Seriously? And that t\line oh my god... fear me, love me, do and I say and I will be your slave... yes! yes! yes! and right now please!
no he represents the devil aspect that she considerd to let rule her and do things like kill her baby brother as we often do in a rage after a argument. hoggle represented materialism and hoggle childishness or something.
@topbluffa Which part of the movie showed her killing her baby brother? Okay to go with the idea that the story is a product of Sarah's imagination:1.Jareth represents her self indulgent nature. He was her villain, she had to defeat him, her childishness, which she was outgrowing. 2.Hoggle is her cowardice that she had to overcome to face obstacles/challenges. 3.Didymus is her loyalty and bravery in the face of adversity. 4.Ludo is her strength.
Jareth was her inner devil that she only entertained allowing to rule her when she was angry about babysitting her little brother but ever since she has been telling she doesnt want to rule her after all. (just like many of us wish our mum was dead half way thru a argument) this is the jareth part of you suggesting he can take over and solve you problems.
Hoggle is a CLEAR representation of her materialism (hence he will do anything for a peice of jewlery) .
Jareth is somewhat more. He is the Goblin King, a ruler.
It begins with immature Sarah, that prefers living in her fantasies rather than dealing with the troublesome real world. Her baby-brother represents her care, which she offers to the ruler of dreams (the OWL) in order to cremate her disrupting sense of care. To forget she is offered dreams.
In order to reverse this, she needs to fight the Construct, find the inner nature of its control and realize its power is an illusion.
Goblin King is another way of Saying Devil and the goblins are demons.
i think you have misunderstood.
they couldn't get a U rating if he was called the Devil. i cant be botherd to re explain this film to people ive done it so many times on other posts look for those :)
the 13th hour on the clock shows this is taking place out of normal space/time and hoggle etc are her little demons that she allows to be in her life at the end she even says "i dont know why i need you but i do" but Jareth was a demon to far that she could only entertain the idea of allowing to be part of her during a big argument but after that she realised he is to much and over the top.
@topbluffa1 You definitely have an interesting point of view. I believe agreeing to disagree will be the best course of action in this instance. Lets just leave this with, This is an excellent movie that could house many different interpretations.
I feel so bad for Jareth, he loved Sarah-maybe he didn't know how to love- but Sarah still broke his heart. She could have at least let him down easy. Plus if she did let him rule over her then he wouldn't have loved her because that isn't who she is.
first of all...yes...my journey as ended...the one pice that no one else has posted on facebook....thx u....rnd of all...eew...she's 15!...way to young...& who knows how he really is...there are laws....besides...remember what he said...its idiotic if u believe him...yes he is awesome here but still.....:)..sweet

