  • this was kind of ruined... for me anyways. it cut off early (for the movie), leaving out the quote to do with resurrection. However, that is how the actual book ends of course, so...

  • ... absolutely fantistic film making... 1937 let you dwell in and feel the emotions... stirring and noble ...

  • When we had to read this book, I'll admit it was hard for me but I cried and ended up loving it, I saw this movie last night and gained a greater respect for it. Wonderful movie!

  • Sydney Carton and the Seamstress.

  • Hey, no one guillotines Ronald Coleman and lives to tell about it!

  • Coleman was the best, his voice, his manner and his looks; a quintessential gentleman and an actor one never forgets, in this one if his most memorable roles

  • what as she gets beheaded

  • the bitch got it

  • One of the movies of my life. One of the 100 movie for see before of die..

  • Heartbreaking. Thanks for posting..

  • That young woman was a poor seamstress who was sentenced to death for being friends with somebody who spoke out against the revolution. The jury members were sitting around drinking alcohol and not even listening to her testimony. It was pathetic.

By the end of that movie, any sympathy you may have had for the peasant revolutionaries was all but gone.

  • A Tale of Two Cities, my favorite book, reminds me of my favorite video game, Resident Evil 5.

Both deal with a foreign hero being harrassed by the insane, pitch-fork wielding psychos.

  • You can't find a braver moment in the movies, some equal but none more. You can't find a greater love either, some equal but none greater. To be granted such an end is something to be wished for.

  • My favorite book and my favorite film.

  • Ronald Coleman along with Erroll Flynn are my all-time favorite actors. This is my all-time favorite movie and my teen and twenty years were in the 1970's and 1980's!!!!!

  • he's SO handsome!

  • This damn movie makes me cry every time I watch it. Ronald Colman is too great an actor and he makes us love him regardless of who he plays. That is true love that Sydney demonstrates. Where are the men like him?

  • I thought Sydney Carton would have been younger

  • That was some good acting by that lady!!I nearly cried...

  • The actress was Isabel Jewell. She also played Emmy Slattery in Gone with the Wind.

  • She was wonderful. This character in literature is one of the saddest I have ever seen and this actress brought her to life at a time when acting on film was rather stilted and false. She was incredible.

  • Right on, bruthas!

Yo! Yo! Yo! I told da teacher to go fuk huhself -- I wasn't readin' no shit book! Dat bitch be suckin' it now! Dam.

I cut mah teacher, an bitch slap huh husband and done pissed on da book!

    Fuk dis, man.

  • Why hello there good sir. From your typing I can tell you are an uneducated African American negro. I just wanted to say, congratulations on learning to use technology and good luck getting around in the world as a poser.

  • Ahahaha that's exactly what I'm talking about.

  • Sir, (or Madame) forgive me but I do not fully understand the meaning or import of that last remark. Could you clarify? Many thanks.

Also, isn't it wonderful baiting a bigot?

    Indeed, yes.

You may retreat into your private world of swastikas and dreams of a "white paradise" And remember to take the "candy" the doctors order for you!!! Good man!

  • Does anyone perhaps have a "solo" or a "video" or whatever that only have Ronald Colman's voice? I need to fully understands the way he pronounce things and so I can imitate his voice for my Humorous Interpretation. Thanks. OH AND THIS ACTING IS SO GOOD. I would have never knew them if it wasn't for my piece.

  • Why do so many here seem to express themelves with obsceniies? Is life really that rough? Just wonderfing...

  • fuck this movie!!!

im reading this book is soo wack and now i have an F kuz of this shit

  • Haha true dat

  • I am a fan of ronald colman.

  • what?

  • I would really like to see a colorized version of this with the new advanced technique.

  • Fans of Colman who are on facebook should check out the movie group "Ronald Colman Appreciation Society"! New members are welcome-- and needed!

  • outstanding

  • Wonderful movie.

  • Yes. The girl's acting blows me away. She is so scared and terrified, and Ronald Coleman can do nothing for her. So sad.

  • i used to watch all these old movies with my grandpa. The result being when guys in the schoolyard were crushing on britney spears and aguilera i had a thing for greer garson and de havilland.

  • t5y665yrty56: You were much smarter and better off than they were, trust me. ;-)

  • Just watched this movie.. I love it. A timeless classic indeed.

  • I hate to post this but I have to say - WOW - Sir Ronald Colman is Hot!

  • When the Book was written The Guillotine was the Machine.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. It's one of the saddest scenes in any movie I've ever seen. Thanks again~~

  • That young woman's acting blows me away. She even upstaged Coleman in that scene. One of the best scenes in cinematic history.

  • well, since we are all gonna die, this is actually a very quick and painless way to go. You don't know what hits you, and the next moment you're in heaven. But, i wonder what they do with all the heads.

  • yes

  • That's Isabel Jewell, one of the great character actresses. Born in Shoshoni, Wyoming.

  • what was the girls job?? does anyone know?? i've been asked to find it out. if you do know please please say.

  • A seamstress I believe

  • nice vid, now i see it is in english

  • is this even english?

    nice vid still though :)

  • Ick, I had nightmares about King Louis being beheaded at the guillotine when we learned about it in history. I love this story, I've only read the book, but the whole idea of execution by guillotine just creeps me out.

I mean, they had to raise the blade TWICE because his neck was so thick. That's a nice picture, I'm sure =P

  • the 1980 tv version with Chris Sarandon was good too.

  • weird seeing this after listening to so many Halls of Ivy episodes. :P

  • movies are so cheesy now.

  • At least he was able to turn his life around and die a happy man. He was able to sacrifice his life for the woman he loved. That is truly courageous.

  • How sad this is. But how they could act, and what a beautiful speaking voice Colman had as well as being gorgeous to look at. They don't make them like this any more!

  • Memorable performances by Mr. Colman and Ms. Jewell. How can you not be moved by the different emotions swirling about? This is what movie making is all about! Today's films rarely reach this quality of cinema. Thank you for sharing.

  • Wow, I never realized that was Isabel Jewel! I thought she looked familiar. Two years later, she'd team up with Coleman again in Frank Capra's amazing "Lost Horizon", playing the dying, embittered prostitute, Gloria. Fantastic actress. Neat.

  • It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...

  • I'm sorry, it's a very good story and a very good film but it fucks me up. Guillotines freak me out. That's a very pretty blonde girl who gets beheaded for no good reason, during the ridiculously grousome Freanch revolution. It freaks me out a bit.

  • It's so gut-wrenchingly sad!!

  • This scene has always brought me faith, comfort and courage.

  • wow. chills. would not like to be there. thanks.

  • INCREDIBLE film.

Thank you SO very much for uploading this clip...

  • Nice to see the vid but the book is better...

  • Thanks for posting,I love Isabel Jewell.i just watched this movie the other night. They don't make em like this anymore.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Take care and God Bless ~~

  • Sir Ronald Coleman was an actor that no one could/can hold a candle to.except my fav. Edward G Robinson

  • I liked the color version as well

  • This is one of the most moving scenes in cinematic history! Owed no less to the great acting of the two main characters involved.

  • Great Part for Isabel Jewell.....wonderful actress......
