  • My life by layne. you are the man. long live layne in death. Layne and Kurt are making sweet music in heaven right now. Sad part is we wont hear it till we get there.

  • This song is fucking amazing.

  • I'm just glad this song brings so much out of so many, when most of the country is living like zombies, music brings shit all into perspective. Peace.

  • I am not an addict and the "pain is self chosen can perhaps be attributed to relationships with people one loves who have nowhere near the same feelings for you but when you realize it is really painful in and of itself, because you chose those people and stuck in there without realizing you were wasting your time"

  • @carlrball It's most definitely about drug addiction, have you heard the whole album? Music is great for that reason though, you can take what you want from it, especially when the lyrics are as poetic as Layne's.

  • As a recovering alcoholic/addict the words "my pain is self chosen" is a reminder of the hell that my life and many others have become. This song helps keep me clean and thats all I can ask for today!

  • Love ya Layne....you are an inspiration as always. Miss you.

  • Thanks Layne. RIP

  • Layne was an amazing man taken from this world all too young I'm coming up on three months clean and I was listening to this song for the first time sober while reading up on his last years alive and broke down in tears nobody wants to be an addict and at his end he wasn't doing drugs to get high he didn't want to be dope sick so sad he couldn't beat that devil of an addiction

R.I.P. Layne You're memory will always stay alive and I'm a fan who will always love you and thanks for what you gave me

  • @Brutalyeah, That may be what he is saying, but i take it as, everybody's life is what they make it....you can continue that path of self-destruction, or decide to make yourself a better person!!

  • ''My pain is self-chosen''.

It hurts me to hear that from him. He blamed himself for his addiction...

No wonder he never got out of it. He didn't deserve this. No one does.

Thanks for everything, pal. You made my life better.

  • One of the best songs i've ever heard to this day. Really hits me hard on the inside. Gives you one of those spine tingling feelings soon as he breaks into chorus. Just beautiful. This and down in a hole are a gift to us. Appreciate that. This man lived as an addict and an inspiration but died a legend. I give major props to this man. April 5 2002 a big part of music died that day. R.I.P. Layne and keep rockin wherever you are. A.I.C. fan!!!

  • @AnmilaOnMillrush You're an ass. Why even comment if your just going to piss all over a good point. Eat my ass.......ass!

  • Why is Rihanna, whoever the fuck that is, being advertised around a Mad Season video. WTF get out of here.

  • And today, our featured videos to the right are Jesse J.,Tinie Tempah,Pink and Avril Lavigne with a bottom board for Rihanna.......Tell me where is sanity?...

  • @Anaris10

I understand your point, but honestly I actually like a few Rihanna songs. I think she has a good voice it sounds better to me than most radio garbage. I like some of Pink's music too. I also like a lot of death metal.

People get all bent over silly things like VEVO ads if it doesn't match their taste or share the genre they prefer. Youtube is an ad driven business. Not defending them, but we are lucky it is this light with ads. Storage/network op cost is mind boggling...

  • @d4199 No, fuck your kids, i wish they gonna die and im gonna piss over theyre grave and say, fuck you guys. You feel how that feels, Layne Staley was like an "mentor" i never met, but his music and lyrics really helped me at some bad times, shut up, a bad father like you dont know what its like to take heroin and get addicted to it, Layne didnt want to die, just look up his last interview, he didnt want to die that way, well that all being,i shouldnt waste my time on haters like you..:(

  • I never knew Layne personally but I think the pain I feel and he felt are one and the same and because of that we are brothers. RIP man, you are not alone.

  • GREAT FUCKING TUNE

  • Such a beautiful voice he had. I think people who are constantly talking shit on music should appreciate the beauty of music because you could be deaf. Life without music would be painful.

  • never heard this song but that opening solo made this song an instant classic & im not even 30 seconds into the song

  • Mad Season e sotto gigante RIHANNA YOU DA ONE...squallore...

  • Genial :')!!

  • my vain is self chosesn

  • @515shawn nice try man not trying to be an asshole at all but its " my pain is self chosen" like i said just trying to inform not make fun of whatso ever with this day in age the fact that you are listening to this song makes me proud music has gone to hell and anyone to listens to alice in chains is a friend in my book man take care

  • let me make a correction lol i ment mad seasons but i'm sure everyone knows that this is layne from alice in chains this is just a side gig but you get the idea lol

  • ..where are the 19 people that disliked this...

