  • Instead of learning about Father Charles (he outlawed the minor scale and burned witches). It seems easier to just picture a piano or guitar and think of fifths clockwise and fourths counter-clockwise. Then think of the minor as a sixth of the Key. Then sharp an F for the Key of G and then sharpen every fifth for the next. Same for flats, but in fourths. It also teaches you the guitar neck or piano keys, scales and relations all in one.

  • Thank you Mclovin.... you're a great teacher.

  • wowww

    really niceee

i finally understand how to make circle of fifths

i am proud to have a teacher like youuuu :)

    good luckkk

  • Hey dude, I just want to point out that at 12:58 or so, you were saying "from C to F, that's a 5th" etc and you should have said 4th. the other direction is 5ths...maybe you could add an annotation in there just so you don't confuse people with that. Cheers.

  • One of the best teachers, but this is one of your worst teachings

I seriously recommend redoing this video, mainly because it wasn't very clear

I really like your teaching because it's easygoing but this video needs more explanation

I might sound ungrateful but i'm just asking for help, since others complicate things up

  • I've thanked you in some of your earlier vids. But I feel I can't thank you enough. If i had money, I would donate some straight away! You're videos are amazing. Thank you Andrew.

    Greetings from Norway, Jim :)

  • Maestro andrew~

  • can u teach some jazz rules?please!

  • OMG Lypur you are the wizard of Theory and you make things so clear and easy to understand. You are going to make an accomplished musician out of me! I promise.

  • This was really helpful. :) I'm in choir and we learned to remember it by Fat Cats Go Down Allies Eating Birds, but I really like this term , it just makes more sense.

  • @MeowBroItsKatAndMadi But then you cant go backwords

  • haha, how did i guess that your Canadian

  • very helpful indeed! thank you! just one question, how can an individual have so much charisma?

    ...

  • I made a link to this video from my website. I have a website with free music lessons on it. Rather than trying to explain how to draw the circle of 5ths, I found it much better to link to this video. Thanks so much for this perfect how-to on this subject!

  • Why not use the Dixon chart..It's so much easier

  • Didn't you say that you would be getting back to the piano?

  • 16:29 - is that not F# minor?

  • father charles goes down and ends boner ^m^

  • Every time i have a music final, i come to this guy. Thank you so much for the great lessons! Can't thank you enough for this. Made it so easy to understand this.

    thanks!

  • father Christmas gets drunk and eats babys :P

  • fat cats go down alleys eating bologna!

  • i cant thanku enough your lessons help me so much

  • Bitch Eats Ass Dick Fuck Cunt Good

Good Cunt Fuck Dick Ass Eats Bitch

  • THERE IS A GOD!!! and it's YOU sir. Thank you SO much. I'm going to major in music and I have a weak background in music theory. My teacher doesn't explain it near as well as you do. Now everything clicks!!!!

  • Swag 2 tha maximum, Based Lypur God ◕ ‿‿ ◕

  • Father Charlie Goes Down And Eats Breakfast

  • You are AWESOME!!! Thanks! I am finally getting it!

  • hah hah i knew you were from Canada, same as me, i can tell from your likenesses... or something

  • omg thank you!! :D

  • cool lesson's.

  • Did you ever fucked a girl?

  • music theory is easy when you have a teacher as good as Lypur

    and amphetamines

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING ME WITH THIS!!! MUCH LOVE FROM THE STATE OF ALABAMA!!! :-P

  • F# and Gb isn't the same tone if you play on a violin, its a different intonation, so any type of music will sound slightly different in those two keys. But if you play these two keys on a piano it will sound the same. Just thought I should clear things up.

  • XD i use father charles goes down and ends burned

  • Finally made a youtube account just to subscribe to this and 1 other channel. Now that really says I love you. Thanks for the free lessons, They are great! :-D

  • Thanks so much! I am in my first year of music theory at Capilano U. And you are going to be my tutor! I can't thank you enough, I'll let you know how it goes.

  • LOL Greetings from switzerland! If you ever visit, let me know, I'll show you around... that's the least I could do, you and your lessons are awesome!

