Gimelstob was trying to do too much and take shots away from Venus. I think his frustration was getting the best of him. He didn't even acknowledge Venus sometimes which is not good in doubles. Venus was basically carrying his weight on her shoulders in this match.

venus & serena wanted to challenge mac b/c they thought just b/c they hit harder they could beat him, LOL!!! i guess richard never explained the diff b/w men's & women's tennis to them! i love how venus kept standing way inside the baseline on mac's serve and mac would use all this crazy spin which she couldnt handle

my guess: steffi backed out b/c she knew she'd win the whole thing w/ mac and didnt want to share her last moments on center court w/ mcenroe... rather lose alone then win w/ mac

@mephatboi Graf didn't want to share her last moments on centre court with Mcenroe? Would have been a great ending actually. The win would have given her the full set of Wimbledon titles. Shame Graf decided to drop out but she was so prone to injury at the time you can understand that she wanted to make sure she was fit for the ladie's final.

awesome! thx for this upload! (although i have a headache now from the feedback)

1) venus CHOSE JG b/c she insisted to play w/ a taller guy (not the best idea given the low bounces on this surface)

2) often times u need help from the net person to hold serves - venus isnt a gr8 volleyer (then & now) & u can c her bad positioning on mac's lucky return - but she can hold b/c JG is imposing at the net, as u c in that 1st game

3) umm... who really owned whom here? mac is in his '40s here!

@mephatboi your answer is really weird! Venus not a great volleyer? Have you taken a look at her career or some of her matches? true it's not her natural feeling, but she won wimbledon 2007 and 2008 with her volleys!

Also check the stats of this match! Vee actually did hold her serve and served faster than JG.

Was a great match and Venus was possibly the best individual player of the lot given she was stuck with Gimelstob who wouldn't stop making mistakes - to get broken 3 times with his serve is just disgraceful - that said McEnroe and Graf were a perfect pair and both seemed to play at the same level - Good god Grafs forehand was some weapon and McEnroes knowledge and skills around the net were just great.
