I couldn't imagine Joshua Chamberlain, Robert E. Lee, or Ulysses Grant becoming motivational speakers for white-collar yuppie assholes after their military careers ended.
I was on the drop zone when he jumped Sep 11, 2001 as part of the Airborne and Special Operations Test Directorate - he jumped with the XVIII Airborne Corps commmander - we took pictures and he jumpied with our unit. We called the the plane prior to the jump to inform them what had just happened and the CG decided to jump. We got pictures of most eveyone as they jumping, and my boss later had one picture of the CG blown up and he signed it with gold pen so he would know where he was on 9-11.
a lot of haters on here. this man can make decisions when most of us would be shitting bricks. years of training and facing danger. whatever side of the political fence you sit on you have got to accept that he has learnt things that most people never will. imo that is worth listening to.
@pastorrichwitmer Blindly defending anyone with tired cliches is going to be ineffectual in swaying me. I stand by my comment. Leadership skills are leadership skills whether held by angels or demons, was my point. Using a piece of propaganda like 'freedom isn't free' to justify shitty behavior or choices isn't impressive at all. Unless one wants to highlight their hypocrisy.
How strange! My experience in the Air Force as an F-16 pilot convinced me that far and away the finest, most selfless, responsible, and courageous individuals were found in the military.
I find it ironic that you sign off with "Peace". How is it maintained? By Diplomacy? Who would have stopped Hitler's atrocities and Japan's imperialistic ambitions? The Peace Corps? Demonstrators in Washington Square?
How bright do you think the future would have been for humanity had Hitler
Good speech, but the the question:*Where were you in 9.11.?* cannot be very effective motivationwise since most of the people think with their own brains and they know that Afganistan (and Iraq) had very little to do with the tragedy in NYC.
They should have hunted down the people involved in training and funding these men, NOT try to democratize these countries. Removing Saddam should have been the only target in Iraq.
Ladies and gentlemen. For those of you that chose to leave some nasty comments, undertand this: the difference between the world you currently live in and a Hobbesian "state of nature" is the protection that men like General McChrystal provide. NO country is able to ensure their citizens' dignity and freedom without the mechanisms to stop outside forces that threaten those values.
How to train out compassion and replace it with heartlessness. The art of war. Evil becoming noble and justified. Hatred and killing pretending to be love and patriotism. Heartlessness breeds heartlessness so the world goes. Epic scale mass murder becomes " The Greatest Generation" Go figure? BUT THEY INSURE WE ARE FREE ! ! Ok. WHAT ABOUT HITLER AND 911 ? ? Ok. Funny in America when we turn another cheek we turn it into hamburger.
...all others and anything else? Why, when even a good portion of the nation he claims to represent is against the wars he is 'managing', would TED invite a speaker focused on catching up to tech and standard business practices, when his professional choices have resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives both civilian and military? Poor judgement to the point of being the antithesis of TED. Boo.
@rjhasflow ... all others and anything else? Why, when even a good portion of the nation he claims to represent is against the wars he is 'managing', would TED invite a speaker focused on catching up to tech and standard business practices, when his professional choices have resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives both civilian and military? Poor judgement to the point of being the antithesis of TED. Boo.
@rjhasflow To begin, anyone in a leadership position ( handling off site employees ) for the last decade could have given this talk. He presented nothing new; Nothing of real value. More importantly, TED is a multi cultural, multi national, ethnically diverse group of ppl who come together to share new and innovative ideas, without the harness of national politics and in a peaceful venue. Why on earth would you invite someone who's professional choice is to represent one national ideal above al
@bwmcmaste I watched the whole thging. It is just more war mongering IMNO. Stanlying is a liar. He has shown us that he has no integrity and no honor.
Stanlying McCrystal is a big fat LIAR. He should have been before a court martial, but that would have been the correct thing to happen and generals can scoff at the US military code of justice. Stalying lied - knew it was a lie and lied and continues to lie. He is a failure by his own words of his TED presentation. Fuck him. He is OK with sending more young men to their deaths. His TED speak is just more propaganda. He is as low as a snake's belly in a wagon wheel rut.
I'm disappointed. Not in the talk. Not in the speaker, but in TED. Bin Laden had leadership skills too. Don't think he should have been invited to speak at TED either. Just inappropriate for the venue, international audience etc. Astonishing lack of judgement, TED.
@098anne Anyone who compares Gen. McChrystal to Bin Laden is a fool. Freedom isn't free. From the U.S. to the world: You're welcome (whether you asked for it or not).
that talk kinda sucked. it's propoganda, really. ":( wah, look at us, we're the united states troops we have it so hard". fuck that shit. i have no respect for men who pick up weapons of death and march to murder the innocent.
