@AntaresInScorpius I think you'll find that the word gay does not and never has meant "stupid" or "gross" and the use of it in that way is frankly offensive.
@DynastySoldier it does now. Language isnt static. It changes and evolves. Gay used to mean "homosexual". Now it means gross, stupid, ignorant. For example. Your comment dynastysoldier is GAY.
I LOVE THIS SONG! We are singing it in our 5th grade program it is our finale. my teacher really taught us the meaning of this song so now when everyone sings it we really lose ourselves in the words because it is truly an amazing song!
@16emem - brilliant! If you haven't done it yet, then I hope you have a great time. Make sure someone gets it on video and keep it safe so you can look back at it in years to come. ALL THE BEST x
This just reminds me how precious the ability to choose and become successful in some countries is. Freedom to decide and strive in this world is really something we take for granted in our day to day lives. This song really stresses the point that as one, we are weak, but as a whole, the working class is the most powerful force on the planet.
@Blackgod21ftw you are stupid and wrong. This was never a 'theme song' for the French revolution. It was written along with the rest of the Musical in 1980. It was written in English and although may have been translated into French, If you ask the average French person about it, they will say they have never heard it. If you believe that the French where singing this song on the scaffolds during the revolution you are not only ignorant but incredibly stupid.
@agrigoat I can indeed distinguish between the two events. Although the June rebellion of 1832 is known as, 'a rebellion' rather than a revolution, to reflect its relatively small scale when compared with other much larger french revolts such as that of July 1830 of which the scaffolds in Paris were of much more significance than in 1832.
@agrigoat However, I want to point out that the mistake of saying that this song was about the French revolution of 1789 was that of the person to whom my message was addressed. One can forgive this mistake quite easily considering that the french had so many revolutions during that period that it is a little hard to keep track of which one someone is referring to when they talk about THE 'french revolution'.
This is an incredible musical. One of which that is very accurately portrayed from the people's POV. I think it is better than any history lesson just keep along with the lyrics.
@Phantomfan61 If you mean you wish you were alive during the French revolution then you don't know much about it. It was a dangerous time, not only for the aristocracy but for the peasants also. Countless peasants were put the the guillotine by members of their own class for the most minor crimes. It was a time of fearful prejudice, scaremongering and Murder. The French revolution was far less glorious than the neo-revolutionaries and anarchists would have you believe.
@tiamonke Haha oh no I didn't mean the French revolution. I know the French revolution was a terrible time and I'm so blessed to not have to witness it :) I ment I wish I was at the concert at the time it was performed! The 10th anniversary sounds so beautiful and I wish I was there to see it! But I wasn't alive at the time of the concert :(
What is this musical about ? This is really beautiful, but I'm sure it'll make a WORLD more of sense if I know what they're fighting for and what it's all about. anyone please explain ?
@just1otherfan It's about the French Revolution. It was a really crucial moment in French and even European history. The gist is that the royal family under Louis the XIV just about ran the populace into the ground with taxes, combined with bad harvests which resulted in starvation. The government was also ludicrously in debt and widely seen as inept and wasteful, then throw in the fact the Enlightenment was starting in Europe. Wiki knows a lot more than I do about the details!
@SimonEiri honestly get your facts right! It was Louis XVI. And whilst this song is indeed about the Revolution (specifically the 1832 June Rebellion), for most of the musical and indeed Victor Hugo's book, it only served as a backdrop to the more personal stories of Jean Valjean, Fantine, Cosette, Marius, and of course Javert
@nicolemellano Alright alright. XD Maybe I had a dyslexic moment, no need to get huffy. I know only a little bit about the history, and I have to say this has to be one of the things that made me look it up at all. And my other sources of interest are far less illustrious. It was a fascinating, but complicated time, which is why I directed people to the wiki article on it. Hopefully no one takes the information I gave with any seriousness. There was a reason I had the link at hand!
Funny how people who probably wouldn't listen to The Internationale if they were paid to do so will spend money of listening to this song which essentially has the same message. One of the most subtle jokes in "American Psycho"...
I though ten lyrics were: Do you hear the people sing singing the song of angry men? When the beating of the heart echoes there is a life a out to start! Will you you join in our crusade whoo will be strong and join with me? Beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see? So join in the fight that will give you the right to be.
Holy crap! I got goosebumps that lasted for hrs after hearing this! AND it got me a boner! We need this, the working men must join together and purge the world of Thatcherism and neoliberalism. Long Live the Proletariat!
Long live the revolution, and the struggle for human freedom. From France to Russia to China to Nepal, the people will not stop singing until we are free. <3
What makes me saddest about this play is that it has never yet been equaled. I want live to see another play this great before I hear my own swan song.
This song is so moving! And even though the setting is 18th century France, it could be applied to anytime or anyplace! I could imagine a group gathering outside of the whitehouse to sing this.
in middle school orchestra we had to play the instrumental version for our holiday concert and we went to see this musical a week before our concert. it was awesome!
I saw this musical for the first time today performed by a group of high schoolers and i must say it is the best musical i have ever seen! And I love this song!
Outstanding video! It brings tears to my eyes every time I see and hear it. I performed the medley from this a few years ago and I had a hard time with this sing then. This is one of many selections that are so movint that they would melt stone.
I get the cheels when i hear this song, its so aswome! I wish i was there ! Les Miserables is one of the best musicals of all time. Where does Lloyd Webber get all his ideas from!? 5/5
To cry wether you are happy, sad, or rightchously indignant, it only shows the passion within! Why hide such a wonderful expression? This song should be the theme for America's people today! NO MORE!
I listen to this song and weep giant tears every time. Regardless of which lyrics (be it this or the earlier version in the show) it matters not. It is simply THE SONG, the best there is, the best there ever was.
I wish I could have been there, although Id be sobbing like an infant and probably asked to leave, hehe.
This song speaks to the heart and soul unlike any other. It is, in a word, mismerizing.
I saw its last ever performance om Broadway and it was awesome. the cast really gave it their all...and there was about a 15-20 minute standing O after the show ended.
We played this song in band...and then I saw this musical on my own. It's such a powerful and majestic ending to the performance. Me and my friend ran out of the school on the last day, screaming this song out.
Just gotta love songs from Les Miserables. It is one of the best musicals to have ever been done and this song nearly epitomizes it with the emotion and power given off by the people who sing it. No matter when or where this song will always mean something.
eu adoro esse MUSICAL. OS ANOS PASSAM E EU CONTINUO FICANDO EXTASIADA FRENTE 'AOS MISERÁVEIS'. É MUITO ATUALIZADO EM SUAS LETRAS E EM SUA MÚSICA. É FORMIDÁVEL. EMOCIONANTE.
Oh... my. Few people can make something, like Les Miserables, that has sich conviction. Such hope and dignity, such a time where people would die for honor, and the hope of freedom. (Not saying people don't today, just saying more people were willing back then) I loved how "Do You Hear the People Sing?" was kind of sad, realizing how sad these people were. But at this song it is of their powerful hope, and determination that this song should make you feel.
Haha, I know. I seriously don't know why I cried. But it's not like I was sobbing or anything. I just got tears. It's still pretty dumb, though, I know.
It's not dumb at all; it happens to me, too. It's not that it's sad or anything, even, but it's pretty much because this song is so emotionally powerful. I mean, who can't relate to the love of freedom and the willingness to do anything for it?

Oh...
