  • geez could you compress this vid anymore

  • Don't reply to comments made two years ago. =/

  • sound quality blows...

  • Thanks for giving lessons from MOON.......or some other planet....

  • bass lessons inside a bottle

  • Plissken07, It seems as if you're playing the bass in a classical guitar style. When I first started I had the same problem as you. I good tool to use when changing your plucking hand to rest on strings then fly up on them is to wrap a rubber band around your strumming fingers and begin playing the bass that way for about 2 weeks. You'll notice that resting on strings is less tiring and will have positive effect on a more earthy sound then a punk sound.

  • This was nothing like what i was expecting, Change the title of the vid!! many lols

  • I'm sorry, but I don't understand how you can't pluck the strings. He says to just "pull" them. I tried this...he says that you should have your fingers rest on the string after you pull a string. For example if you pull open G, then right after it should be resting on D. Super hard. I guess you just have to practive over and over.

So, is this the right way? Or is it one way? Is plucking bad?

  • I appreciate this...but it amazes me that if a series of vids is planned that the sound(especially)and video would not be better worked out beforehand. this would be great if the quality was not some of the worst on youtube.

  • I did apply this fingering method to my bass playing and my speed did improve, along with my confidence which in turn improved my playing all around. Thanks a ton for your lessons, you're a good man.

  • its low quality video ...

  • Congrat S.Holmes

Good lesson but the quality to bad to watch

  • The camera/sound quality is so fuckin' bad, I can't bear to watch the whole thing.

  • thank you so much man!! I was looking for something else, I was trying to find the best way to emulate a double bass on a standard electric guitar bass, you know, for the rounded sound you can get with your right hand, and I finally find the solution! It's pretty obvious when you look at it, but I was having a really bad time figuring out... hahhaha. I just put my strap in front of the bass and thats it. =)

  • cyber wtf

  • the sound quality the sound gives me a head ache!

  • I really don't agree with this. Your middle finger naturally is stronger than your index finger. Therefore, when you play a 1-2-3-4 rythm, you should always play m-i-m-i, even when you go to a different string. That way you always emphasise the most important notes.

And when you play your g string, your thumb should be on your a string to mute the e + a string.

He's got his thumb on the e string (1:20), so the a string can vibrate and produce noise. Now that's not a good thing, is it?

  • I guess what works for you works for you... Fact is hes played with Frank Gambale and Chick Corea making him a very reliable source in my opinion...

  • Nice point, i am comfortable with m-i series, if not for the bad quality of the vid and audio, this would've been a real nice beginners vid.

  • Well, off course you should just do what feels best. But it´s better first to get comfortable with plucking smoothly, before doing it in a different way. If you gotta play a riff wich covers bigger intervals, it can be better to keep your fingers stationary.

  • @BassBoy1000S

not necessarily. Some people uses the pinky and the ring for muting open strings. By the way this is an exercise to get some independence in the finger's movement, in certain occasions you'll need to emphatize with the index instead the middle. It's known that bunny brunel has a very proper technique.

  • @BassBoy1000S Hm I think your initial starting finger either if its middle or index is personal. And hes not showing muting with his left hand, which is personal too.

  • about the thumb, it doesn't really matter where you rest it, it's all about what's comfortable for you, people like to try to tell you what is right and wrong in playing an instrument, when the truth is, you should be comfortable while playing

  • And what about the thump???

Most people say the ´thum should rest on the string below the string you are picking!

    Isn´t that right????

  • check out my bass lesson on picking!

  • After watching just this and the second bass lesson vid, I now fully realize that I'm a n00b bassist that's been playing for 12 years. Wow. Thank you for putting these online, after just a couple of days practicing these techniques I feel myself much more confident and not stumbling around as much!

  • He has very feminine fingers. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

  • 1 is the index finger and 2 is the middle finger

  • im confused

  • which part are you confused about? I studied with bunny for a while and we went deep into the RH stuff. I can explain it more clearly if you need me to.

  • ya im confused too i dont understand wich finger is 1 and wich finger is 2

  • 1 - index

    2 - middle

    3 - ring

    4 - pinky

  • Gidday ! I'm trying my best to use straight fingers, but I seem to be catching my fingernail on the way past the strings?! My nails are not long at all:) It gives a very sharp noise which is not nice :( Any tips?

    CHeers

  • I had that problem a while back but I fixed it. Try "walking" with straight fingers instead of "plucking" with bent fingers. It will clear your fingernails from the strings, letting the fleshy part of your finger tips to hit the strings instead of your fingernails.

  • I got the same problem when I use my middlefinger. The nails grow so fast.

Try using a file to make them as short as possible. Also try to roll over the the strings a bit more.

  • I'm having a hard time muting the strings using the right hand according to what Bunny Brunel says in this video.

I usually mute the lower strings by resting my thumb against them, but to do the Brunel Technique it's mandatory to have the hand raised. How do you mute the lower strings?

  • curbowman,

Try muting with your index or pinky (left hand).

What he is teaching here is fundamentals, if you apply them constantly, you will be able to play better, faster and more accuratly.

I am surprised he didnt emphasize on trying to sound the same with either finger, that is probably the most important thing you should try to achieve.

  • I so do not know what you talking about.

I really need to get help.

  • it be a lot easier if the video was clear, its blurry

  • I agree.

  • thanks!

  • Brilliant. Thankyou very much.