Obviously to all people who have managed to develop some critical thought, real values, and see behind all the army/war/terrorist etc propaganda, this guy is a murderer, one of many. Even if he was(is?) just a pawn in the army, he could NOT BE in that position, it was his choice to be a murderer. Then again everyone should get a chance to tell their opinion on a subject, but this was one of the worst ted talks i've seen, the "talk" had no flow, and the subject was just boring. Peace out. :)
@dexter21380 I suggest you grow up. The world isn't a perfect place but people like McCrystal sacrifice a lot - more than you or I ever will - to ensure we are free. Of course we all want a world without war, but it takes a singular lack of historical, or indeed any, perspective to think that is realistic. You need to thank your lucky stars people are out there to protect you and give them the respect of listening. You never know, you might learn something.
@charlie17053 Yeah, i might learn what i've allready learned from my 1 1/2 years of mandatory service in the Greek Army, NOT. :D The world is what YOU make it to be, and would be better without this braindead people. (...) Also, the USA creates the wars, despite the poor propaganda it isn't a country that has a defensive stance, it's the imperialist, war inducing nation of our times. So, you grow up, learn what's really happening around you. Lives are important, even if they are "muslim lives".
The inability to find anything thought provoking, fascinating, or inspiring in his comments suggest a narrow mind. Leadership is difficult in the best circumstances; leadership, especially effective leadership, in a highly stressful environment where live's depend on it is unimaginably difficult. Your comments make it obvious you cannot relate. Anyone having leadership experience cannot help but find his comments at the least, thought provoking, at best, inspiring.
Dear Everyone-Leaving-Nasty-Comments, the only reason you have the ability to express your opinion is because of the soldiers who fought, and are still fighting, for our freedom. Sincerely, A proud supporter of our troops <3
It is through the dedication and sacrifices of selfless people like him that enable Americans to live, work, recreate, procreate and sleep in peace and safety. They fully deserve our profound gratitude and respect. The least we could do to show our appreciation is to say thank you and shake their hands when we meet them.
What a bullshit talk. It would have been nice if this guy could acknowledge that he and his soldiers were wrong to invade those countries. SILENCE IS BETRAYAL.
If you're closed minded enough that you can't bear the idea that someone from a military background has legitimate relevance to the TED message, forget about who he is and where he's from and just watch from 14:31...
Great TED Talk! His discussion on leadership was enlightening regardless of your chosen profession. Too many corporate leaders don't understand the importance of leadership and self-sacrifice for the greater good of the ENTIRE organization. It is clear that McChrystal gets it. I felt as though this was one of the better TED Talks I have seen.
My service in the Army convinced me that the military is an idiots paradise. And I still hold that view even if the military is a necessary evil in a dangerous world. This was not the worst TED talk ever. But I see no reason to have a man who's basic job description was, kill people and brake things, speaking in a forum that is supposed to be about enlightenment and building a brighter future. Peace.
Yeah...but what about the thousands of mutilated, dead men, women and children? Tell me about them.... you evil specimen of the human race. In the big picture, you are a cancer cell.
@kulls13 The answer is not to attack or destroy the military, is to let it become useless. People can solve his problems with dialogue and understanding the others, and with proper education we can make people respect eachother.
@ilotitto You are a naive and idealistic fool. YouTube doesn't give me enough characters to fully explain why what you posted is completely asinine T.T
The Military will always be around because War will always be around. Unless of course you can unite every human being under a single banner. FYI the closest the world has ever came to world peace is at the height of the British Empire around the 1920s when it controlled a fourth of the world's population. If you can do better, then by all means.
The reason why I watched this was to find out more about McChrystal's personal thoughts and values after holding important appointments in the military. For most of us, if we were put in his position, facing the pressures from all fronts: society, the government and even your own troops, it would definitely change the way you think and work. Kudos to McChrystal
RosenKrantz666 - Someday when you have the privilege of meeting this great man, you can personally thank him for his service to all of us so you could have the freedom to publicly display your ignorance without fear of reprisals that in too many countries around the world would cost you your life. The reason you're not reading this in Japanese, German, Korean or Vietnamese is because of the many military men and women gave up their lives so you wouldn't have to.
@LearnFromTheGiants THAT naive propaganda u just REPEATED is precisely what keeps sheeple in line. "his service" ain't done sh*t 2safeguard my FREEDOMS. His ass is working 4himself & corporatists & their sycophantic turds whom have hijacked Am.Republic. We haven't had a Cong.Declaration of War since 1941. Military's SOLE OATH is to Protect & Defend the Constitution. What he's done is akin to raping,'to prevent rape.' U have HIGHER % of being hit by lightning than be victim of terrorism. Grow up.
