Neat hat. One doesn't see too many blue grass bands on the slopes at Aspen. But, seriously, loved this simple approach. I'm going to try to work it in to my repertoire!
so..... is cross picking always this down up up....... or can cross picking be just any picking using different strings in a rhythmic matter like this...... ??
These lessons are great and I thank you so much for putting them on youtube! I've only just started on my mandolin and so I'm finding these lessons to be so helpful. I love this cross-picking technique - it's a cool effect. I wonder if this technique would allow someone to play the banjo part of "Foggy Mountaing Breakdown", since it sounds rather "banjo-y." Thanks again!
this might seem like a stupid question, but i dont own a mandolin so im just wondering. if this guy says to play the second fret on the G string (for instance) does that mean you hold down the second fret of both G strings and pluck them both? or just one.
@germaniumbass notes have less sustain and volume than larger/lower instruments with larger scale lengths, and doubling up the strings helps with volume by sending 2x the energy to the soundboard.
can someone tell me what the name of the song is? i can't understand what he's saying, sounds to me like "follow the cabbage down" but i know thats not right :)
i find that it's much more simple just to do finger picking, well i guess it depends who you are. the sound is a little different i grew my finger nails out so they act like picks but you can stll do it with out that
you want each note you play to lead to the next. if you upstroke on the D string you are headed towards G. It's basically the way to play the fastest with the most accuracy
could someone please give me a link they know of to a good starting point for a beginner at mandolin. This video is helpful but is too advanced and i cant seem to find a decent way to move past the basics
i have the same problem, i went onto amazon and got an instruction dvd which is helpful as it is less fragmented than trying to search through these lessons, which are good but it's difficult to find continuity. Good luck!
Great job Anthony. Really enjoyed your short video. I've visited your site, and will be looking for songs to print out. I'm just getting started, so had never heard of this technique before, but LOVE it. Keep up the good work Anthony.
Bigwn, I think it's fine. I've heard lots about the down up up technique. I just haven't really known where to apply it. Chris Thile does down up down down up down down up for 3/4 and 6/8.
The number after it tell you the quantity and quality of ornaments on the mandolin.
5 being the most ornamented kind of mandolins, f being the most complicated shape of mandolin and Gibson being a company making quality and relatively costly instruments, this instrument IS expensive.
Great lesson! I'm pretty much self taught & played guitar in rock bands most my life so you can imagine how my pickin action sounds. I get a lot of complements but there are some down home who just don't believe it should be played like that so your lesson(s) will help me a whole lot being I went to school where Ricky Skaggs did I need to know how to play actual bluegrass! The mandolin is so refreshing for me.
I think the mandolin is kinda small for me... I always liked the sound, but it just doesn't agree with my hands, guitar / banjo are cool for me... Sitar anybody? I wish I had a sitar, lol.
Actually, x-picking was not done "a long time" before Jesse. Jesse McReynolds invented the x-picking style; indeed imitating the 5-string banjo roll.
mandoist 6 months ago
@mandoist maybe the term x picking. I have heard tunes well before Jesse with folks playing it.

@germaniumbass you play both, on a mandolin you treat the pairs of strings as one string... most of the time