  • I love this song! Nishuan.

  • Layne i love you... with 2000 music ends unfortunately...

  • Layne was such a great person and amazing singer! So much talent lost to chasing that next high. Heroin is a one way street to a miserable place kids, make a smart choice and learn from others mistakes!!!

  • @F110mech that was a nice and uplifting comment more people in the world should be like you and it would be a better place

  • I wish I was born in like 1979 that way I could be a teen in the 90s

  • @jesseisabadfish Best era of music bro. Born 1978 and wouldn't have it any other way. 80s had the best cartoons, tv shows, music......90s spawned alternative music and Nirvana defined what alternative was all about. R.I.P Kurt.

  • @big2000dave Why bring up Kurt on a video that had nothing to do with Nirvana? Your on the wrong channel. And by the way, Nirvana is awful and talentless.

  • @jesseisabadfish

My brother was I am jealous lol I am 23 and I listen to this music all the time I love it! The 90's is where its at!!

  • WTB a time machines

  • im 24 years old and was born in 1987.. when i was growing up i didnt know what i was listening to when i was 4 but i thank the people who showed me what real music was and this is it, todays music sucks so bad compared to this. i wish i couldve met Layne...r.i.p. my man

  • It's easier to start than it is to stop.

  • Kind of odd seeing an ad for Romney whilst listening to Staley sing about is struggles with addiction.

  • i was traveling across country when this came out ... man , i will never forget staley .....i was so far into the deep when i took off from maine .. man , i was heading west to find myself at 19 .. now i 'm creeping up on thirty seven and wanting those days back when i could get up and run and do drugs hit dead shows and just get crazy ..peace , to all you out there that has been there and done it and to the ones that want to go and strike out and find it ....it being you ...laterzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Layne <3

  • Kick ass song thanks JBTIII for the intro

  • yeas 90s waved good by to true music, except The Strokes, but now a day music is all fake

  • Soy de chile , ahora cenare por este nuevo año que llega y esta es la ultima canción que escuchare este 2011. Rest in Peace Layne Staley. ( <3 ).

  • @feliipeuc

Puta que hecho de menos a este weon. Happy New Year hermano, desde un Chileno en Australia.

  • @juancogol muchas gracias amigo , un abrazo desde el fin del mundo.

  • i will never get enough of this song. r.i.p layne staley.

  • I bet girls love this.

  • Why doesn't this video have more views!?

  • @LWizzable Not much ppl Know about these guys but if they were true fans they would

  • @LWizzable jewels are the hardest to find

  • this song breaks my heart. thats all i have too say. rip.

  • @MrWood39 Heroin addiction is a bitch.

  • agreed batman64.... "your pain is self chosen"

  • your pain IS SELF CHOSEN

  • @brattman64

At first it is self chosen, but after someone gets addicted I am sure it must be hell taking drugs just to not feel sick.

I smoke weed a couple times a week so I guess I'm a hypocrite, but when someone chooses to do hard drugs how they can expect it to end up any other way than bad escapes me. Especially opiates where you aren't trying them, you are committing to them. I have never done coke, heroin, X, etc. for one reason, I never wanted to worry about quitting them.

  • perfect.

  • SCREW VEVO ADS

  • @Jreiff11 The ads are the only way you're going to get to watch the video without paying so stop bitching.

  • I wonder how many people shit talking Layne has ever lived the life of an addict?Or can comprehend the title,"river of deceit"?I never liked heroin, crack & coke was my drug of choice.I'm damn lucky I didn't die from it.Been clean for almost a decade. But how fuckin dare you insult a talented man for writing songs about what he was going thru, which you apparently don't know shit about.Nobody just decides"hey,I think I'll become a drug addict today".

  • @mohellbilly i hear ya man i hate when mofos judge artists work by how they lived there life. if it wasn't for music id be lost at best.

