shorter would have kicked their asses to. Skin color and bloodlines have nothing to do with who wins the marathon, in any generation.
I do not think that the motorcycles kepr Dick from beating Alberto, but why did they have to be so close at the very end. I do not see the reason for. I hate messing people when I race. They do not understand that you are in a great pain and struggle all the way up to the finish. They are not runners, that is why they do it. Great race though.
what a race. always heard about this race, that was dramatic to watch. Beardsley did give everything he had, Salazar was just too strong. The motorcycles really were annoying, it almost seemed like they blocked Beardsley on one turn. Why were that many necessary anyways? Didn't they have barriers setup to keep the crowd out?
Damn motorcycles, what the hell? Didn't give him much of an opening, they should be lining the athletes on the left and right, not making it impossible to pass one another.
Well....all i can say I had the honour of being in the same race with these guys, I was passing 21 miles when A. Salazar was crossing the finish line! Would it have been neat to have been able to have been there mixing it up with those two. :)
Salazar had just run 27:29 a week before Ina great race in Eugene against Henry Rono. Never was the same runner again. Over racing has ruined many a career. Needed to drink more water durning race. Then refused to run through misters in L.A. In 1984 Oly. Wasn't the smartest racer just ran with such guts.
I was on my honeymoon during this Boston. I and the little lady watched it on Hereford Street. I actually saw Alberto Salazar turn around and look for Beardsley who was just about 15 yards behind him.
I dont know about that haha Alberto is the one getting carried around while Dick is walking around unassisted. Dick also went for a run the next day and because Alberto didn't drink nearly enough water during the race he had to recieve special treatment after the race. I'm not tryin to be a ass... just providing some background info. which i learned from the book "Duel in the Sun"
I heard Beardsley speak last night to my running group, it was the best talk I have ever heard in my life. To now see this video, only adds to the drama of the story that he shared with us about all the turmoil that was going on in his head during the last 2 miles. Truly amazing.
I think both Dick and Albeto are true gentleman of the sport. That bit at the end when Salazar holds up Beardsley's hand, He's the man! Yea inspirational for someone in recovery. Running needs more people like these two!
Boston's finest screwed up the race. The cops and their motorcycles...my gawd....I ran Boston 1983 (2:14) and apparently cops had learned that they are not in the race. Did see a one.......
Ordinarily, I would agree it is chickenshit to let someone else lead the whole way. However, I read the book, "Duel in the Sun", and Beardsley tried to stay ahead of Salazar's shadow the whole race. Salazar was also having hamstring pain, so he was just hanging on and gutting it out.
It never is like that. Each runner runs his/her own race. Beardsley had always the choice to fold back and save some energy for the end, try to loose Salazar a mile before and countless other strategies. Together, they made the race.
To all: Sorry about the music, but the original audio track in the footage comes with this music. I posted the footage as it is and I do not have the technical skills to get rid of it. Thank you for your comments!
That was so crazy with all the bikers behind, biker cops everywhere, guys running out on the course with cameras, people setting out. that was the world record for running a marathon through a crowd.
Thank you for posting this. I just finished the book today, so getting to see this video clip was very helpful to actually see how it went. Those guys redefined digging deep!
Back then they didn't even put ropes up along the sidewalks. The motorcycles were all they had. A year or 2 after that they figured they needed to change some things.
I've talked to Dick about this race and he was emphatic that the motorcycles didn't effect the outcome. As for how may motorcycles; thats the was it was done back then. No one could have caught them because the press bus was always in the way. Hot day, ran 2:45.
Whether they affected the race or not it was definitely overkill. I counted 7 motorcycles with them on Hereford St. World leaders have less of an escort in a motorcade. I suppose they are there to keep spectators from interfering but may have actually interfered themselves.
Dick Beardsley said that the motorcycles didn't have anything to do with the fact that he came in second. He is really a great guy who is not searching for excuses.
I was there to run. Unfortunately the heat got the better of me. Historically you can never predict the weather for that day. A week before was snow, by race date. HOTT
It's amazing how much better footage is today...haha you can't even recognize the runners here...

Due respect to Salazar, but drafting the leader the entire race, letting him do all the work, then kick at the end- I'd rather be second
