  • Why is this not on the Main Event CD?! I have the Highlights, and i want him to be singing this song! ><

  • I gotta say, Warlow nails the big note better than any other Phantom.

  • Best Phantom ever!!!

  • Awesome please watch my version

  • I personally never really understood the obsession with Michael Crawford. Yes the man is very talented, but to me, no one will ever have the passion, the power and the tone of The Great Anthony Warlow. The man not only has a gift, he IS a gift to us all. God bless you Anthony, you are an amazing talent and ur voice never fails to move me. Forever MY favorite Phantom.

  • @metalschmo I agree. There is a tendency to accept the original as the ONLY Phantom, Valjean or whatever. If no one came along who were better (or different) the world would be a very impoverished place to live. I've never been fan of neither Crawford nor Wilkinson. But again I'm coloured by the singers I first heard in those roles and the same goes for everyone else.

  • @metalschmo Totally agree with you! I love listening to Anthony Warlow, pure joy! Love him! :-)

  • agree with masterboffin23

  • my god, is he crying at the end of this video? most amazing voice in the world

  • @masterboffin23 dont know. but i was

  • This is my guilty pleasure... >_> People know me for listening to heavy metal, if they knew I was on this video, oh lord...

  • @Zildjian669 Theres nothing shameful about listening to true music with lyrics that tell a story. I respect heavy metal as a genre but I respect you much more even listening to Andrew Lloyd Webbers greats. I get that too. I understand what you mean when I mention Greats like Colm Wilkinson, Ramin Karimloo, John Owen Jones, Alfie boe to my friends, they frown upon me. and redicule me. Its alright be brave. They are just jealous that you are listening to someone more talented than their idols!

  • Another Australian treasure we will ALWAYS be proud of :)

  • Apart from Crawford's, this is by far and away the best I've ever heard. He sings it perfectly.

  • just watched love never dies today... was good, but phantom beats anthony warlow's, his voice is amazing, never fails to give me goosebumps

  • I saw both Anthony Warlow and Rob Guest play the Phantom in Melbourne and loved the show both times even with the understudy to Marina Prior playing Christine. My CD features Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman and I love it. My DVD features Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum and I love it too. To try and compare individuals is silly. It's the same as seeing only the trees and not the forest.

  • Amazing... goose bumps...

  • This is so beautiful, it nearly made me burst into tears. Anthony is such a special man and hearing him reprise his role as Phantom is just heart-breakingly lovely.

Society owes such a debt to amazing artists like Ant, Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, Michael Ball and of course Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber. They are what MAKE civillised, cultured society.

  • AGREE who could not ? with dabermamator

  • 1:37 = heaven.

  • Anyone know what concert this performance was from?

  • Wow. John Owen-Jones is still my favorite, but this guy is awesome.

  • the expression change at 1:43 always makes me giggle lol he's amazing though.

  • ramin karimloo, john owen jones, michael crawford, john cudia and anthony warlow

best phantoms of all time. :)

  • He has a nice voice, but he seemed a little showy :-/

  • @bvolcano723 only because this was for a show with john farnham and olivia newton john :) i saw him live, and he was much more business then

  • His lower register is amazing! I'm a tenor and i love singing this song, but the lower Ab in "time" of Nighttime is hard to resonate, but Warlow does it with ease. Bravo! :D

  • @JAyala7293 I'm the complete opposite of you, my friend. I'm a bass, so the lower Ab's are always easier for me. It's the high Ab on "BE" that's a struggle for me. Haha

  • @JAyala7293 Cause Warlow is a barritone ^^

  • @mennoace

    actually he is a Tenor/Barritone

  • @MissSkylark131 it's Baritone, with just one "R" :)

  • @JAyala7293 Brava! Gerry is good too!

  • Can we be sure Anthony didn't change his name to Warlow from Warlock? He's magical. Reminds me of Voldemort, if he'd found music before he went all snakey.

  • JOJ, Warlow, Wilkinson, Crawford, and Karimloo are THE best. No one can argue that.

Though for my money it's tied between Crawford and Jones

  • Truely a pleasure to listen to this" GIFT" from Anthony. Would realy like to see them make a Highlights CD.