  • heroin abuse is pleasure than pain and if you do enough drugs for long enough time you are choosing pain hence my pain is self chosen

  • @MajorRocker1974 Lol. Thanks man. Least you're polite

  • Comment removed

  • @MajorRocker1974 I couldn't agree more. Fergie and Layne, and uh...Jesus? I love browsing the comments of these videos, people posting about how Layne is up in heaven singing for the angels and shit. Layne was quite outspoken when it came to religion, he was an atheist certainly, and to say hes in heaven is stupid. Im also an atheist, and I respect the religious folks giving him their blessing, but it means fuck all if we get down to it. Rest in Peace Layne, We all miss you. 4/20/02 was abad day

  • @beardly01 Your a dumbass and obviously haven't seen the blockbuster hit Stepbrothers. You stupid fucking idiot moron. Their... that was me actually being sincere. I can tell your sense of humor is that of a retarded sloth. Layne is a great singer. I could give two squirts of semen on your moms chest if he believed in god or not. nothing to do with his talent. learn to take a joke clint eastwood. sorry wont say jesus and fergie again. WOW

  • The Deepest most well Written Lyrics and the Most Well song lyrics of all time, Layne Staley

  • T _ T

  • very touching song!!!

  • Very sad story

  • lol why does ne-yo come up in the reccommended videos at the end of the song...is there something you guys aren't telling me?

  • pure poetry

  • My pain is self-chosen when i listen this song... R.I.P Layne

  • awesome heroin wrecked layne still killed it with the season of mad

  • ooooh *_*

  • this is one of the best albums of the 90s, and thats sayin alot, the 90s were the last generation of true musician{mainsream wise}

  • @deftones311100 Couldn't agree more.

  • @deftones311100 You are so right my friend!

  • @deftones311100 You are so right.I'm 33 now,& I hear these albums now,& it just makes me feel young again.Guess I still am to some folks. The 90's was a great time to be growing up.My step-sons are teens now,& I wish they had it as good as I did back then.I have to leave the room usually when they start playing music. Not to mention the drugs we had.I've been clean a long time now,but I haven't heard of LSD or shrooms being around in at least 10 years.

  • @deftones311100

cool words man...two fantastic bands in your user name and this cats voice is one of the best..!

  • @deftones311100 AGREED!!!! The 90's def WERE the last gen of musicians who made their OWN music, rather than these idiot wanna-be's today who just use beats & samples from other musicians.

  • @kwit2869 You got that fucking right. Todays music is shit. No feeling, not meaning and all bullshit. Take me back to the 90s please when I was happy. God what happened?

  • @cmtmj2006 It's a cycle. Innovated bands are replaced with carbon copies making it generic until the next wave of innovators come along repeating the cycle.

  • I like the message of this song... I wish there were more honest people... Honest people are hard to come by anymore... Lying is the rule rather than the exception...

  • There are people that actually have pain issues. It's disappointing when people that are supposed to help you ignore your issues and call you a junkie instead. I ran 4:15 mile for Bloomington North and the police let a meth rob me. It's easier for them to call me mentally ill.

  • I've done countless things selflessly for other people and people think it is fair to treat me like dirt because I used narcotics for multiple real pain issues. The police and system suck. They defend criminals.

  • @mgeisel1 sounds like you have a martyr complex

  • @mgeisel1 I have a friend who has CF and he smokes alot of grass. He's one of the best people I've met.

  • Great song... sums all my experiences with love and relationships.

  • Heroin is a brutal bitch.Believe it!

  • Comment removed

  • if i ever have a son I will name him layne

  • i think i just teared up a bit.

  • I never get tired of this song. So soulful...I miss Layne...

  • Dammit Layne!!I can still listen to this and feel that you're still sitting next to me.OR atleast the feeling..?The newer music just doesn't feel right or has the soul to it.?

  • heroin

  • 16 people did not experience the river of deceit

  • I would say I understand his desire to escape the prison ( to pull off his skin to swim ashore...); I don't need heroin to understand his perspective...my heart, like his, was broken outright...

  • I know exactly what Layne means by this song. I have had a lot of horrible shit come just for my desire to get high. When Layne says his pain is self chosen, its true. Every person has the ability to change, but maybe not the desire.

  • so awesome love that voice he colda made any band sound good

  • I was thinking that I was about to hear something good.

I was wrong! I was about to hear something fantastic!

  • 16 faggots!!!

  • How can anyone dislike this!

  • I HATE ADVERTISEMENTS!!!!!!!!

  • Without being sentimental, fuck this song is good.

  • Layne Staley Brilliant enough said..

  • Layne Staley was a brilliant, genious, one-of-a-kind, but in the end, troubled soul. Who left behind some of the greatest emotional pieces of music the earth has and will ever hear. Damn, its been almost ten years since he was rid of his pain and laid to rest...we're all still missing him so so much!