  • thank you soo much lypur.

  • What exactly is the purpose of circle of fifths? Isn't it easier to remember that relative minor is 3 semitones below relative major and the key signature one semitone below major? You even covered this in one of the previous lessons. Or am I missing something here?

  • I've seen it before where the bottom of the circle is Gb+ and F#+, which makes sense because then clockwise it's fifths all the way around and counterclockwise it's fourths all the way around. Why did you put Cb+ and C#+ at the bottom?

  • what's up with your hair dude?

  • Nerd is definitely the new cool! Great job, man!

  • "If you're from Switzerland, uh, I think it's actually a pretty cool country."

    bahahahaha

  • @MrJinairik He's obviously never been to Amsterdam.

  • you had music theory classes when you were 8?? I thought this was college stuff..

  • I feel really enlightened all thanks to Andrew! Thank you!

  • Though I may not understand this at all, when I play it I'm like ...whoa! nice! Thanks so much....I'll get it one day! Thankfully I'm not taking a test in this and I just really want to learn more than just chords :)

  • me brain hurts

  • "it's like Switzerland" hahaha

  • Thank you so much, u are kind and thoughtful.

  • Thank you so much dude I have only spent 4 days learning this stuff and am taking it in so easily from your videos :)

  • So I'm just curious, why did you put the Ab minor/A# minor and the Cb Major and C# Major at the bottom. You know more about music than I do, but many of the other charts I've seen don't include them...

  • And I also live in Canada!!!

  • Thank you so much this made everything so much easier.

  • anyway, so

  • Thank you so much for your kind help!

I heard you said you would like to visit Switzland, well, I don't live there, but in Sweden, Stockholm.

    You are very welcome! =)

    Greetings!

    Gaston

  • Hello Andrew Sir. i am alekh from india. Why the name of this video is different from others.....Anyway You are the master of teaching...Thanks

  • Hello Andrew. I'm a bassist from a small town and I am self taught, mostly due to not really having anyone to learn from. Their are no music schools here. I just wanted to thank you for what you're doing. I am literally soaking this stuff up like a sponge. I love it. Again, thanks and keep up the good work.

  • I learnt that if my Lambo has a dodgy dial, I should return it

  • @TheJShone: I could be wrong but I think the outside circle is the total # of sharps or flats in a particular key as you go up or down the wheel..?

  • though im a guitarist..your lessons are really of a big help :D thanks alot!

  • it's very helpful Andrew, thanx!

  • Lypur, your lessons are great, thank you for the free lessons! learnt a lot

  • Hello Andrew and thank you for the lessons , heres my confusion its due to seeing other people explain this wrong on you tube i think ? but it appears that we read this circle across three notes and up and down from starting key note to key note is this correct ?

Example is from D to D up and down and across . using the center needle approach to discover the "total notes or scale" in any give'in key . If so you have been the first to explain this wheel correctly in all the wheel's on YouTube !

  • 16:12 lol," yeah baby let's do this"lol.XD

  • Very useful stuff!

  • This blew my mind with its awesomeness!!!!!

  • Why does every other circle of fifths I can find have F# at the bottom? None of them look like this one.

  • This was really helpful, though I'm learning the circle of fifths but it looks more like a clock circle, but still this has help me figure out the patter by which I could memorize it.

Thank u so much for taking time and making this videos

  • one more thing, is this the same as the guitar circle of fifths? (i'm a guitar player)

  • @Evilnaruto443 This theory applies to all instruments. I play both piano and guitar.

  • does it matter if these letters are capitalized or not? just confused, thanks

  • @Evilnaruto443 I'm wondering the same thing :p. It seems to me that capital = major scale and lower case = minor scale but he's using capital letters for minor scales a few times so I'm not sure :p.

  • @Evilnaruto443 no answer for 1 year? You can take that as a 'no'.

  • The only thing that i can say is THANK YOU so much. These boring rules are so so sweet when you teach. I love you and wish you the best. :)

  • Great video :)

Another great thing to remember is , that the sharps are actually the "leading tones" of the key. For example:

G major has a " f sharp" , which is the leading tone. D major has an f# PLUS C#...which is the leading tone...and so on.