@LearnFromTheGiants Militarymen R NOT grown in some lab where no other human beings R incapable of learning how2do what they do. In fact,WHOLE pt. of Mil. is2train lowest common denominator of a given populace 2do State's bidding. Ur profession doesn't dictate ur worth as a man,it's how u nurtured urself as an individual & how u ACT that matter. Can U honestly tell me u'd be fine telling UR OWN kids that u're some1 that pulled some1's else's fingernails at UR work? Stop kissing Statists' ass.
Listen, I don't particularly like this guy but the talk was good. The content was good. It wasn't some feminism BS but a real talk that obviously was given lots of preparation. People want to politicize TED talks, gtfo please.
PEOPLE want to politicize TED? its TED that is giving this criminal punk political figure airtime, you dumb sack of shit. its like giving reagan, bush, charles manson, rumsfeld, cheney, al capone or hitler airtime.
you must be one of those pipdick weakling woman-fearing and hating dumb sacks of shit that always thumbs down and whines like a wimp every time a woman appears on TED, you weak pindick dumb sack of shit.
@alovelytime You are a war criminal. Your BS economic fallacies and BS logic have starved millions to death in the world. Do me a favor and SHUT THE FUCK UP. I'm sick and tired of listening to dumb fucks like your self talk out their ass about stuff they don't fucking understand because their to busy living in magical fairy unicorn land sucking each others dicks. And BTW I don't give a fuck if your a homo so don't spout of that I'm a homophobe in your reply.
lovely, compare reagan and bush against hitler. i suppose you're just a fagget obama sympathizer looking to pick a fucking fight anytime someone else disagrees.
Did McCrystal talk about the benefits of torture? nope.
Did he spew out any republican agenda? nope.
Did he say ANYTHING that is AT ALL goddamn political? nope.
BTW just read around and found out your a fag. GREAT JOB ON CONVINCING ME ALL FAGGETS DESERVE TO BE SHOT. AWESOME. NOW I GET TO SPREAD HOMOPHOBIA TO ALL MY FRIENDS
@bwmcmaste Oh no, had to be a fellow Misesian.o( Hm, here I thought Goebbels & Himmler were chilaxin' cruisin around South Beach. Sure, I'll listen to his ass, when he's brought up on Nuremberg 2.0 charges & gives his BS rationale as to why he thought 'just following orders' to set up torture policies in AfPak for JSOC/SOCOM was Constitutional. Unless you weren't aware, there can be no Statist crime more insidious than torture. I rather not drink a tall glass of historical amnesia on the rocks.
"its probably more important than marriage vows"......yeah thats right, war is so more important and beneficial to humanity than love. can someone please explain to me the hidden initials of Murderous-Neanderthal , in the word TED?
I think the saddest part of this story is that he is a military man and therefore he is a lost cause. What a waste, he has done quite nicely wasting his life.
To me, military leadership is kind of an oxymoron. They seem to be expert followers. They're trained to take orders and carry them out at the ultimate cost. Even at the highest achievable rank in the military, you'll still be following someone's else commands.
I won't argue- it's a great institution, but it doesn't go far enough. I wish it were into problem solving and building interdependent relationships that build bridges, rather than burning them down.
I dream of a world without soldiers “the sinews of war are not gold, but good soldiers" (Niccolo Machiavelli). Good talk about leadership, but do we need sheeps and leaders? do we need a chain of command? In a transparent world, decisions are not a matter of rhetoric, facts speak louder then the opinion of the guys on top. Oh i dream of a world without elite, where decisions are arrived at by scientific consensus based on solid falsifiable studies, without the powerful few and the sheep.
@Ultra4 I doubt that human beings, at least in their current evolutionary state, are capable of moving on into an ideal world. There's always somebody who wants power.
@Ultra4 I would rather have decisions made by conscious individuals who have intelligence and feelings and values, than decisions arrived at by scientific consensus. Scientific consensus can't take responsibility. We may debate which individuals, with which values, we put in positions of power. However, I do not believe that blind decisions can be wise decisions.
@595o Certainly NOT my subjective feelings, nor yours. I believe that all feelings are subjective. It would be his, the leader's, subjective feelings. Feelings allow the possibility of empathy, compassion, mercy, thought, judgement, and consideration: not ENSURE these things, but not entirely PRECLUDE them. Yes, the leader's values as well, allowing decisions to be considered, rather than arbitrary and heartless. But we should be able to select leaders whose values align with our own.
That was the least amount of applause I've ever seen from a TED audience. His brainwashing techniques don't work so well when you aren't forced to believe everything out of his mouth because of the chain of command.
stanley mcchrystal, stand at attention when joe public speaks to you, boy.
you are not only a dumb sack of shit, but you are lying punk criminal that should at least be slapped up and down the street, naked, by the surviving family members of those you have murdered.
you are, and always have been a complete waste and failure of my money.
you dumb sacks of shit. following orders is no excuse for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and in the case of stanley mcchrystal, being a lying scumbag as well.
im talking about you, and ur idiot dumb sack of shit comment about talking to political leaders, as if troops themselves dont make a conscious decision to follow criminal orders, you dumb sack of shit.
following orders is no excuse, and neither is being a dumb sack of shit.
