Obbie's view of history is wrong. Hover was a spender, not a free marketer. It was his spending and protectionist Smoot Haley Tarriff that created and exacerbated the Great Depression. And FDR simply continued what Hover started.

@johnycannuk The Right would have you believe that every dollar the government spends takes ten dollars out of the private sector, that "government spending" is why the people have no jobs. It's a lie.

The private sector is making record profits but they're sitting on the cash. They tried to do the same thing under FDR so he created an "unspent profits tax" which said the rich must put the money back into circulation. Industry used it in R&D and to retool for the 20th century.

@johnycannuk BTW: Republicans are claiming tax cuts will give the rich the money they need for jobs,...but the rich already HAVE the money. It's not a lack of money, it's a lack of customers. It's also off-shoring encouraged by Wall Street (and Republicans) as the "successful business model". We need to make it more expensive to offshore than to hire locally.