  • Comment removed

  • fuck these advertisements before the actual video, what a buzzkill

  • you know what...? My kids are still learning all the "Cantrell" riffs and everything that was, and still is AIC.

Fuck you Layne.....great example....things got tough for ya? Yeah...killing yourself is a fine way to leave your legacy.

Not the example i want to leave my two sons. Layne was a fucking coward.......period.

  • @d4199 Calm down man. The guy was an addict. He was getting mixed signals. He's a great guy that couldn't handle life and wanted out. not attention, especially not bad attention like yours. You can tell he sang about his pain. when you're having those kind of thoughts its not something you really just talk to people about. some ppl feel literally lost or not in control. and I don't think the heroine helped his cause any.

  • @crackdealer08 And don't attack something you dont understand or someone. dont call them a coward. What if one day someone you love does that to themself. it's not because their a coward. It's because they're alone inside. I've had two ppl in my family kill themselves. Only thing we can do is ask why. '

  • @d4199 Wow...

People life you make life sad...

  • @pjrocks get adblocker.

  • @pjrocks right on man !! dig that

  • @pjrocks yes, if you'd like to pay watcing the vid then fine, let them drop the adverts.

  • Theres nothing better than brutal honesty in music. To put this out for the world to hear is amazing....

  • There is no song I've ever heard I connect with more than this... I have never felt more depressed, disturbed, or enlightened by any other song...

  • Favorite song of all time. Always think of Layne when I hear this. RIP.

  • 15 persons are Mad!!!!!

  • With out a doubt, my favorite song ever and ever.

  • DAMN i miss the 90s

  • RIP Layne.

  • Fucking Layne, man.. Fucking layne.

  • @quiamboac :)

  • Poor Layne...I miss him.

  • fuck vevo

  • You're missed, Layne

  • I read that he was still abusing when he was recording with Mad Season. I wonder if these blurry lens shots weren't just a creative choice and were hiding how strung out and sick he was. It looks like he's even covered his hands to hide injection wounds. RIP Layne. We hear your pain.

  • I love thrash and death metal. But for some reason me and my friends found a quiet emotional place in our headspace by listening to mad season and alice. This guys voice is like a reflection of all the emotions and fears left unsaid in a troubled childhood. Love you Layne bro. RIP.

  • @JEKAZOL ur comment reminded me of my youth as a teenager in the 90's where its was nothing but cannible corpse ,Slayer ,Deicide ,Obituary etc etc.... watch the metal documentary get thrashed and u have to repect AIC for openinge for 50 plus shows for a hostile Slayer /Megadeth crowd as bottles od piss were flying at Layne on stage , but he earned respect from Scott Ian and the thrash guys cuz Layne would dive right in the crowd and kick ass. As u age u realise thrash is really 4 a kids mind

  • @fpsZach1 Thanks for the comment, but if you think thrash is only for a kid's mind it just means that for you it was a phase you were going through that never reached deep into the heart of the art. I play thrash and produce it. I listen to thrash/death bands in all manner of comlexed and progressive styles. For people like me classic, thrash and death metal is all the same - from birth to grave: Our lives. Informed quick judgements are not possible. There's too much out there on all levels.

  • @JEKAZOL I Feel you man,and I really respect ur love for the art and I'm sorry if it seemed like I was minimalizing your love but I guess I was trying to express the overall culture. I wore Slayer shirts and all the grunge kids were kinda like EMO kids today except the music was real art .It was just to bad the mainstream hi jacked the the great grassroots of Seattle scene out of the ground

  • @fpsZach1 Thanks man. I know what you mean. It's like everything you love is ruined by the 99% of people who just exploit it, missinterpret it, or sell it. Don't get me wrong though, I take my music seriously, but I can't take the industry seriously. \m/

  • @JEKAZOL love you laynebro

  • @JEKAZOL well said....

  • @JEKAZOL A-Men brother

  • @JEKAZOL very well said buddy,:)

  • @JEKAZOL Troubled childhood....what_fucking_ever...

    Get over it douchebag...

And yes, I know hard times.....12 years in the USMC. Over 4 in combat.

Quit putting people who kill themselves on some golden cloud......douche.

  • @d4199 Whoo Weee look at me I'm a dumb jarhead. He did more in a few short years that will affect people more positively than your worthless ass will do in a lifetime, especially with that attitude.

  • You probably cry at all the wrong movies.....wouldn't be surprised.......