I am so thankful my mom showed this to me when I was younger... she was 8 when this came out and she showed it to me when I was 8 :) it is the most amazing movie ever, and this scene... its just... wow.
@cosmicheartcentre I saw it differently, especially since while he's saying it he's pretty much begging - it's clear that despite his words, he's not the one with the upper hand there and never was. But, like other commenters here have said, she was young so she didn't know that. It probably didn't even occur to her that she could've insisted Jareth give her brother back to her parents and let her keep her personal autonomy as well and that he would've said yes rather than not be with her.
@SnotRockets55 i agree snotrocket55 and love the fact she figures it out in the end with her realisation "you have no power over me" and that you can see she was just too young to know all this to start with... but grows and learns so much from her initiation in the 'universal labrynth'. i also wonder... do you think, if the story continued... that we would see how sara loved jareth too ....and that it could have worked out for them both in the end? :)
I always thought of this scene on like a biblical level. It's like he is trying to get her to sell him her soul, and the one line she can never remember is the one line that breaks the spell. "You have no power over me." The clock strikes 13 and the illusion that is his kingdom comes crashing down...maybe I'm reading too much into it...or am I?? hahaha
@diamondog1974 Glad I was not the only one who saw it that way. As seductive and manipulative as the Devil himself. It's almost scary how many people would jump at the opportunity.
It surprises me so many comment on this video. Glad I'm not the only thinking she was crazy. Fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave. That line is sexy as hell.
@ElderRoseThorn Don't be down, one day you will meet somebody who makes you happy. Even more so if you do what makes you happy you will begin to feel more complete. I used to feel the same way like I was always missing something, it took me awhile to figure out I wasn't living up to my own expectations. I started going after what I wanted in my life and I started to find what I was looking for.
i would of stayed with jareth. he will do anything for her,so she could of just asked him to send toby back home and she could of stayed with jareth :)
You ever wonder if fimling this was awkward between the two of them? If it was me i'd be all, "umm... i'm sorry. The tights. The tights are distracting."
@crystalfire294 From my view, was that he is asking her to be his, to love him, to obey him, and in exchange he will be everything she expects of him. Thus the "What have you done that's generous?" "Everything!" exchange. Likely, this is all in her head. You see Bowie in photos with her mom. Sarah expects things of her construct, Jareth. He says "I am exhausted by living up to your expectations of me." He has been bending to her whim without anything in exchange and is frustrated
@lorgy9 Hehehe. Now that you mention it, they should've cast him as the Emperor. ^^ Heck, Jareth even LOOKS like the Emperor in the Famicom Labyrinth game. XD Although, I wonder if, after all these years, if Bowie'd still be able to convey that same 'Bowie charm' in his voice. X3~
Ok can someone explain something to me. How come in this scene all of a sudden Sarah is like super sophisticated speaking wise and all. Did I miss something ?
@sohnnysdream She's reciting from the book. That's why she does that "Damn, I can never remember that line" thing. It's because she's actually really reading lines.
I've just finished the novelization of Labyrinth and it's every bit as charming as I remember the movie (I haven't seen it since I was a kid). Must watch this again! thanks for uploading this scene it's great :))
I've been looking for that! Did you have to pay a lot for it? The lowest price I could find was like 63.00 dollars which I suppose isn't bad since it's out of print or something but still. If you don't mind my asking, how did you obtain yours?? =3
@Musiclovr45 Yeah the physical book is now unfortunately astronomically priced as it's quite rare. There is a free pdf version which a fan has faithfully re-typed (good quality) so more people can enjoy it without scouring ebay auctions for the book. I downloaded the fan made pdf, converted it to a .mobi file and read it on my kindle :)
@Blackbooks78 SO sorry for the late reply but thank you for your speedy one! I truly appreciate it and now I have another reason why I need to finally get a kindle. ^-^
Ok, how did they get away with that back then. So many films where there is a grown man or woman, talking like that to a minor. Haha god ya wud get strung up for that scene nowadays.
That's not fair, all of that was done for him. The Goblin has no right, and neither did she to give her brother away in the first place. Still a great film
That she did all of that because she loved her brother and did not give up on him. As many that go through crap do. although it is also true that she had no right to give her brother away, which is a flaw in the story but one that makes sense the goblin king just tries to take advantage, where you see all the golbins of child stolen are in that position because they have bought the golbin kings lie, and really all they need to do is see that truth.
@BibleJoker2Face Sarah was frustrated, in a background story her mother left (or died) and this new woman who doesn't see eye to eye with her fantasy based nature comes in. Then the family began to expand and she was starting to feel left out. She felt like all she was good for to them was chores (babysitting). It was never Toby she hated but the life she had no control over. Besides she had plenty of chances to quit the quest and she continued because deep down she did love Toby.
@Blazenix1, how was it shown that she loved him (aside from journeying to get him back; please also point me to any scene in the movie that shows that she did love him).
@BibleJoker2Face The scene where she was given the choice between him or the crystal, she choose her brother and was sad at the fact he might be scared. When she heard him crying in the labyrinth she looked worried and was even more determined to get him. She was concerned about him when he went to the upside down staircase part seeing him on the ceiling. And at the very last scene she gave him her toy which started her rage at him in the first place.
@BibleJoker2Face Plus during the Junkyard Lady scene, when she remember her brother she cared more about him and getting him back rather than getting all her toys and things she previously valued.
@BibleJoker2Face I would but I don't have the film on my computer I only have it on video, but you may find the entire movie lurking on the internet somewhere.
This scene was good although I think she might have skipped a line from the book
Also everyone, the goblin king isn't a gracious loser. The story continued in a manga with Sarah being a shell of her former self(not spoiling anything here so you have to read the book for more info, although I'll say she has become, for a lack of a better word,'boring'!)
Not to mention that in the end, Sarah still has her friends at the end of the movie so she didn't REALLY lose out on anything…
I feel sorry for Jareth because he loves her deeply however he comes from a very different place with different customs so he doesn't know how to go about wooing her, he is awkward the way he goes about it, goading her like a little boy pulls a girl's hair to get attention. In this song, he realises she won’t love him and we can hear his heart break; he is misunderstood by the one he wants desperately to understand him. Nothing is as it seems yet she still thinks him a villain.
in this era where all hollywood is doing is remakes/sequels of movies... how in the heck has a sequel to THIS not been made? THE FANS WANT IT! come ON hollywood! she's no longer 15! get this made! :-D Jareth & Sarah FTW! ;)
@crazy4sian Just let me rule you and you can everything that you want. Fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave. = Sarah will be Jareth's "slave" and He will be Her "slave". They would be equals. We like to believe it that way. - Because he is sexy ;)
@crazy4sian The way I see it is that Sarah would hold as much power over him as He would over Her, since being someone's slave means you'd have to everything your asked to. So, Jareth would have to do what sarah wanted and the other way around. Equals.
@PurpleEster Yet he is the one setting the terms of the deal and getting her to act. And when has he ever been one to keep his word? His first impression on her was throwing a snake in her face, threw her in a dungeon, shortened her deadline to save her brother, d*mn near almost KILLED her with the Cleaner, and trapped her in a hallucination.
I mean, as sexy as he is, he is still a giant douche.
@crazy4sian Well, She asked him to take the baby in th first place... That makes her a bad sister/babysitter who needed to learn a lesson. Besides it was an OUBLIETTE and shes the one who fell right into it. I think The Cleaner was only supposed to scare her, but thats my interpretation. The hallucination wasn't even that bad, just another obstacle on her way, like all the others mentioned. He made Her grow up and take responsibility. I also think that Sarah's journey was all Her imagination.
@PurpleEster ... Which means that Sarah created Jareth in Her mind, because she wanted someone to care for Her & want Her (teens..). Labyrinth & Jareth were Her way of proving herself worthy and becoming an adult.
This is really what makes Labyrinth such a good film. Everyone can decide what it's all about and have their own interpretations. This is my way of seeing it, and you have your way, though I most certainly disagree with you ;). This is an interesting conversation, isn't it?
@crazy4sian I think his love is genuine, such as it is, but I tend to agree with you that he doesn't do a good job showing it. I agree with all your sentiments above--he did nothing to convince her he cared for her, and I also don't see that Sarah loves him enough to warrant fanfic romance. Attraction is not the same as love, and Sarah is just not feeling it. Sad that she never got to see his fun, playful side--i.e. dancing around and singing just to keep her baby brother from crying.
you have no power over me... and i will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger, those who would tempt to poison and destroy my brothers! and you will know my name is the lord, when i lay my vengeance upon thee.
it's just my option but i think that ''fear me, love, do as i say and i'll be your slave'' is seriously one of the romantic sentence in movies. Well.... at least that is much more better than twilight's ''and lion fell for a lamb'' or something like that sentence. Seriously, sorry for bad english
was there ever a love story between them?? and wouldnt that make him a pedophile?