@alovelytime I'm sure I could have learned many good lessons from Hitler, despite everything he did. Even criminals gain life experiences and wisdom. I agree orders should be disobeyed without hesitation when they deserve disobedience. Anyway, what I agree with most is that the onus is on US, ourselves. I can't stand people who blame the government for things.. they should be blaming themselves and their fellow citizens for putting it into place and/or allowing it to remain there.
to be clear, i think everyone should be heard, regardless. i just have a problem with certain suspect political voices being presented out of context of their suspect politics. politics is personal.
@AcidRain64 would you expect a 'dumb' person to make all the right desicions? in my opinion it's not the people who are to blame, it's the system that doesn't cope with an uninformed voter. democracy has a long way to go and with current media and manipulation tactics political groups use, democracy has lost a lot of meaning. we need some real leaders to clean the shit from the walls
@stijnhaki Of course not; nonetheless, that is the root of the problem. Certainly agree that great leaders would be one means to solving that problem. But from that perspective, a damn good case could be made against democracy and for a smaller elite making the big decisions. I just can't stand when the "dumb" people complain about the circumstances they're complicit in creating or allowing. Fair example, I think, might be bailouts. Wine about 'em, but not willing to deal with the alternative.
For the record, I don't support bailouts, either.. but I stand by that, and would absolutely be willing to endure a short-term (perhaps even lasting a decade!) hardship if it meant ending up with MUCH better circumstances afterward. We're all in it together. People complain about things but few are willing to take the hits required to change them. It's very frustrating. Talk is cheap. That's all. :-)
He is talking about building cohesion within an organization and how the ability to do so correlates with effective leadership and high quality performance in any group of individuals with a common purpose.
He is talking entirely in practical terms, because he respects another's God given right to make ethical choices for themselves. Don't bash on this man just because you have no genuine concept of individuality and need to be told by someone else what is right and wrong.
shut up you dumb sack of shit. being a leader of a criminal organization that loots our tax dollars to bomb, invade and occupy innocent civilians is not a service to our country.
@alovelytime ..........my comments were not directed at you. But your comments show a lack of respect for a person with integrity and honor. He follows detailed orders.........that is his job. Perhaps read a bit more on how the military functions or travel and see what the real world is like. Never been out of the US ?
if you come to joe public's, house then ur talking to joe public, you dumb sack of shit.
my comments show a lack of respect? thats right. i have no respect for the US military. they deserve no respect. they deserve to be shamed and jailed.
never trust a man in military uniform or in dockers and polo shirts. watch TED's, Mick Ebeling: The invention that unlocked a locked-in artist, if you want to see a real hardworking, self-sacrificing person worthy of honor. FUCK ALL TROOPS
@alovelytime .........you are right I am talking to joe public. Let me speak more to your level. Try a few F words (more threatening than s word) and statements that have no basis in reality.....maybe some more all caps.
Please contact the authorities immediately,......they will be intrigued with your command of the "facts" and the English language, impressive stuff. Stay in school.
shut up dummy, and fuck off. help create a society that doesnt include a standing military gang of mercenary criminals that loot over half of our yearly discretionary tax money to bomb, invade, murder and occupy innocent civilians, you dumb sack of shit.
@alovelytime ...Ouch ! You really have me on the ropes now. You must be a student of History and English. What successful societies have there been with no military ? None. Human nature dictates that you have the ability to defend yourself. Walk softly and carry a big stick. You would have everything you need in your society (rainbows & butterflies) except when others want what you have. Your proposal is not based in reality. Try again with more F words, lame insults & unworkable plans
@alovelytime ................This is a great idea. We could greet all the new members of the society with the greeting of " Shut up dummy & fuck off"..............give them rainbows and butterflies (your fantasy world with no mean people) and then keep them down with a few " dumb sack of shits" You may be right .............it is kind of wonderful living in Land of Oz.
@dwinnell The military is an example of leadership under the most impossible of situations. If CEOs can learn from this guy then maybe massive companies won't go bankrupt.
@Nardypants the whole video is a punch... i recommend you watch it again... listen and learn... this man is a great leader, he has great insight into how to lead... are you a leader? do you see these in yourself? or are you one of the people that leaders work to keep safe? i will sacrifice everything to keep my country safe, will you?
@pyro5050 Well, the thing is, this is really just basic leadership skills. You don't need to go to the military for that, you can get that kind of experience from NOLS or things like that. There was nothing innovative or groundbreaking about what he said. That's why I consider it pretty boring.