This works for all major keys :)

    Greetings from Germany,

    Paul Noack

  • hey!!! what's up...........you're a good teacher.......I've come up to here in about 3 weeks.....and i have learnt many things........but one thing that i didn't get was...you have two lessons with same number.....for example 13, with the same number you also have lesson on transposition.....

  • @bfspunk101 Made at different times, with different intents. This one is more recent I believe. :)

  • Hey Andrew!

Just to say thanks for this video! Very simple, effective and funny! Will come back for other lessons when needed! :)

  • fat cats go down alleys eating birds :D Good lesson

  • "*sigh* such bad gauges"

Haha. This is fantastic :D Thanks, Andrew!

  • you look like a young rev from avenged sevenfold

  • Your videos are really helping me understand music theory- Thanks so much! Um, but why do you wear your hair like a mad scientist?

  • Hi Lypur !!! I just wanna say thank you for taking your time to record those videos which i consider are a TRemenDOUS help for me. I recently came to the US... ( 1 year and 10 months ago) from SouthAmerica... You cant understand how difficult is to learn music in other language. Now, Of course, I understand more English, but the way you explain theory its just so clear even for a foreign student. Thanks Lypur !! God bless you. U need to get a Degree on Education.... for real !

  • This was helpful, thanks. Even got to refresh my color knowledge and not sure what the dodge viper dissertation was about but, yeah...thanks. Very helpful.

  • Can you help or is it YouTube? "An error occurred, please try again later."

    Thanks! You're just great!

  • First try for me was 1minute and 39seconds ... dang you, miracle people Dx.

  • under a min on first try! :)

  • Just if I could draw circles. I could do this really really fast!!!

    Grr, I hate circles

  • new personal record - 49 sec :)))))))

  • why is this not titled "#13 LEARN FREE MUSIC THEORY"?

  • I wish I could have had a teacher like you 50 plus years ago. Excellent, thank you so much. I hope you have nothing but good fortune and that all your dreams come true. So many things I forgot and so many I didn't understand back then. You truly have a talent for teaching.

  • Thank you very much! You have saved me a ton of money and time. I have learned so much. I truly believe that I will be able to write music to go with my original lyrics soon, due your lessons. Thanks again. God bless! Janell

  • I wonder in how many seconds Justin Bieber would draw this. Probably really fast since he's so good, heh?

  • 2:28 - oops forgot the clitoris.

  • This is perfect though I don't understand it quite yet I've downloaded the first 15 of this series and know a little bit about this!

  • boobies XD

  • I remember circle of fifths by "Father Calls George Down And Eats Breakfast".

  • Hi Lypur...I'm proud to say that i'm student of Mr.ANDREW ...I was searching for a perfect teacher to teach piano online......The day when i found your video, i felt like i'm blessed by GOD to find you.....I'm not only learning the piano but also the moral values in life tat u give in between classes......I can see the feel of satisfaction & happiness in your face while teaching others....HATS OFF!!! Words are not enough to praise your service......Please continue for you sincere students

  • @rajtoall Thanks so much for your kind words. :) I wish you the best!

  • @rajtoall God Doesn't exist LYPUR DOES therefore you been blessed by Lypurs Wisdome and skills.. stop stealing his credits you christians!!!

  • subscribing for sure such a cute way to learn

  • @77nova454 cute?

  • nicely explained, but you need to use markers that are thicker and maybe draw a larger circle and try to make the colours like green and brown more visiblle. Each time you do improve, but you need more practice writing it down on the board. You are very funny and entertaining though, thanks for these important videos

  • your so adorable!!! I have my A level exam TOMORROW! and this has helped so much!! I havn't looked at this for 2 years! Thanks so much :) def. going to help me :)

  • I prefer another key signature calculation method much much more!

You can find an explanation of it on 8notes side (it's not a spam!),

then go to "music theory" and "lesson 16".

The moethod given by 8notes is better in my opinion because you don't have to draw anything and it's actually quite easy to learn.

