If you all want to absolutely ENJOY this magnificent specimen, go to this site I stumbled on couple of yrs ago after seeing the short video by cf1970 of Storm Cat Romping in His Paddock. Google - type in studslife Storm Cat and read the excerpt by Kevin Conley fm 2002 when he visited Overbrook Farm. You'll LOVE it !! Wonderful stuff and esp comments by the vet and farm owner re. Storm Cat ! Actually think he's not doing study duty anymore, think I read he's retired.
I own TA PEPSI SPECIAL A Storm cat decendent. She *Pepsi* Is Coming four... keep your eyes open for her and her best buddy Qualita Creek *MEA* comin 8. Both Special effort lines Pepsi has Storm cat lines. Pepsi is a pup and always wants in the middle of everything.. smooth as a 3 year old to ride ( just 3 months on). I will begin more riding come the 2012 season... Take my time.... she will be a hell ofa barrel horse.
Did you see the fluid on his right knee? It was collecting there. He's getting older and sometimes horses do collect fluid like an old man or woman will on their knees. But no, it's not cruel but, you do have to be careful around studs. There was a woman in the Uk who is a trainer and one of her studs grabbed her by the throat and tore her voice box out! She can't speak again.
IF they're breeding, their weight can go up sometimes to 1200 or more pounds and that's alot of horse to handle.
I don't think he's shanking Storm Cat, he's tugging the chain to keep his attention and keep him from getting any ideas. Given his rep of being a mean S.O.B., they are being cautious. They warn the guy of him kicking in the video, and he's trying to gnaw on his handler--he's not a lamb.
@bladeofbattousai your comments on Storm Cat have me chuckling.... and "he's not a lamb." when I first learned of him saw 15 sec by cf1970 here and couple of yrs ago googled Storm Cat and found a webpage called studslife. Google that and Storm Cat and there's an excerpt by a Kevin Conley, you'll enjoy it and it'll make you smile as they talk about SC at Overbrook Farm and his life as a stud.
All these folks that talk like they know Horses, that "yanking" on the chain? The little shack of the chain as you call it would be like someone hitting you with a Feather. It does keep his mind occupied and people that have dealt with Storm Cats know that many are more then a handful to handle. If you want a PET people buy a Poodle, this is Livestock.
Omg people the handler is not hurting him with that chain. It is wrapped around his halter wich reduces the bite of the chain. He is simply trying to get his attention and let the horse know who is the boss.
Storm Cat was VERY aggressive. He is reaching around to bite his handeler when the chain is still. The handler is giving him small corrections repeatedly to say i'm the boss. From wht i have heard this horse was one mean son of a bitch genetically. The kind of horse who needs to be left to be a horse not paraded.
@TheBeautyonHorseback I disagree. He was not an aggressive horse, only in races which was more physiologically that physically He ran aggressively to win. Ye she got small corrections as he is a stud, tis what they do, Secretariat was like that too, he has perfect ground manners.
A little more gentle with the chain would of been nice to see. This horse watched everyone around him - he was being as good as it gets. Trainer on the other hand - not sure about.
I can't figure out why Storm Cat isn't on the chef-de-race list? They just put A.P. Indy on it; but, not this guy who is a sire of sires. Just look in the stallion register book.
The handler isn't being rough with Storm Cat, these stallions are mean and can change personalities in the blink of an eye. Nothing unusual in this video. The handler knows he's holding onto a gold mine. Did Storm Cat have any kids that weren't successful? I can't think of any off the top of my head. Possibly the greatest sire of all time, Alydar is a close 2nd.
maybe if you would get people that know how to handle a horse the horses wouldnt be so bad. i really hope he takes a chunk out of his handler i would if i was him.
Normally, studs like Storm Cat get very uptight and tempermental from their "job". And being brought out before a crowd of strange people can be very confusing for any horse. He might be calm at one point, but then he could lash out at someone at the drop of a dime. The groom there is keeping him distracted to prevent such a thing from happening.
@kcaj789 he is still at overbrook, the farm shut down and sold most of the stock because w.t. young's kids and grand kids wanted out of the biz. ut the family still owns the farm. in fact the gready young family now stand storm cat as quater horse sire. mr.young is rolling over in his grave.