"Only what you give me."

Me: Yes!

Me: "I will be your slave" Yep I know! I'm down!
Goblin King: Really? I was also gonna say "let me rule you and fear me".

lorgy9 6 months ago
@lorgy9 Hehehe. Now that you mention it, they should've cast him as the Emperor. ^^ Heck, Jareth even LOOKS like the Emperor in the Famicom Labyrinth game. XD Although, I wonder if, after all these years, if Bowie'd still be able to convey that same 'Bowie charm' in his voice. X3~

Ok can someone explain something to me. How come in this scene all of a sudden Sarah is like super sophisticated speaking wise and all. Did I miss something ?
sohnnysdream 6 months ago
@sohnnysdream She's reciting from the book. That's why she does that "Damn, I can never remember that line" thing. It's because she's actually really reading lines.
AuditoryEden 6 months ago
@sohnnysdream She's acting out her part. If you had practiced the lines all the time in the park you too would sound sophisticated.

I've just finished the novelization of Labyrinth and it's every bit as charming as I remember the movie (I haven't seen it since I was a kid). Must watch this again! thanks for uploading this scene it's great :))

@Blackbooks78 =O
I've been looking for that! Did you have to pay a lot for it? The lowest price I could find was like 63.00 dollars which I suppose isn't bad since it's out of print or something but still. If you don't mind my asking, how did you obtain yours?? =3
Musiclovr45 6 months ago
@Musiclovr45 Yeah the physical book is now unfortunately astronomically priced as it's quite rare. There is a free pdf version which a fan has faithfully re-typed (good quality) so more people can enjoy it without scouring ebay auctions for the book. I downloaded the fan made pdf, converted it to a .mobi file and read it on my kindle :)

@Blackbooks78 SO sorry for the late reply but thank you for your speedy one! I truly appreciate it and now I have another reason why I need to finally get a kindle. ^-^

Either way i still like the movie

it didn't seem to me that Sarah loved her brother.
BibleJoker2Face 7 months ago
@BibleJoker2Face
That's not fair, all of that was done for him. The Goblin has no right, and neither did she to give her brother away in the first place. Still a great film
099749 7 months ago
@099749, please elaborate. it's been several years since i saw the movie.
BibleJoker2Face 7 months ago
@BibleJoker2Face
His power is from them.