  • i find it ironic that it takes 7 steps to create a circle of 5th's ud think it would only take 5 steps to create a circle of 5th's

  • You are brilliant, I've never EVER learnt so much from one person, you're almost god status.. seriously. So much respect. Thank you, thank you, thank youuuuuuuuu!!

  • so do G# major, D# major, A#major, E#major, B#major & Fb major have no key signature?

  • @scrollandkey Enharmonic tones I think - G# would be Ab (4 flats), D# would be Eb (3 flats), A# would be Bb (2 flats), E# would be F (1 flat), B# would be C (no accidentals), and Fb would be E (4 sharps).

  • Legend.

  • Thanks Andrew been following the lessons until lesson #9 on the other set of videos you made. i couldn't get my head around the cricle of fifths. I looked at other youtube videos on the subject but still couldn't figure it out.

This video is 10/10 the different coloured pens helped me lots thanks. The way you explained the circle of fifths was really simple and straight forward :)

Recently took up the keyboard and your videos are A+. just wanted to say thanks for all your help.

  • canada!? :[ i was going to drive to you for lessons

  • Great Episode and lesson. I always had trouble remembering the circle of fifths, not anymore!

  • 2:35

    lol you said boobies

  • uhh, lol no. I was talking about the floating markers in water.

  • @Lypur

haha ooh i just wanted to hear that :(

  • @Lypur wayer buoy

  • @Lypur i found a way to simplify the circle of fifths

takes about 10 seconds to draw

  • @Lypur bueys....

  • @Lypur You mean "buoys".

  • @JimJimJimNL lol

  • Please accept my Video Response :D

I did this in only 54 ((Underline)) SECONDS!!! <3

  • :D Nice job man! I saw the video ^_^ You defintely got an A+ on your homework man :D

  • that was homework? Nice :)

  • Thanks, Andrew! Great presentation. But WHY does this work. Is it just a natural consequence of Western music which has Tonic-Dominant relationships

  • lol at first i thought it said circal of filth and i was like what? thats not right its a piano thing and i was like :D

  • Haha! Was just learning that in Rudiments! I suck in Rudiments, by the way. I get owned by a kid younger than me in it, Haha!

  • circle of fifths look so easy...and its fun to draw..

and i get what the circle of fifths mean :)

  • I missed the 5, and rated your vid a 4 :(

  • It's ok, I rated it a 5 to help make up for it ;)

  • Our teacher lets us yell the circle at 200 bpm :)

  • when i did the piano lessons i dint't understand the circle very well.. but after the 12 lessons of the music theory i understanded it percectly !

  • sooooooooo.... melodic minors.. they are the minors that you normally hear..

  • Actually, i'd say it's a split between harmonic and melodic. Harmonic might even be slightly more used.

  • @Lypur

oh and.. does F minor have a melodic and harmonic minor? it seems kinda weird..

  • guess all notes have natural, melodic and harmonic minor just follow the pattern. (=

  • Great video! :)

  • 14:25 That was VERY off topic -.- lol

  • @SarioTriforce not that off.

  • @SarioTriforce He's very proud of his colored markers :)

  • Isn't it the circle of fourths when you're going counter-clockwise? Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Nice lesson, Andrew!

  • Hey there,

Well, if you start on C and go down to F that's a perfect 5th

  • Ah, yes, sorry, I looked at it as F being above C which then would be a 4th.

    Thanks for the clarification.

  • you are my piano and music teacher but i think you r musical angel too for me, andrew

  • Thank you again my brother and teacher.

Let me tell you that when somebody ask me who is my music teacher i always say that I have a Canadian one named Andrew Furmanczyk.

So you are officially my music teacher

I promise not to be a superficial student, please if you need something ask me, remember that I´m at your service.

  • ^_^ aww! What do people usually say when you tell them that?

  • yesssssssssss

  • Now I've learned how to draw and use the circle.

    Thanks for the lesson :)

  • welcome!

  • You seem to be the king of tangents,

which is a compliment from me.

  • Lol's, 2AM over here,

    I must learn this!

    Thanks andrew,

the circle of fiths always challenged me up untill now.

  • seconds lol im happy learning

  • first