Regarding the negative comments being posted, I'm not sure that it's realistic to expect an effective military leader to also be a warm and fuzzy humanitarian. Good leaders are able to get others to buy into a common cause and to give others a sense of purpose, which is what this twit's talk was about. I don't expect any military leader to have an untarnished soul, but I have to admit that I have higher expectations of their personal integrity than what this guy delivered.
I thoroughly enjoy reading and laughing at all the comment wars. You all do know you are wasting time and energy, right? Go spend that time and energy on making the world a better, and more positive place. Please.
Very good man - he has had a lot of weight on his shoulders holding his country up - these people need support - i remember 9/11 i was having a holiday with the only girlfriend i will ever have.
Hey TED, why not invite Heinrich Himmler to speak? Or Goebbels? You invite thinkers, engineers, artists, but now, a WarCriminal to lecture on "leadership"?? McKristolNACHT is responsible for setting up AbuGhraib-in-Afghanistan, aka BagramAirbase where Wall St.Bankster-HIJACKED US-Gvt is using OUR Military as its PRIVATE ARMY to TORTURE! What's wrong w/this picture? Why not invite him to talk on limits of sleepdeprivation,nail-pulling,waterboarding,shocktherapy? Heard that=path to enlightenment!
@RosenKrantz666 Why not invite other war criminals to speak? If this shows anything, it's that people aren't one-dimensional. I'm sure they would have very interesting things to say.
@Loalrikowki Agree & get ur sentiments wanting2understand nature of his type of psychosis. But,I'd ONLY PAY 2see a WarCriminal yap,WHEN & IF he's served time/repented,or @least grown 2B genuinely remorseful. But,since I'm not THAT enlightened,I'd GLADLY grab a bag full of popcorn 2watch Nuremberg2.0 to see the publicly-DOCUMENTED GWB/oBOMBa's BagramAirbase torture center designer get his proper DUE PROCESS. Sure, no1's 1-dimensional, not even Charles Manson, but voluntarily hearing them yap@TED??
@BaileysBeads Good for you! Now u know how2search Wikipedia! u honestly think ur moronic 'DIM TWAT'verbal diarrhea would mpact me, or change the fact that McChystalNACHT designed policies for BagramAirbase torture center, genius? Plus, kiddie, IF ur idea of a witty 1-liner is what a kindergarten dolt would blabber, u know you're just making excuses for being a precocious imbecile, all at the ripe age of 78. IF u actually had any intelligence, take a hint,go stand in the corner;adults are talking.
@edstamos LOL. I suppose you're deluding your ability to type to mean that you're intelligent enough to decipher info packed with words, references, and publicly documented history crammed into a 500 word limit sandbox. I'm not judging... but your YouTube page doesn't exactly exhibit your dim lightbulb, either. Actually it does. LOL. Now you too can stand in the corner, adults aren't talking to you, either.
Thanks for fulfilling my daily net-idiot bemusement quota for the day.
@RosenKrantz666 What part of DEAD didn't you understand? They're DEAD. You can't invite DEAD people to a TEDtalk no matter how interesting their talks, you want to know why? BECAUSE THEY'RE DEAD.
@BaileysBeads Hesus Cristos, are you that DAFT? The point was a correlation in inviting a WarCriminal to speak on "leadership, ya historically amnesic invalid. No shit those Nazis are dead, genius! Oh wait, if you were a 'genius' you wouldn't be making asininely repetitive non-comment not worth conversing over. Come back when you've gained a few neurons. Oh wait, that rarely happens. Never mind. Go stand in the corner, adults are still talking.
@RosenKrantz666 Why don't you shut the fuck up and stand up for something. Why don't you actually read up on reality instead of making up bull shit? Oh never mind you are not one that likes to think. You are one who lives in the magical fairy unicorn land where bull shit is spread around as truth and people defending their lives is evil.
@thebestsumoeva LOL. Wah,wah,u CryBaby biach. Being aware of a WarCriminal=belief in unicorn? Funny, don't see McChystal climaxing w/all ur DkSucking. It's okay to have hobbies, but u're outing urself w/'My Little Ponies' infatuation. I too can type "Why don't you shut the fuck up and stand up for something?" But, guess what, NO NEED to tell u2 STFU because as most comments on this upload exhibits, MOST ppl know who McChrystal really is. ONLY ones who don't ARE the ones who believe in 'Unicorns.'
@RosenKrantz666 No, believing a man is a war criminal for doing his job is believing in unicorns. I'm sad to admit it, but after reading some of the comments on this page I've come to realize there are a lot of dumb fucks like your self posting nonsense. The good news is there still are people out there that understand how the world works and fortunately for both us we don't have to worry tonight because they exist.
