My god.. NOBODY is EVER going to try and attack the top of your head with a knife, in a straight arm posture, and then politely freeze so you can do your fancy bull shit moves.
Garbage like this that gets classed as "self defense" is going to get you KILLED if you even attempt it. It's utter crap.
@ytmpav i also Practice Shotokan Karate and Didier Lupo's applications are just that Didier Lupo's. They are not representative of shotokan Karate self defence applications. although they are representative of a type of interpretation of kata bunkai which I think is impractical...
There is absolute disregard for the knife in all of these defenses. Your first priority should be to disable the weapon and there is none of that here. In fact, in a few of techniques shown you would actually be cut by the knife in executing your block - poor theory and lack-luster application.
It is understandable that you do not agree with some of these techniques, and that's fine, its your opinion. However, there is not just one school of Shotokan, there are several, and their techniques can vary between schools. I have practiced similar techniques to the ones seen in the video and i can tell you that they do work.
@SakuKoivuRocks May I remind you that Shotokan is a school of karate all on its own? To say that there are different schools of Shotokan karate is absolute nonsense - you either practice Shoto or you're practicing something else. Besides, this has nothing to do with the incompetence, objectively defined and independent of anyone's opinion, displayed in this video. The bottom line is - there is absolutely no control of the knife hand in any of these and this makes all the techniques useless.
All of the defnce moves shown above will work if it drilled into simulating reality, I am studying shotokan since 1996 and it has saved my life before...Those of you who dont have anything good to say about the techniques havent seen them in reality...
@mirageF1AZ Actually all the ones who keep crying has never been in a real fight. I don't know much about Shotokan but I am sure if you drill techniques than they will come in handy.
Obviously they wouldn't work 100% of the time, nobody said it would, but I'm sure someone who's fluent in the art of Shotokan or any other style would have more of a chance defending against a knife attack compared to a normal person. There's a reason why it's called karate, it's open handed combat.
My money is on the guy with the knife. Knives aren't called 'weapons' for no reason. 5 minutes knife practice by an aggressive attacker will undo 5 years of martial arts practice by an 'expert'. Knives are the ultimate concealed weapon and can slash & cut quickly in different directions faster than any human can react. If you take on a knife attacker you'd better be prepared to get cut.
All martial arts have something to offer. If you want to work knife defence one humble word of advice is put white shirts/pants on and use a no lie blade or a washable marker and let the other guy come at you using anything. At the end see how many times you got marked and adjust your training accordingly.
Those knife defenses will never work. If the attacker really wanted to hurt you he will keep stabbing until he hits you. Plus unless you are in a Bruce lee movie you will never be able to catch somebody's hand as they stab at you using full force.
I've studied Shotokan and didn't learn any of those moves for a knife defense. I'm sorry but I don't agree with the techniques. I would like to say thanks for taking the time to make the video. I enjoyed it.
Thats one way to do it, however, it feels a bit off for some reason. I think that its the stances and the large movements. I found that it works better for me when I'm moving the least and drawing the attacker in rather than using very deep stances. I don't find that I have a lot of mobility in a backstance, but rather just take a small step away where the technique would still be effective without compromising mobility. Just a thought, and another humble opinion.
Action is faster then reaction and when fighting against armed enemies fear-factor and energy dump might takes place that can shorten the reflex time as you have to be like water to be on highest defensive alert, i find that pull back and try confuse meanwhile taking of belt and shirt then i have shirt as defensice distraction shield and belt as swinging weapon, and length advantage, a few hits in the head with a belt buckle will make most knife attackers run.
Well, this may be not the best example for defending against a knifeattack. It could be called a bit naive because people who use knifes for an attack normally know how to use and (thats a shame) hide the knife till the attack will be succesfull.
@DragonZord90 Seen this clip you're on about.I teach thie philtrum TD and the hypoglosoal into a sukomi otoshi as in the opening to Heian Yondan(take down backwards over the knee,i think this maybe a similar technique to your own.I like to use Tettsui to the bladder when opponent is stretched out backwards.Carefull it does have a tendency to empty if it's full :)then you have a person with a map of Africa on your hands.Regards.
@DragonZord90 Hi,agree totally that a cross block is better than uper rising going to the inside.I would show this to students as a bad practice of upper rising block.I'd use x block, can use hikite to pull in attacker and finish the defence off after.if the attacker can recoil the arm you can go into a figure four and take him down.Much safer.:)
Never want to stop the attack. You may are weaker than your opponent and theirs arm is moving, so you cant stop it. And in the real life you can only make mistake once. Then you die. Use their own power against them! But you know it!
Best defence against kinfe is run.

And in karate before self defense moves are taught, the concept of avoiding the situation is taught first