  • I have seen a few phnatoms but i still love warlow :)

  • ramin karimloo = best phantom in LND. no one can argue that lol

  • @jive0in thats very narrow minded of u, do u know exactly how many phantoms there have been ?

  • @AddsMusical I think they meant in Love Never Dies, but only he and a few others have actually portrayed the Phantom in it.

  • @jive0in but then again i kind of agree, him and John Owen jones yeah!!

  • Brilliant...

  • Warlow>Crawford

  • Wow!!! That was simply.AMAZING!

  • best music of the night ever....

  • I've heard my share of Phantoms, and Warlow is definitely AMAZING! What a voice!

  • The best Music of the Night since I ever heard for almost four decades..

  • wow warlow's so gifted. nobody seems to have heard of him here in UK . their loss !

  • Warlow = as good at singing as the Phantom should be

Butler = as angry as the Phantom should be

Crawford = as classy as the Phantom should be

  • NEVER EVER MENTION BUTLER IN THE SAME BREATH AS WARLOW, CRAWFORD OR WILKINSON. NEVER. EVER. e v e r ---- EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

  • @dabermanator I concur: Partially - Crawford's still pretty damn good XDXD

But yes, Warlow's freaking amazing *dies* XD

  • @dabermanator

damn straight, i just replied to someone's citing butler as a good phantom, and i compared him to a bitch when put up against warlow and crawford :D

  • @dabermanator Why? Gerry Butler is pretty good. I think better than this this version. The movie is different to the stage show. He gives a dimension the stage plat can't portray. Both are tops in their field. I like the movie better, because I'm younger. I'm only 70 and I think Butler is hot too!

  • Anthony Warlow is amazing!

  • Warlow makes love to the audience through his voice.

  • @asmallworld09 True! ;-)

  • Butler is the sexiest. Crawford was the first and therefor historic. Warlow has the best voice.

  • Warlow is amazing!! No, I don't mean as the Phantom, I mean in general! All his Jekyll and Hyde songs and such, amazing!!

  • FRED JOHANSON sings music of the night (and has played phantom) much better then this.

Sorry for caps but you really need to her Fred sing Music of the Night no jumping in his tone like this

  • God, I love how he performs songs! He acts with his body and voice. He put a hint of musical madman in his performance, which is how it should be for the Phantom. (Don't get me wrong, it's great as a romantic fluff song, but I like those moments of possible crazy. XD )

  • i think it's hard to get this song completely, utterly, perfectly right without Christine being there...love and lust is hardly a one-man show.

  • Yep. Ben Lewis (the current Phantom for Australia's "Love Never Dies") really echoes Warlow's Phantom which is absolutely fitting for the new show! The baritone works so well.

  • I'm a 37 year-old English singer living in Galway, Ireland. I'm working hard on my singing and would very much appreciate any honest critical feedback from real Phantom fans on my version of Music of the Night here on Youtube to help me improve. (Just type my name.) It was recorded a while ago now, and every singer must think they can do better later on, but there it is. Thank you very much for any feedback offered. Andrew Hawcroft. (A devout Artist Against Autotune)

  • gerard butler sucks.

  • He is seriously the BEST male vocalist in the entire world! No one compares to him. LOVE HIM!!!!!!!

  • how can anyone dislike this? Seriously? One of the purest voices ever to be heard, such a talent, sends shivers down my spine every time

  • @ttnkn10090 It was all pure gold. =P My favorite part was the end.

  • Each of the Phantom are the best in their category .... I love them all, but there is something about Anthony Warlow that makes it perfect! His vocal is so good, his facial expression and you can always understand the words of the song ... he communicates it well.

  • Stunning. I love this man! And I like his hand motions, it's better than him just standing there like a statue the whole time as some singers do.

  • @ttnkn10090 Heck yeah! I mean, it was all pure gold. I kid you not, I have watched this guy for the first time tonight and I know for certain that it has changed my life!

  • Don't you wish we still had singers like this in main stream music?

  • Really - Warlow is both a better actor and singer than Butler, PLUS he is far more attractive!

  • Am I the only one who thinks hes a tad too over the top? Fantastic voice but, wow, tone it down a bit would you?