@freedominstinct Hm, let's see how 'uninformed, nonsensical' those comments really are: PUBLICLY DOCUMENTED FACT: 1.McChrystal set up/designed torture policies 2B implemented @ Bagram Airbase, aka."AbuGhraib" of Afghanistan 2.THAT makes him a WarCriminal by Fed.& Int'l laws in which USGvt is signatory to, mainly Geneva Conventions 3.Wall St. finances ALL Mil.Ind.contractors as they're publicly traded companies, in which 'our foreign policy' is designed around. Tough living in denial, ain't it?
@RosenKrantz666 1. He did setup and design legal torture policies, note the word LEGAL. 2. He is not a war criminal for following orders from superiors, this was an authorized use of force from the government and all legal requirements were met. Once again something you'd like to be true just is not. 3. Wall street does not finance war, the tax payers do which wall street is a part of technically, but a majority of the funding comes from tax payers. I'd say something sarcastic, but no need.
@thebestsumoeva 1.Torture is STILL ILLEGAL,under BOTH Fed.AND StateLaws. U're deluding their excuse w/ACTUAL law 2.Obviously ur idea of 'history' is what happened 2hrs ago; google Nuremberg: US HUNG WarCriminals whose excuse was "Just Following Orders," capice? 3.FACT that u're clueless of HOW WallSt.actually "funds wars," tells me u're clueless of how $Fiat-Banking works. That delusion alone outs u as a brainwashed infant. I know kiddo, world can be scary if U actually had 2think 4urself 4once.
@RosenKrantz666 1. You do understand when they say torture they are talking about water boarding or solitary confinement. Water boarding is legal and so is solitary, we do it on our own military members for training. 2. Once again everything he did was authorized and legal, you don't think a General has access to the JAG for legal advice? 3. Wall street is not the federal reserve, it's an investment tool, if you need to separate these entities before we can continue.
@thebestsumoeva If water boarding is legal and not considered torture, then why in did the U.S. charge a Japanese officer, Yukio Asana with waterboarding an American during WWII with a war crime charge? He was sentenced 15 years btw.
@chat099 ...........Well that was one of many charges against him...........The full charges included beating using hands, fists, club; kicking, burning using cigarettes; strapping of a prisoner on a stretcher with the prisoner's head on a decline for extended periods. This was a real bad guy.
@thebestsumoeva 1.SERE is USUALLY reserved ONLY for PILOTS & SPECOPS, NO 1 in basic gets it 2.WtrBd,cutting knees2letBleed=ALL ILLEGAL TORTURE;have ur mommy do it 2U then tell us, u PUSSY. NOT 1 comment u make is ur own,it's PURE Gvt.PROPGANDA 2.google NUREMBERG: "JUST FOLLOWING ORDERS" is PRECISELY the REASON why Nazis were HUNG 3.JAG is there 2cover Military's ASS 4.FACT u DON'T know that Fed.Res.Gov.Board is selected by Wall St.Banks tell me everything u 'know' which is NOTHING. GrowUP drone!
@RosenKrantz666 1. So because we don't torture all it is bad? 2. I don't think cutting knees is legal, just water boarding. 3. Did you read when I said legal? 4. You have some understanding of the fed, but I feel you completely lack how to exactly fix the problems at hand. You simply can not ban the federal reserve in today's economy, you must phase it out and have fundamental monetary reform that I could expand on if you'd like...
@thebestsumoeva Hesus Cristos kid, LEARN2STOP embarrassing urself; take a hint when some1 is being patient w/ u. Find me ANY Fed/State Law/code/statutes that ENUMERATES Waterboarding as "legal." U CAN'T. Know why? 'Cause for the umteenth time, it's ILLEGAL, capice? It SPECIFICALLY VIOLATES NO "cruel and unusual punishments" Clause of the 8th Amd.of OUR OWN CONSTITUTION, ya Tory! U're deluding GWB/CheneyWarCriminals' oft TV-repeated CYA-BS.RATIONALE as a lawful defense! Nuremberg 2.0, ya Bitches!
@RosenKrantz666 Fine I give up, your use of caps lock has defeated me. Now please relax and stop calling the president a war criminal. Perhaps we could have a beer sometime and talk about normal things like life.
@RosenKrantz666 I'm really sorry I cannot understand what you're saying. Please take a course in basic English, because it horrendous and not readable.
4-Star generals DON'T 'accidentally' invite a RollingStoneMag reporter, nor slip things he shouldn't, PERIOD. Interview WAS his personal exit strategy; douchebag KNEW Afghanistan like all mil.& political dopes B4 him for 2000yrs+ has ALWAYS been & WILL BE the'Graveyard of Empires.' For crying out loud, Sun Tzu's Art of War is REQUIRED reading for ALL officers at W.Point,ArmyWarCollege,Def.Lang.School. AfPak violates EVERY lesson in it! But, he'll have his Nuremberg & pay for instituting torture.