I currently ride a storm cat baby and he's pretty tough. Beautiful though, he definitly has Storm Cats body type exactly now that I see it. Not the color though.
Storm Cat does have a hateful streak.I used to work there and handled him daily and know how bad he can be.His babies are just as tough. He's gotten worse as he's gotten older too.I will have to say he is a good sire though and his babies could run.Funny they couldn't fill his stud book his first year for $2,500 they gave seasons away to get mares to him.His dam still looks great for her age.Amazing mare she is.Still incredibly beautiful.Just sad soon the farm will be gone...
His dam Terlingua was put down April of 1008 I think, infirmities of old age. God she was wonderful. There's a video of her by cf1970 here, you should watch it.
you are correct about that. I just hope her grave is not disturbed when they start selling off the farm. It is a beautiful place. I am curious though there is a lady that used to live in the middle of the land that wasn't owned by overbrook. She was supposed to have residence as long as she lived. I just wonder if she is still able to live there....
Actually, Storm Cat's worth more. Your 350k euros comes only to $492,749. 5429 in US. And this 500k is just his breeding fee with a guaranteed pregnancy, not his overall worth. Sorry dude.
oh sorry he fall short a couple thousand dollers and 350k euro was much more than 500k dollers when i posted that comment the euro goes up and down much like the doller that is strong at the minute
Also, stallions breed and protect the herd in the wild, but the leadership role is held by the lead or "boss" mare. It is she who says where to go, when to go, and how to get there. A handler must be that lead mare! It is not a stallion's place to lead, and when he is allowed that role, he will become tense and insecure and dangerous.
Stallions often acquire the habit of nipping/biting at the handler. In order to keep his attention/mouth occupied a handler shakes the chain often, never let his attention wander off. Hand-walking and turn-out can be more complicated with stallions, due to fact they're studs, remember that a stallion is a herd animal who relies heavily on instinct and can become unpredictable or aggressive at any time. It can be unsafe for an inexperienced person to a stud horse.
my horse is his grandson too and my horse doesn't nip and bite. its a "stallion thing." they can be extremely mouthy. and the handler is doing his job just fine, considering that Storm Cat is a stallion and they can be very dangerous. I've worked with stallions before and you definitely need to keep their attention. its also important to keep their heads straight, because they can turn around and bite pretty quick.
Thats cool! My horse is a 7 year old gelding, I guess he was never taught not to do that when he was younger lol. I also have a 2 year old stallion that will be gelded next month. He had the nipping problem for a short time but he stopped by himself (I guess he was teething). I haven't really had any problems with him though, he is really easy to handle, I've had him since 2 days old cause his mother was a nurse mare & he was taken away from her after the first 24 hours, hes got more manners lol
thats stupid how can you say that Americans dont have good races..have you ever heard of the Kentucky Derby..only one of the most famous horse races in the world..get your head out of your ass..even Sheikh Mohammed ,the ruler of Dubai ,one of the richest countries in the world ,is investing in the Derby what does that tell you?
i own his grandson cat chief son of catthief arrr i bough him in as orry state from a dealer the vet came to jab him and we found out he was american born our chief we imediatly traced him back and found out his uncle was giants cause way and nijinski but chief he hated running he could not see the point he wanted to eat the grass he died of heart atack on the 6/5/08 only six R.I.P KENTUCKY CHIEF I MISS YOU
I love his little attempts at nipping. When I worked on a thoroughbred breeding farm we had a stallion like that. It was always "I'll bite you, I will, I swear." And when he couldn't he would just stand there and sulk, bottom lip hanging and everything. It was too cute.
yeah, he ran second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in 1985; won the now-defunct GI Young America S. that year, too. was an okay race horse, but certainly nothing that would indicate would sort of sire he would become.
his back is like that i think more from age than anything else.he doesn't have the "classic" thoroughbred look,he's also built a little more like a sprinter than anything, you can see it with his thick neck and huge hindquarters and his chest is really thick too. he's my horse's grandsire and they look very similar, but jazz's back isn't deep like that, but as he gets old, i'm sure i'll see some changes