  • I can't think of anyone who sings now like you did then Layne..................Thanks for leaving the music to remind us brother.

  • @LutherRayable We will never hear that good of a voice ever again.

  • Janet Devlin

  • And there was me thinking Id only like Layne with AIC.

This is amazing and I feel very silly.

  • @RDprodx..............LAYNE....8)

  • @LutherRayable

    umm...what?

  • damn this is beautiful

  • when i hear anything Layne Staley,

i cry and get an orgasmic feeling,

    i love that dude ,

idc whom tells me different EVER...

i am not just a fan- like many i am a inspired monkey that isn't just an influence from him, I feel connected as a musician. :) truly , live on forever ♥

  • @AlternativeAbyss

    Who*

    You fucking idiot.

  • @AugustinusHipponesis that was a bit uncalled for,

    and appauling?!

uhmm...are you trying to act funny or stupid?!

because that was immature mate. :) i am just being cool , you should too?! enjoy the music ;)

  • @AlternativeAbyss

    Appalling*

I don't like how you people talk about how "hot" and "sexy" a dead guy is. He's dead, just talk about his music, or something. Your channel hurts my eyes.

  • @AlternativeAbyss

    Your voice is pretty.

  • @Driveshaft12345 I see where you're coming from dude and i feel for you, that must have been a hard time in your life to get over drugs, and it's great to hear that you've been clean for 9 years :) I've never been through that position before in my life, but I know that if someone is in deep shit like that then the last thing they need is to get the feeling that no one cares about them I'm sure that you would have wanted support from as many people as possible to get through those dark days

  • Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding...

[Pain] is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self. ~ Khalil Gibran

  • this song made me go out and buy the book "The Prophet" hahhahaha great book by the way

  • Mad Season and Temple of the Dog FTW

  • But while the lyrics are deep, this depth isn't a good one. And this is not to say that I condemn the writers, because e.g. Layne has touched something that is true, but you are now looking at it from the wrong side and it can only pull you down. The thing that inspired Layne pulled him down. Loneliness, angst, God help us! The alternative cannot be and is not, to become hypocrite and take part in false and evil systems. But for me, I have died to myself and have said farewell to this music...

  • @StewardChase1976 are you retarded?

  • @StewardChase1976 Loneliness and angst have inspired artists for thousands of years. And not all of us have had a dark experience with this music the way you have. Music can help people look inward to understand themselves better, and just because you happened to use the music to validate your negativity doesn't mean everyone else has.

  • Going down.... so far away... pain that is self-chosen... WAKE UP!! No, wait...rotten apple... To all those sensing not only the music, what it stands for, and what AiC's lyrics in particular convey, I'd like to share that i've listened to this music for years in dark hours, and that they have felt to me like a friend. Being disconnected with life as it is and society: there is no fit; who sees me?! Friendship is illusion. These songs act as a shelter.

  • I listened to nutshell then dont follow, and now this....i have now cried

  • UNDER RATED!!!!!!!!!

  • What a beautiful video, but it was so clear that the drug had over taken the man and so many others. it was hard to watch and i stopped going down south because of it and I think it saved my live and many more. Still love Wa,Or and Nor Cal and would love to travel now that the pot laws are back to Norml

  • ECW

  • I don't think any of my friends could ever know how much this song means to me.

  • @kewlguitarist - Feel the same way-

  • How the fuck could u dislike this song

  • I wish I could have seen Layne. One of the worst things is that, even if there were to be a revival of the grunge era(a pipe dream), 2 of the the greatest vocalists of all time wouldn't be there to lead the way... RIP Layne & Kurt

  • I missed so much never seeing my favorite bands live. I did see Soundgarden just after Kurt died. But I regret it so much not seeing all these bands. I was 15 almost sixteen in 91 pretty young but then to when I was 18 and on I purchased every CD but never seen Layne. Kurt live. I did see Soundgarden live just after Kurt died a month or weeks. But that was it. Layne just when I listen to him. It's like he is still alive his voice just pierces through my heart. Always been there in good and bad.

  • @Shriekspear LOL sorry for being deep. But this music changed my life influenced me heavily

  • I feel so lucky to have witnessed the Grunge era. I was in high school and college in the 90's. Grunge is the soundtrack to my teens to adulthood. I miss it terribly. I can't believe they call the garbage of today "music". If I could go back in time, I'd land in 1991.