@TRIGER517
Read the manga? This story was written by one of the members of Monty Python. Why would I want to read a japaness comicbook spin off?
099749 5 months ago
@BibleJoker2Face Sarah was frustrated, in a background story her mother left (or died) and this new woman who doesn't see eye to eye with her fantasy based nature comes in. Then the family began to expand and she was starting to feel left out. She felt like all she was good for to them was chores (babysitting). It was never Toby she hated but the life she had no control over. Besides she had plenty of chances to quit the quest and she continued because deep down she did love Toby.
Blazenix1 7 months ago
@Blazenix1, how was it shown that she loved him (aside from journeying to get him back; please also point me to any scene in the movie that shows that she did love him).
BibleJoker2Face 7 months ago
@BibleJoker2Face The scene where she was given the choice between him or the crystal, she choose her brother and was sad at the fact he might be scared. When she heard him crying in the labyrinth she looked worried and was even more determined to get him. She was concerned about him when he went to the upside down staircase part seeing him on the ceiling. And at the very last scene she gave him her toy which started her rage at him in the first place.
Blazenix1 7 months ago
@BibleJoker2Face Plus during the Junkyard Lady scene, when she remember her brother she cared more about him and getting him back rather than getting all her toys and things she previously valued.
Blazenix1 7 months ago
@Blazenix1, please tell me at exactly what point in the movie these scenes occur.

Is everyone really so blinded by his good loks ?As tempting and enticing as the offer may be, this is a trap no matter how you look at it.
"I ask for so little. Just let me rule you and you can everything that you want. Fear me, love me, do as I say and I will forever be your slave."
I can see the devil saying the same thing: "I ask for so little. Just give me your soul and you can have everything you want."
crazy4sian 8 months ago
@crazy4sian Just let me rule you and you can everything that you want. Fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave. = Sarah will be Jareth's "slave" and He will be Her "slave". They would be equals. We like to believe it that way. - Because he is sexy ;)
PurpleEster 8 months ago 3
@PurpleEster Yet he still has power over her. How can they be equal?
crazy4sian 8 months ago
@crazy4sian The way I see it is that Sarah would hold as much power over him as He would over Her, since being someone's slave means you'd have to everything your asked to. So, Jareth would have to do what sarah wanted and the other way around. Equals.
Did I mention how sexy He is?
PurpleEster 8 months ago
@PurpleEster Yet he is the one setting the terms of the deal and getting her to act. And when has he ever been one to keep his word? His first impression on her was throwing a snake in her face, threw her in a dungeon, shortened her deadline to save her brother, d*mn near almost KILLED her with the Cleaner, and trapped her in a hallucination.
I mean, as sexy as he is, he is still a giant douche.
crazy4sian 8 months ago 2
@crazy4sian Well, She asked him to take the baby in th first place... That makes her a bad sister/babysitter who needed to learn a lesson. Besides it was an OUBLIETTE and shes the one who fell right into it. I think The Cleaner was only supposed to scare her, but thats my interpretation. The hallucination wasn't even that bad, just another obstacle on her way, like all the others mentioned. He made Her grow up and take responsibility. I also think that Sarah's journey was all Her imagination.
PurpleEster 8 months ago
@PurpleEster ... Which means that Sarah created Jareth in Her mind, because she wanted someone to care for Her & want Her (teens..). Labyrinth & Jareth were Her way of proving herself worthy and becoming an adult.
This is really what makes Labyrinth such a good film. Everyone can decide what it's all about and have their own interpretations. This is my way of seeing it, and you have your way, though I most certainly disagree with you ;). This is an interesting conversation, isn't it?
PurpleEster 8 months ago 2
@crazy4sian I think his love is genuine, such as it is, but I tend to agree with you that he doesn't do a good job showing it. I agree with all your sentiments above--he did nothing to convince her he cared for her, and I also don't see that Sarah loves him enough to warrant fanfic romance. Attraction is not the same as love, and Sarah is just not feeling it. Sad that she never got to see his fun, playful side--i.e. dancing around and singing just to keep her baby brother from crying.

it's just my option but i think that ''fear me, love, do as i say and i'll be your slave'' is seriously one of the romantic sentence in movies. Well.... at least that is much more better than twilight's ''and lion fell for a lamb'' or something like that sentence. Seriously, sorry for bad english