They just lowered Storm Cat's stud fee to $300,000 for 2008. Distorted Humour and AP Indy also have that same fee so he is no longer the most expensive sire. He is getting up there in years but still producing nice foals.
Yes, he is what, 23 now? You hate to think that we have to lose them... maybe he'll live as long as his Mama, I'd love to see video of her. There's a good picture of her on pedigreequery dotcom
I think the young man in the blue jacket is kinda pushy with the great Storm Cat. You can see Storm Cat is being polite, but that guy isn't showin' the respect to this beautiful boy! Not giving Storm the space he needs!
@goldenbear1950 - I couldn't agree with you more. Excessively yanking on the stud chain for no reason. He already KNOWS it's there and is standing quiet. He doesn't need to yank on it and push his neck away. He is already respecting his space. I have a TB, ex-racer from the track who thinks he is still a stud but knows when he can play up and when he can't.
@MUSICSOULCHICK The guy acts like he's afraid of the horse. People who are comfortable around horses don't have to do that sort of thing. So unnecessary.
@kwmred I work with these horses DAILY here in Los Angeles. Having the stud chain over his nose is HOW they handle TB stallions, anywhere u go. He is walking him fine, close to his shoulder & when he starts to get nippy or won't stand still, he is pushing his face away & checking him w/ the stud chain letting him know it's not ok, & gets him refocused 2 stand still. They do not hire people at these farms unless they are comfortable with TB's, even the mares.
@MUSICSOULCHICK I've seen other stallions that have to be handled like this. especially if the handler is just standing around talking to other people. Yes, he's being calm and paying attention to his handler, but he could just as easily try to take off, or bite or kick out. It's not a case of being mean, but rather just getting bored. Note how the handler says that they usually pasture-breed him because he gets too wound up just standing still waiting for the mare to be ready for him.
narrator said he's efficient. that's what Penny Chenery said about Secretariat, just goes in, makes it easy, one cover... I had to chuckle.. still Mr. Calm, nothing bothered him.
DId you hear Penny talk about how her fave was Riva more than Sec...because Sec was just a pure "HAM" and didn't need any one to talk about him...he made SURE he was seen....LOL
Yes, I did. I think though, I read in new book The Horse God Built: "It's not that I don't love Secretariat, I do, it's just that I'm in AWE of him, his power, speed, his beauty." Also reason Riva was in her heart was her father, when R won KD she called hospital and nurse told him (was watching) and tears in his eyes. Riva initially saved Meadow financially.
I did hear that about RIva saving Meadow...did you see that they are developing Meadow Farms in VA...if you go to website with the photographer...Livingston she has pics of the stall where Sec was born...
Yes, I did, like her site. It's sad that farm will be lost. Think read original home her father rebuilt was also taken down. Not even sure his foaling shed will be kept. It's not much but it was his. Also read in sec dot com Q&A w/PC that Somethingroyal is buried there, so there must be some part saved.
Mare Haven Farm is now CASA Farm. A Dr. William Reed who was a vet surgeon, one who attempted to save Ruffian, owned the place until he passed in 2003. Audrey, his wife, sold the place in 2004 and Secrettame, was allowed to live her life out there...Her last breeding was in 2004 to Thunder Gulch, but it was not successful. She was pensioned and died in 2006. Mare Haven is in Lexington. It is 255 acres.
there's no golden red in his coat. he is a bay/dark brown. most bay/brown horses have the lighter color around their nose. Storm Cat is my horse's grandpa, and they really look so similar. My horse actually resembles Storm Cat more than his sire.
I was quoting fm excerpt on studslife dot com, 3rd para fm bottom, He's a dark bay but when he moves in the sunlight you can pick up flashes of a honey-gold color that comes fm the chestnut horses on his mother's side... I know he's a dark bay, I've been watching him romp in his paddock on the video for months.
God, How beautiful he is...It is nice to hear that Terlingua is still a handful....and that she still is around...there are not many true children of Secretariat left...I know that Terlingua, Navajo Pass, are at Overbrook but his other daughter Secrettame just passed away last year.
If you look at Gone West and Storm Cat with Secretariat you can see granddaddy in both of them...
We own one of Storm Cat's grandsons.

