  • Actually, x-picking was not done "a long time" before Jesse. Jesse McReynolds invented the x-picking style; indeed imitating the 5-string banjo roll.

  • @mandoist maybe the term x picking. I have heard tunes well before Jesse with folks playing it.

  • Great lesson....Thanks!

  • Hello kind sir...I made a crosspicking vid giving special thanks to you...

  • Neat hat. One doesn't see too many blue grass bands on the slopes at Aspen. But, seriously, loved this simple approach. I'm going to try to work it in to my repertoire!

  • This is great! Thank you for sharing this info, I just got my mandolin and I can follow along with you! Awesome!

  • This is a great instructional video. Well paced, and great playing and style. Thanks for the breakdown...breakdown!

  • magnificent thanks!

  • Thanks

  • so..... is cross picking always this down up up....... or can cross picking be just any picking using different strings in a rhythmic matter like this...... ??

    /

  • The 16 people who disliked this need a good butt whooping.

  • These lessons are great and I thank you so much for putting them on youtube! I've only just started on my mandolin and so I'm finding these lessons to be so helpful. I love this cross-picking technique - it's a cool effect. I wonder if this technique would allow someone to play the banjo part of "Foggy Mountaing Breakdown", since it sounds rather "banjo-y." Thanks again!

  • makes sense, thanks a lot!

  • this might seem like a stupid question, but i dont own a mandolin so im just wondering. if this guy says to play the second fret on the G string (for instance) does that mean you hold down the second fret of both G strings and pluck them both? or just one.

  • @germaniumbass Yes, always both strings. :)

  • @germaniumbass notes have less sustain and volume than larger/lower instruments with larger scale lengths, and doubling up the strings helps with volume by sending 2x the energy to the soundboard.

  • @germaniumbass you play both, on a mandolin you treat the pairs of strings as one string... most of the time

  • Great technique, should be very helpful, but the look at the end cracks me up. ;)

  • Wow great teaching. Very clear

  • I love finding gems like this, thanks for sharing your knowledge.

  • excellent exercise........

  • do i just pick one string on the D,A and E or both?

  • Why is there only sound on the left speaker?

  • @Canyarion lol mine is only on the right one :P

  • @TheElekt

your speakers are backwards or your headphones are on backwards

  • @Canyarion im guessing cuz the dumbass positioned the mic in such a clever spot wayyyyyyyy on the left.

  • Actually it's BILE them cabbage down.

  • We all disagree on the name of this tune..LOL! I think your right though it is bile them cabbage. Mr. Hannigan can play though!

  • can someone tell me what the name of the song is? i can't understand what he's saying, sounds to me like "follow the cabbage down" but i know thats not right :)

  • it s BOIL THAT CABBAGE DOWN:)

  • actually it's boil THEM cabbage down.

  • actually you are right LOL

  • i find that it's much more simple just to do finger picking, well i guess it depends who you are. the sound is a little different i grew my finger nails out so they act like picks but you can stll do it with out that

  • another question: is there any reason why he specifies to downstroke or upstroke? does it make a difference?

  • you want each note you play to lead to the next. if you upstroke on the D string you are headed towards G. It's basically the way to play the fastest with the most accuracy

  • yes.

  • Great job Anthony! You make it look sooo easy.

  • well, Mr. music moose could make a playlist right here, in youtube, with the videos in correct order!

  • Thanks

  • quien me puede dar un dato de esto en espàñol!!!!!

  • could someone please give me a link they know of to a good starting point for a beginner at mandolin. This video is helpful but is too advanced and i cant seem to find a decent way to move past the basics

  • Nothing can substitute for a real human teacher for that. Where do you live?

  • southern new jersey

  • i have the same problem, i went onto amazon and got an instruction dvd which is helpful as it is less fragmented than trying to search through these lessons, which are good but it's difficult to find continuity. Good luck!

  • Thank you very much for this video I am learning to play the mandolin and I love finding new techniques.

  • Thanksmusicmoosedotorg!Urgoodatthis!!!

  • Thanks for thoses great mandolin lesson, find a teacher in Québec city is not easy.

  • absolutely! i'm in hertfordshire, england and believe me there aren't many here!!

  • The origins of sweep-picking...

  • superb lesson I can use that technique for shred guitar aswell!

  • i really want the mandolin im just wondering is it easyer than the guitar and also cus i played the guitar would i pick it up easy or struggle

  • I have one, it"s not to hard, if you finger pick a guitar then your half way there, listen to bill monroe & these free lessons, good luck!!

  • I just got mine today and I can play along with some folk. It's fairly easy if you've been playing guitar a while.

  • thank you SO much for this!!

  • Fabulous--this is one of the most mystifying of all mandolin style. Thanks for breaking it down!

  • oooooooooo... that's neat. I've been doing all down, up. That's a cool little pattern. Kinda like the drag stroke on the drums. nice

  • just out of sheer curiosity... how many instruments do you play?

  • GrapefruityTikbit, I mean...

  • really just drums, guitar, mando

  • such a beautiful little instrument

  • THat was a sweet lesson.

  • Crosspicking interesting.

  • This was interesting. I took some notes on this particular video and I'm gonna practice it. Thanks!

  • Great job Anthony. Really enjoyed your short video. I've visited your site, and will be looking for songs to print out. I'm just getting started, so had never heard of this technique before, but LOVE it. Keep up the good work Anthony.

  • Thanks for taking the trouble to do this. Very helpful.

  • is the upstring picking ok? i thought this was taboo in bluegrass?

  • Bigwn, I think it's fine. I've heard lots about the down up up technique. I just haven't really known where to apply it. Chris Thile does down up down down up down down up for 3/4 and 6/8.

  • THANKS MAN!!!!

  • what model do you play?

i want to star playing really really bad but i want to know a cheaper model that still preforms good enough to learn on

i want a gibson F-5 distressed model but it looks expensive help would be nice :]

  • The letter tell you the shape of the Mandolin.

The number after it tell you the quantity and quality of ornaments on the mandolin.

5 being the most ornamented kind of mandolins, f being the most complicated shape of mandolin and Gibson being a company making quality and relatively costly instruments, this instrument IS expensive.

  • Great lesson! I'm pretty much self taught & played guitar in rock bands most my life so you can imagine how my pickin action sounds. I get a lot of complements but there are some down home who just don't believe it should be played like that so your lesson(s) will help me a whole lot being I went to school where Ricky Skaggs did I need to know how to play actual bluegrass! The mandolin is so refreshing for me.

  • Thanks, Amp Dog.

  • Hehehe thank u now i know a lil about the mandolin..

  • Great little lesson! thanks!

  • I think the mandolin is kinda small for me... I always liked the sound, but it just doesn't agree with my hands, guitar / banjo are cool for me... Sitar anybody? I wish I had a sitar, lol.

  • I play sitar.

  • ottimo, bravissimo.

    ... very good

    from Italy

  • thnx for explaining that, never realy thought about it, it just goes out my fingers.

    Peace from Alaska

  • That's awesome... Thanks for sharing

  • Cool Lesson!

  • Thanks for this great help!
