Unless you support abolishing financial aid for college then you have no grounds to complain. I would rather see people contribute SOMETHING to get financial aid than for everyone to just get if for nothing. Giving financial aid this way would incentivise the system. Us older folks remember what happened the last time there was a draft in the U.S. Those that evaded service got off with a slap on the wrist thanks to bleeding hearts like Jimmy carter. Those that obeyed the law came back fucked up , crippled , with lost limbs or came back in metal coffins. In my opinion , if the shit ever really hit the fan and we couldn't raise enough volunteers to defend ourselves, then our society is to too sick , selfish and cowardly to deserve survival anyhow.

To be clear, the original bill didn't call for a mandatory public service program, but called for the exploration of whether one could be established. But the entire section on creating a "Congressional Commission on Civic Service" was stripped from the bill.

Serve the community by going into a civilian defense program and mandatory community service? Nobody should EVER be forced to do that. Its socialism, fascism, tyranny. If everyone wants to help on their own watch (and plenty of people do, its called salvation army, food banks, US army) then thats a wonderful thing to do.