susanfromhauntspace 3 years ago

i didn't have a clue f how old this horse was!
geez, yourself!
bellabelliboo 3 years ago
you really should do a little research before you comment so harshly. it made you look quite ignorant.
susanfromhauntspace 3 years ago

This comment has received too many negative votes show
he nice but i actually think he's badly built.
his back is too deep
bellabelliboo 4 years ago
his back is like that i think more from age than anything else.he doesn't have the "classic" thoroughbred look,he's also built a little more like a sprinter than anything, you can see it with his thick neck and huge hindquarters and his chest is really thick too. he's my horse's grandsire and they look very similar, but jazz's back isn't deep like that, but as he gets old, i'm sure i'll see some changes
eventerjazz6 4 years ago
I agree with you, that it is more from age. He was born in 1983, so he is getting up there in years.

he's the grandpa of my horse, sleepy cat.... but sleepy doesn't look like him.....

He's 24.

He looks like his grandpa....

He's so headstrong! The great Stormcat.
ISBAILEYDEADYET 4 years ago
He is just gorgeous. He's got that thick, powerful neck. Love to see him nip at his groom as if to say, "back off, Jack!!" Very funny to watch.
LadyKat964 4 years ago
I think the young man in the blue jacket is kinda pushy with the great Storm Cat. You can see Storm Cat is being polite, but that guy isn't showin' the respect to this beautiful boy! Not giving Storm the space he needs!

Marco is a great groom...trust me he knows what is going on.
apachemountain 2 years ago
@goldenbear1950 - I couldn't agree with you more. Excessively yanking on the stud chain for no reason. He already KNOWS it's there and is standing quiet. He doesn't need to yank on it and push his neck away. He is already respecting his space. I have a TB, ex-racer from the track who thinks he is still a stud but knows when he can play up and when he can't.

@MUSICSOULCHICK The guy acts like he's afraid of the horse. People who are comfortable around horses don't have to do that sort of thing. So unnecessary.
kwmred 1 year ago
@kwmred I work with these horses DAILY here in Los Angeles. Having the stud chain over his nose is HOW they handle TB stallions, anywhere u go. He is walking him fine, close to his shoulder & when he starts to get nippy or won't stand still, he is pushing his face away & checking him w/ the stud chain letting him know it's not ok, & gets him refocused 2 stand still. They do not hire people at these farms unless they are comfortable with TB's, even the mares.
MUSICSOULCHICK 1 year ago 3
@MUSICSOULCHICK I've seen other stallions that have to be handled like this. especially if the handler is just standing around talking to other people. Yes, he's being calm and paying attention to his handler, but he could just as easily try to take off, or bite or kick out. It's not a case of being mean, but rather just getting bored. Note how the handler says that they usually pasture-breed him because he gets too wound up just standing still waiting for the mare to be ready for him.

Nice breed of Horse, also helps the industry of horse racing in different Country.Expensive but worth.
siehd07 4 years ago
so uh...WHY is he so expensive? and horse shave been sold for more than 500k.
rooroogirl 4 years ago
narrator said he's efficient. that's what Penny Chenery said about Secretariat, just goes in, makes it easy, one cover... I had to chuckle.. still Mr. Calm, nothing bothered him.
bon1042 4 years ago
Hey Bon,
DId you hear Penny talk about how her fave was Riva more than Sec...because Sec was just a pure "HAM" and didn't need any one to talk about him...he made SURE he was seen....LOL
shellpen10 4 years ago
Riva initially saved Meadow financially.
bon1042 4 years ago
I did hear that about RIva saving Meadow...did you see that they are developing Meadow Farms in VA...if you go to website with the photographer...Livingston she has pics of the stall where Sec was born...
shellpen10 4 years ago
Yes, I did, like her site. It's sad that farm will be lost. Think read original home her father rebuilt was also taken down. Not even sure his foaling shed will be kept. It's not much but it was his. Also read in sec dot com Q&A w/PC that Somethingroyal is buried there, so there must be some part saved.
bon1042 4 years ago
This kind of thing makes me very sad...what doesn't someone step in and DO SOMETHING>>>>>>

Secrettame died last year on St Paddy's day and she is buried at Mare Haven farm...
shellpen10 4 years ago
Where is Mare Haven farm?
bon1042 4 years ago
Sorry Bon,
Had to go to bed,
Mare Haven Farm is now CASA Farm.

My horse actually resembles Storm Cat more than his sire.
eventerjazz6 4 years ago
you mean his dam
orsetto81utube 4 years ago
no, storm cat is my horses grandpa. henessey is my horse's sire. i have not seen pictures of my horse's dam, so I don't know how similar they look.
eventerjazz6 4 years ago
I was quoting fm excerpt on studslife dot com, 3rd para fm bottom, He's a dark bay but when he moves in the sunlight you can pick up flashes of a honey-gold color that comes fm the chestnut horses on his mother's side... I know he's a dark bay, I've been watching him romp in his paddock on the video for months.
bon1042 4 years ago
A whole lotta horse, you can see the goldish red in his coat, fm Terlingua and her daddy. What's the chance of seeing some video of Terlingua??
bon1042 4 years ago
God, How beautiful he is...It is nice to hear that Terlingua is still a handful....and that she still is around...there are not many true children of Secretariat left...I know that Terlingua, Navajo Pass, are at Overbrook but his other daughter Secrettame just passed away last year.
If you look at Gone West and Storm Cat with Secretariat you can see granddaddy in both of them...