  • @generosos87 it's called theatricality.

  • Why is he living on the other side of the world? amazing voice, thank god for CD's.

  • Anthony Warlow you are a BLOODY BRILLANT phantom you have an amazing voice

  • I mean, wow... now, I think of the book, I can hear his voice...

  • Gawd, this is singing!

  • Breathtaking. Vibrant. Engaging. Enchanting. Moving!

  • That high note was remarkable.

His hand gestures seem a bit much, but if people are watching him from that far back they'll need them like that to see them, and you can only do so much standing in the same spot when singing

  • my gosh,

his falsetto gave me chills... !!

  • Personally, this is my favorite MOTN performance ever!

  • Saw him in Perth's production...absolutely magnificent!

  • omg... I shivvered and cried and... omg That was an amazing preformance. The tonality, the phrasing, even the way he acented words and his alliteration... Amazing..

  • Woow, I heard more Phantoms, but I think more singing=better one, so like this very much :)!

  • I saw him in Phantom in Brisbane, and in Pirates of Penzance in Sydney, I love the way he captures the audience every time.

  • He's wonderful. What a great singer!

  • i feel as if David Gaschin is the best phantom...he has played the phantom more times than anyone in the word...highly doubt some people have seen him on brodway..they just watch the movie and say they get the same feeling...TOTALLY not true!!!

  • bravo

  • i fear that C#...

  • @blutsklave eh? the high note is an A flat, it that what you meant?

  • @JohnHowardHenry well, originally, the high note is meant to be a D flat :P

  • @JohnHowardHenry I think he's talking about the long note at the end. Not the epic one in the middle.

Personally he's my favourite Phantom. GO AUSTRALIA!!

  • 13 people don't even know what beautiful music is.

  • My god, he's so emotional. It's amazing!

  • This may come off as weird, but Anthony has amazing hands...I can just sit here and watch them for hours. xD

  • I often forget we have one of the best tenors in the world right here in Aus

  • Warlow and Crawford are fantastic. And when I first saw the film version with Gerard Butler I wasn't sure what to expect but he blew me away too. Definitely my favorite musical film of recent times.

  • I have never heard and seen a man to be as sensual as this. Thank you Anthony!

  • Yes.

  • I think Butler, Warlow and Crawford are all good in their own rights. I do enjoy Warlow's vocal performance the most though.

  • I like all three....Gerard,Crawford and Warlow. I think Crawford has the best emotion on this song. Warlow has the best power and Gerard the acting lol

  • Anthony is the only one who can perform this song without changing the timbre of his voice throughout his range. Truly, he's a masterful performer.

  • @TheClindoeil yea I know Crawford's voice wasn't so great. It seemed kinda girlish to me. I like the deeper baritone voices personally.

  • I never understood why my partner gave up playing a musical instument because he couldn't play it as well as his idol.

I do now.....how could I ever sing so brilliantly and with such passion.

    Thank you Maestro!

  • Love his tone, but I don't love the liberties he takes with the phrasing.

To each their own though, obviously. The man is a BEAST either way.

  • how do I find the video of this? I must own it!

  • I luv his voice, but he shouldnt have stopped. He should be in Phantom for real.

  • Gerry was the first Phantom I ever saw, so I'll always have a soft spot for him. I think his rock style voice suited Phantom & Point of No Return better than this song. In terms of characterisation, I think he did a decent job in the movie, especially for someone who's not a musical theatre actor.

But Anthony....just....wow. I'm an Aussie so I'm probably somewhat biased, but I've never heard AW give a bad performance. I just adore his voice...it's so smooth and beautiful and clear

  • finally a good version of music of the night

Crawford is great, but i don't like his version much

and Gerard Butler... well... just terrible...

  • best ever phantom anthony no doubt

  • best ever

  • best ever

  • This is a bit low for me, but it's so well-sung that it makes up for it. His hands are cool :] the only thing is that he clipped (and spoke...) some words.

  • @MagicklessSorceress low? this isn't low. this is the original key. the difference is warlow actually hits the low Ab, AND he hits the High Ab

  • @thainlimb1 XD I meant for *me* to sing to- it's a bit low for me to hit all the notes when I sing (to myself). He IS amazingly great though.