I don't know if I believe him when he said leading by consents.... After all he was the one who attempted to push his Afghanistan policy not by trying to convince the leads of this country but by talking to the media and giving speeches that almost bordered insubordination.
The Strongest Military in the world is nothing when you have a critically flawed Foreign Policy....
..Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the man who conceived and directed the Sept.11 terrorist attacks, was motivated by his strong disagreement with U.S. Foreign Policy favoring Israel... 9/11 Commission Report, p147

How bright do you think the future would have been for humanity had Hitler
triumphed?

John7714 9 months ago
Stanlying McCrystal is a big fat LIAR. He should have been before a court martial, but that would have been the correct thing to happen and generals can scoff at the US military code of justice. Stalying lied - knew it was a lie and lied and continues to lie. He is a failure by his own words of his TED presentation. Fuck him. He is OK with sending more young men to their deaths. His TED speak is just more propaganda. He is as low as a snake's belly in a wagon wheel rut.

Peace out. :)
dexter21380 10 months ago
@dexter21380 I suggest you grow up. The world isn't a perfect place but people like McCrystal sacrifice a lot - more than you or I ever will - to ensure we are free. Of course we all want a world without war, but it takes a singular lack of historical, or indeed any, perspective to think that is realistic. You need to thank your lucky stars people are out there to protect you and give them the respect of listening. You never know, you might learn something.

TED talks are generally thought provoking, fascinating, inspiring and entertaining, they are followed by rapturous cheers.
Then along came Stan. He did try, the poor guy. He even made a couple attempts at humour. But if the crowd laughed it was mostly on the inside.
I'm glad the audience was polite enough to give him a respectful applause when the end eventually arrived.
pnelnik1 10 months ago
The inability to find anything thought provoking, fascinating, or inspiring in his comments suggest a narrow mind. Leadership is difficult in the best circumstances; leadership, especially effective leadership, in a highly stressful environment where live's depend on it is unimaginably difficult. Your comments make it obvious you cannot relate. Anyone having leadership experience cannot help but find his comments at the least, thought provoking, at best, inspiring.

I wish it were into problem solving and building interdependent relationships that build bridges, rather than burning them down.
rpm297 11 months ago
I dream of a world without soldiers “the sinews of war are not gold, but good soldiers" (Niccolo Machiavelli). Good talk about leadership, but do we need sheeps and leaders? do we need a chain of command? In a transparent world, decisions are not a matter of rhetoric, facts speak louder then the opinion of the guys on top. Oh i dream of a world without elite, where decisions are arrived at by scientific consensus based on solid falsifiable studies, without the powerful few and the sheep.
Ultra4 11 months ago
@Ultra4 I doubt that human beings, at least in their current evolutionary state, are capable of moving on into an ideal world. There's always somebody who wants power.
HamsterPants522 11 months ago
@Ultra4 I would rather have decisions made by conscious individuals who have intelligence and feelings and values, than decisions arrived at by scientific consensus. Scientific consensus can't take responsibility. We may debate which individuals, with which values, we put in positions of power. However, I do not believe that blind decisions can be wise decisions.
JeanKM1 11 months ago
@JeanKM1 What feelings? Your subjective ones? What values? Yours, mine, his?
595o 11 months ago
@595o Certainly NOT my subjective feelings, nor yours. I believe that all feelings are subjective. It would be his, the leader's, subjective feelings. Feelings allow the possibility of empathy, compassion, mercy, thought, judgement, and consideration: not ENSURE these things, but not entirely PRECLUDE them. Yes, the leader's values as well, allowing decisions to be considered, rather than arbitrary and heartless. But we should be able to select leaders whose values align with our own.

alovelytime 11 months ago
@alovelytime I'm sure I could have learned many good lessons from Hitler, despite everything he did. Even criminals gain life experiences and wisdom. I agree orders should be disobeyed without hesitation when they deserve disobedience. Anyway, what I agree with most is that the onus is on US, ourselves. @AcidRain64
to be clear, i think everyone should be heard, regardless. i just have a problem with certain suspect political voices being presented out of context of their suspect politics. politics is personal.
alovelytime 10 months ago
@AcidRain64 would you expect a 'dumb' person to make all the right desicions? in my opinion it's not the people who are to blame, it's the system that doesn't cope with an uninformed voter. democracy has a long way to go and with current media and manipulation tactics political groups use, democracy has lost a lot of meaning. we need some real leaders to clean the shit from the walls
stijnhaki 10 months ago
@stijnhaki Of course not; nonetheless, that is the root of the problem. Certainly agree that great leaders would be one means to solving that problem. But from that perspective, a damn good case could be made against democracy and for a smaller elite making the big decisions. I just can't stand when the "dumb" people complain about the circumstances they're complicit in creating or allowing. Fair example, I think, might be bailouts. Wine about 'em, but not willing to deal with the alternative.
