Big up FADDA MANLEY...SOCIALIST!!!!. Look at what capitalism has done to middle and the poorer class in this world. One love to Fadda Fidel...gwan du yu ting mi don.
As people, I liked Michael Manley, Hugh Shearer and PJ Patterson...Eddie Seaga was not a "people person", but, from an intellectual and action standpoint, he was a good prime minister...Patterson clearly was the best politician of the lot, because he was the only one of them to win 3 elections back to back...Shearer was the most beloved of all Jamaica's prime ministers and was very good friends with Manley...I think Bustamante had the best hair of the lot and was the most jovial and jocular...
Not everyone felt Manley was good for Jamaica - or felt he cared about ordinary people like Shearer or Seaga.
Anyone over the age of 40 from Jamaica has only to look at what life was like for Jamaicans before and after the early 1970's. Since the PNP and Manley arrived on the scene it has been down hill all the way....
I'm Karen Elizabeth Nethersole, Esq. My grandfather was The Honourable Noel Newton Nethersole, whose statue stands tall in front of the Bank of Jamaica building as he was Minister of Finance in the years 1955 to 1959. A Rhodes scholar and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Jamaica, The Nethersoles worked in government with the Manley family to build Jamaica... Proud that their accomplishments are celebrated.
To be fair the man had lttle to work with. Jamaica is beautiful but its dependance on importation will always be its economy's doom. Jamaica has been a victim of globalization. How England washed its hands of the Jamaican people under the disguise of independence is astonishing.
YUP, Manley was the first leader to see this problem and Identify it and actively try to fix it. The USA hated Manley because he decided to charge them a little tax on sugar and bauxite. This considering that they were charging us so much for Gas, oil and equipment, then turning around and selling us back our own products after they refined it at higher costs.
Its because of this, and because Manley, decided to unite with Castro, that they thought he was going communist and undermined the govt
i dont think jamaica was gona go 2 communism but manley was talking to fidel castro on how jamaica can sustain itself then Edward Seaga Put out Propaganda against Manley
Seaga Was a Puppet which the American C.I.A put there his farther Norman Washington Manley laid out alot of foundations
This guy showed poor leadership. Crime is still high, poor economy, poor healthcare system, poor education system and infrastructure. And people still vote for these guys people should wake up, this is not leadership. They don't have what it takes. I'm sorry they couldn't even get my vote.
I recall Manley back in the late '70s and in the early to mid'80s..talked the leftist/socialist, "get cozy with Castro" talk. However, after political battles with Seaga..more center/right..he later on moved well to the center. At least he talked a better talk..
best prime minister of jamaica. capitalism has got us no where

One of the last influential world leaders to truly care about ordinary people. Jamaica is now full of hustlers who are selling the country out ....

how can u judge his work by today's discrepancies when he isn't in power?

His closeness to socialism destroyed Jamaica. I blame him and Seaga for Jamaica crime rate today; although now it is a world cry.

Well, his status is six feet under (since 1995, I believe)