  • @MagicklessSorceress oic ok :)

  • His hands are weaving their own kind of artistry!

  • Anthony Warlow has an incredible voice, but I think for this performance to be called "brilliant," he could have let some of his phrases linger for a bit longer. The tempo seems rushed at times.

  • Yes, "bravo" to you Mr Anthony Warlow.....

your voice sends shivers through me... my only regret is, that i never experienced you performing PHANTOM OF THE OPERA live...

  • We can argue 'til the cows come home who's the best Phantom. It's like debating who's the best Hamlet. We should be thankful to have such a wealth of talent to choose from. Give Crawford credit for lauching the ship and the others for keeping it afloat for decades. As long as the show continues to attract this caliber of talent, it will never end. That said, I'd like to hear each of them do a Phantom highlights CD so we feel like kids in a candy shop.

  • @audiesgirl

Let's not forget Colm Wilkenson. After all, it wasn't Crawford who was supposed to originate the role, but Colm. Colm was Lloyd Webber's first choice. In fact, he did the original "pilots" on stage but when it came to recording it and debuting it on the West End Colm had other previously arranged commitments and couldn't continue. Crawford was brought in as a replacement and then became the star. That show would have made anyone a star.

  • @aarontenor I didn't know CW was slated for the role but I did watch The Making Of the POTO where's he's in the first public showing. I got the Canadian OCR to hear his rendition and I still prefer Warlow and Crawford. There's something about CW that annoys as Phantom me although I like him in Les Mis. It's funny how Cameron MacIntosh told Crawford the part was not a star vehicle. Was he ever wrong! It's just too bad Crawford didn't get to do the movie or he'd have locked down the role.

  • @audiesgirl and colm for doing the concept...

  • Just the use of his gorgeous hands with his musical insturment - such a voice!!

  • When it comes to technical ability and passion, Warlow holds the high card in just about everything he's performed. My opinion, of course. As far as Crawford goes, I appreciate his originality but can't get past his 'It Only Takes a Moment' in 'Hello Dolly'...the Joe Cocker hand movements kill me. LOL

  • Anthony warlow is in a league of his own. His voice in Phantom of the Opera absolutely blew me away, he commanded the whole stage and audience. every time he was on the stage he became the focus, every time he sang he was unmatched and made everyone else seem tiny.

He is one very, very talented man and I cannot wait to see him in Doctor Zhivago!

  • I hate it when people complain about Crawford and his "nasally" voice, as certain people put it. Yes, Warlow is incredible, and Crawford could have been better, but he set the stage for all future Phantoms. I could pick a dozen examples of words/lines Warlow used in this song that are purely Michael's creation. I have yet to hear a Phantom besides Gerard Butler who has not used Michael's technique and expressive phrasing.

    Politley critique, not criticize.

  • Gerard Butler was nothing compared to Anthony Warlow, but I do NOT like how Michael Crawford performed it. I'm sorry, but his voice is nasally and very whining. But in this version, I feel that Warlow did not listen to the dynamics of the song at ALL. And he spoke too many parts. Sorry, just my opinion.

  • Andrew Lloyd Webber's plagiarised Puccini!

  • I have heard many sing this song...but none better

  • Not enough passion but great voice.

  • @Jonablo29 I believe you are on drugs.

  • I had the priveliege (?) to see this man live, omfg, i didnt appreciate it then but now... after listening to the shitty pop music of current, this man puts everyone in the industry to shame, esp. fucking kesha, Gaga etc.

  • superb!

  • Spell-binding performance.

  • I think Anthony Warlow gives a far superior performance to Micheal Crawford. He has such warm resonance and beautiful tone, without any of the unnecessary ping of Crawford's voice.

  • Simply the greatest ever.

  • What a showman - the music really suits the voice. His technique is great too!

  • Beautiful voice and wonderful voice but what the hell is he doing with his hands? It is a little distracting

  • I've heard Anthonhy live as the Phantom; he's very good. He's a different Phantom to Michael Crawford and you know what, they both portray THEIR (and their director's) Phantom superbly.

And if I were asked which of the two would sing this song to me when I died, I'd say I WANT THEM BOTH TO.