AcidRain64 10 months ago
For the record, I don't support bailouts, either.. but I stand by that, and would absolutely be willing to endure a short-term (perhaps even lasting a decade!) hardship if it meant ending up with MUCH better circumstances afterward. We're all in it together. People complain about things but few are willing to take the hits required to change them. It's very frustrating. Talk is cheap. That's all. :-)

Please.

RosenKrantz666 11 months ago 17
@RosenKrantz666 Why not invite other war criminals to speak? If this shows anything, it's that people aren't one-dimensional. I'm sure they would have very interesting things to say.
Loalrikowki 11 months ago

Judging from the quality of your writing, you aren't one of them.

RosenKrantz666 11 months ago
@RosenKrantz666 What part of DEAD didn't you understand? They're DEAD. You can't invite DEAD people to a TEDtalk no matter how interesting their talks, you want to know why? BECAUSE THEY'RE DEAD.
BaileysBeads 11 months ago
@BaileysBeads Hesus Cristos, are you that DAFT? The point was a correlation in inviting a WarCriminal to speak on "leadership, ya historically amnesic invalid. No shit those Nazis are dead, genius! Oh wait, if you were a 'genius' you wouldn't be making asininely repetitive non-comment not worth conversing over. Come back when you've gained a few neurons. Oh wait, that rarely happens. Never mind. Go stand in the corner, adults are still talking.
RosenKrantz666 11 months ago
@RosenKrantz666 Why don't you shut the fuck up and stand up for something. Why don't you actually read up on reality instead of making up bull shit? Oh never mind you are not one that likes to think. You are one who lives in the magical fairy unicorn land where bull shit is spread around as truth and people defending their lives is evil.
thebestsumoeva 11 months ago
RosenKrantz666 11 months ago 2
@RosenKrantz666 No, believing a man is a war criminal for doing his job is believing in unicorns. I'm sad to admit it, but after reading some of the comments on this page I've come to realize there are a lot of dumb fucks like your self posting nonsense. The good news is there still are people out there that understand how the world works and fortunately for both us we don't have to worry tonight because they exist.
thebestsumoeva 11 months ago
@RosenKrantz666 This is the most uninformed, nonsensical comment I have seen in a while.
freedominstinct 11 months ago
RosenKrantz666 11 months ago
@RosenKrantz666 1. He did setup and design legal torture policies, note the word LEGAL. 2. He is not a war criminal for following orders from superiors, this was an authorized use of force from the government and all legal requirements were met. Once again something you'd like to be true just is not. 3. Wall street does not finance war, the tax payers do which wall street is a part of technically, but a majority of the funding comes from tax payers. I'd say something sarcastic, but no need.
thebestsumoeva 11 months ago
RosenKrantz666 11 months ago
@RosenKrantz666 1. You do understand when they say torture they are talking about water boarding or solitary confinement. Water boarding is legal and so is solitary, we do it on our own military members for training. 2. Once again everything he did was authorized and legal, you don't think a General has access to the JAG for legal advice? 3. Wall street is not the federal reserve, it's an investment tool, if you need to separate these entities before we can continue.
thebestsumoeva 11 months ago
@thebestsumoeva If water boarding is legal and not considered torture, then why in did the U.S. charge a Japanese officer, Yukio Asana with waterboarding an American during WWII with a war crime charge? He was sentenced 15 years btw.
chat099 11 months ago
@chat099 ...........Well that was one of many charges against him...........The full charges included beating using hands, fists, club; kicking, burning using cigarettes; strapping of a prisoner on a stretcher with the prisoner's head on a decline for extended periods. This was a real bad guy.
AutoBahnForever 11 months ago
RosenKrantz666 11 months ago
@RosenKrantz666 1. So because we don't torture all it is bad? 2. I don't think cutting knees is legal, just water boarding. 3. Did you read when I said legal? 4. You have some understanding of the fed, but I feel you completely lack how to exactly fix the problems at hand. You simply can not ban the federal reserve in today's economy, you must phase it out and have fundamental monetary reform that I could expand on if you'd like...
thebestsumoeva 11 months ago

RosenKrantz666 11 months ago
I don't know if I believe him when he said leading by consents.... After all he was the one who attempted to push his Afghanistan policy not by trying to convince the leads of this country but by talking to the media and giving speeches that almost bordered insubordination.

The Strongest Military in the world is nothing when you have a critically flawed Foreign Policy....
..Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the man who conceived and directed the Sept.11 terrorist attacks, was motivated by his strong disagreement with U.S. Foreign Policy favoring Israel... 9/11 Commission Report, p147
