I met Him at a benefit we were playing and had the pleasure of jamming with him backstage. I saw him about a year later as he got into my cab at the airport. I had just seen him on "Matloc" a week before saying "we find the defendant guilty". Truly great musician and great guy.
@W1l2L3L4ARD I have all of Stephen's music and love all of it. So happy I found this treasure. Before I moved from Tx to Or. I went by and got to talk to Sumter also saw a show (Malford Milligan) with him and some family. Very nice people.
Stephen Bruton was a true genius. Anyone who can't recognize that simply hasn't evolved far enough yet. He is my song writing hero. I just love his amazing style. The good always die far too young. We MISS you Stephen!
I've just spent the last two hours playing along with all of these fantastic songs and realize that I'm a little lonely for his prolific writing...I just love him!
@bluesbabe: Record store is called Record Town, located on University Drive, directly across the street from TCU, in first block north of Berry St.. Store still owned by family and run by Sumpter Bruton.
I grew up down the street from Stephen's brother and had the pleasure of meeting him once at their family owned record store in Ft. Worth. A truly amazing talent. RIP Stephen.
For those of us unfortunate enough never to have heard of SB before Crazy Heart - - Jesus H. Christ!!! What a truly amazing talent - - and what an amazing song this is. Can't wait until I get to jam with him upstairs. Anyone know where I can find the chords?
@dylanelvis Hate to say it but I am one of those that found Stephen through Crazy Heart. Guess better than never finding him and his music. Just hate the fact that he is gone :(
@Bluesbabesrv I was just dumb lucky to be living in a town where his guitar player friend (Michael O'Neill) lives. I got to see Stephen in a small club here several times and I treasure every memory of that. Sorry you couldn't have enjoyed him in that way too. Glad you liked what he did in Crazy Heart.
damn, can't believe he's gone. It was such a pleasure to have seen him 2 consecutive days in Holland a couple of years back. the 2nd night was accoustic, small crowd, it was a real pleasure.
It's with deep sadness I got the news about TSB death. Since the first time I saw him smiling threw a hole Bonnie Raitt show in Gothenburg Sweden in the early 90', I've been following Stephens music. I been lucky to catch him two times solo in Sweden and once in Austin. He's music and lyrics has made me cry, smile and laugh threw the years. I never got to know him, but he felt like a friend. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Stephen
sybill, surprised to see this on my main page, and to see your name here. long time no speak! as i used a different "handle" for some unknown reason when i signed on to youtube, i bet you'd be surprised to know that my real name is steven brunton. this was quite a coincidence to see this. good song, good voice, good playing. shades of albert lee. and a voice like my all time fave, dave edmunds.
I had the great pleasure of having a couple of drinks with Stephen on the Delbert Blues Cruise a few years ago. He was a wonderful song writer, a great musician and an amazing man. I'm sorry to learn of his death. It's a sad day.
I've only just discovered this guy through "Across the borderline" by Willie Nelson. In my ignorance I always thought "Getting over you" was by Willie himself. I love the music and I'm really sorry to hear he is unwell. Still, if John Prine can recover from throat cancer, I hope Stephen can as well.
God answers all prayers. Unfortunately sometimes the answer is No. Hoping and waiting for a Yes. God, in his wisdom, will ultimately do what's best for Stephen. Love to him and family.
Stephen is fighting like hell to beat his cancer . the long haul does not look very good at all .best anyone could do now is pray for him at this point.
I lived in Austin for 10 years and never got tired of seeing/hearing Stephen play live. He's an amazing and inspiring musician and his songs are intelligent, perfectly crafted and thought-provoking.
So sad to hear that he is not doing well.
Anyone who says he is talentless is simply ignorant. Just ask any musician.
Stephen is my brother-in-law. Please, if anyone knows who piggzey is, tell me where the mother-fucker lives so I can go there and kick it's ass. Seriously, the idiot piggzeys of this world should be neutered and lobotomized. My sister and my family are going through hell over his impending death which is just days away. Again, I am in an ass-kicking mood. But, more important Stephen needs your prayers to Christ and MAry so he can go peacefully. THX
jbhafford- Pig (in piggzey) is the first clue..ignore their ass, attention is what they strive for. I listened to Stephens' tape on sat. (yes, still have tapes) when another band said he was in ICU. I raise my glass to a fine musican and more importantly a fine person. I think if anyone will greet him on his way home, it will be Mambo John Treanor. May God protect and guide him. "Gott Schutze Dich".
Stephen Bruton is THE most seasoned veteran side-man turned prolific American songwriter of our time...pay attention! SONGWRITERS...check me on this, listen to "From the Five"!!

I am an Englishman who came to Stephen's music late. He died within a year of me "finding" him sadly. I just love his stuff. Love it.

Not only are you an idiot, piggzey, but you are unable to express yourself.
Kindly take yourself away and cease to annoy those of us who enjoy TSB's talent.

It was throat cancer and reportedly now has a clean bill of health.

Great piece. If you dig Bruton check out Rocking the Boat: A Musical Conversation and Journey. He tells a great story and has two songs in the movie.