  • just because someone did something first, doesn't make it best. a case in point is the comparison between the power girds in the US and Europe. the same is true in vocal performance, and is true here. i find this performance is more nuanced, honest and ultimately more pleasing than Crawford's adaptation.

  • yeah aussie, you are my one and only phantom :)

  • WONDERFUL!!!

  • I like this guy better than Michael Crawford...

  • In my opinion he is not pouring his soul into enough this is a very passionate song and this is too structured for me. All I have heard on this vid is the bashing of MC although critically he is the best and in my opinion this mans vocals have nothing on Michael. I will most likely being getting hate mail but that is ok with me.

  • Is it just me, or does he sound like his Edward Hyde around 1:59 ?

  • @kanaplz he was one of the first hydes. He was on the concept album

  • Crawford is most certainly too nasal in his vocal production, which annoys me a bit, but of course, who am I to say I'm any better? I feel like Warlow's warmth suits the song better.

  • i will say that his falsetto "soar" note was better.

  • Besides the obvious fact that his voice is absolutely amazing - he is also a great storyteller. I follow him moment to moment like I'm hearing it for the first time. I reeeaaally appreciate that fact. Many phantoms take the song for granted. It's such a well known song - too many Phantoms go through the motions of it instead of holding on to each moment and sincerely feeling it. Anthony gives new life to this beautiful song and performs it how it was meant to be performed. Bravo!:)

  • can you watch my video Gino sings music of the night and give me feedback

  • his little sniffle at 4:29 and i start crying lol

  • I just got done playing Hitman: Blood Money, so this video is kind of a trip for me.

  • My SECOND favorite rendition. I personally prefer Colm Wilkinson, who has a similar range and sound, but this is a VERY close second. The only reason I would rate Wilkinson about Warlow is the very final note: whereas Warlow keeps the same note, Wilkinson has a climb at the very end that is absolutely beautiful. Anthony Warlow is still one of the greatest singers of this age though. =)

  • Warlow and Wilkinson are the best. Hands down.

  • @AmyBryans true that

  • I love him.

  • I've been listening to the Main Event recordings since 1998, and this performance still gives me the same chills it did the first time. Wow!

  • Finally a phantom I can listen to without cringeing. Michael Crawford had the training but not the warmth. Gerard Butler had the warmth but not the training. but this guy is amazing!

  • he's a legend

  • I like his voice and range but I don't particularly like the dramatisism in the hand gestures and some of the phrasing on the words. Other than that it was good

  • I've heard some versions of this song ..and this one is after my opinion the best because he sings the song with so much passion and he also has a very strong and good voice. Sometimes he is even for me a bit too dramatic but it somehow fits to the song XD

  • i watched the phantom of the opera in australia in 2007 when he was the phantom. i also watched him in annie when i was really young

  • Oh my..I love this guy! Third on my List. I really ADORE the way he sings this here. Breathtaking.

  • oh gads, this guy is by far amazing! i have listened to all the performances, and this guy takes top flight! love his voice, bring him home is awesome too!

  • A wonderful rendition all around, I'd have loved to see him as the Phantom. But there were a few things I didn't like... The absence of the pauses after "soar" and the big "be". There is so much loaded into those two silent moments, and I really missed them here because I think they would have been awesome. I also didn't really like the way he said the short lines such as "softly, deftly" or "hear it, feel it"; too harsh. But the sheer power of the beginning verses and the lower notes was great.

  • I agree seen him live as the phantom in Qpac in Brisbane quite enjoyed it would see him perform again . Seen to have more passion and gapes for the phantom role . Michael still has the vote as well but I dint get to see him in the production was quite young then .

  • Well this is wonderful brilliant really, But I still need to see and hear Michael do this part. I was privlaged to see this live and well, Michael Crawford is the only Phantom for both my wife and myself. Such a wonderful voice and passion Anthony puts to the music of the night. I would buy two tickets to see him for sure!!!!!! thanks for the post.

  • I love Anthony Warlow, he is excellent on this song. However, Crawford still has the edge for me.

  • frig my chest just tightens when he sings this. so powerful and...ugh. hah

  • Sends shivers down the spine!
