  • where can i get this? So I can put this on my ipod.

  • @LizAndyMovieWatcher

It's on Johns album Church With One Bell, cracking album of covers by him, no Eddie on that but that may be seen as a blessing by some.

  • @williemcgonagall thanks i already have that version so ther is no version with him and eddi

  • Cry if you dont like this. Your life is incomplete.

  • Sublime.

  • I LOVE THIS TRACK AND DANNY THOMPSON AND EDDI READER ARE IN TUNE WITH "JM" THE MASTER

  • @Vickijayce you are so so so right. john and danny could seldom do any wrong in my view but eddi reader's fabulous purity and tone are a joy on this track.

    pam

  • Somehow, this music sounds very different from any other I have been listening to. I love its maturity.

  • the 5 people that dislike tthis seriously need to get slapped like now.

  • i liste to this every night before i got to bed now

  • i listen to this song at least 5 times a day ...like really... i love it

  • i love this song so much and i love her

  • only John could pull off a les paul on the trans atlantic sessions what an awesome musician total legend as are Danny Thompson and Jerry Douglas.

  • I absolutely love this. All the musicians are fantastic. It creates such an immediate atmosphere and that's a quality that only incredibly talented musicians and singers can achieve.

  • should chuck tart oot windy

  • a reply to 'edenic' genius breeds madness and spills out into the world in all manners. maybe the legend that is John Martyn felt that alcohol was the only way he could avoid the madness of his genius and still be able to give us the beauty of his music. peace.

  • Eddi Reader compliments Johns vocals and guitar beautifully. OK she waves her arms about a bit ... so what!!!

  • real jazz!

  • The truth is he was a wonderful singer but an awful man. According to many who knew him he was unbearable, manipulative and a crazed drunk..could still sing though oh and present himself to audiences as a paralytic even though they had paid to see the singer. No I am a realist his alcoholism was a curse to him, his, and his audience. You poor saddo!

  • agreed. Eddie Rear is on the money on this tune. Philistines say otherwise. Its JMs show.....x

  • bullshit, anybody that knows wot jm is about will know that eddi readers performance is in line with wot the big mans all about, its all emotion so go fuk yersel if you dont like it, sheer class

  • has someone stuck a drumstick up her arse, eddie is shite in this, whits all this arm waving!!!!

  • Love to JM

  • i love this - thank you for uploading - x

  • I love the way Eddi moves, and her pigtails, but her contribution to this piece is questionable. However, I think that John's performance is faultless. Just listen to his expression!

  • Eddi, I love your voice but I hate your arms and self-indulgence here. You're not the centrepiece.

  • This is fab - what a great combination of voices. Does Eddi Reader do anything else that sounds like this?

  • I admit it's a bit of a pain in the ass having to sit through Eddi 'expressing herself' in the background, but it's great to hear John and Danny T. anytime. And Eddi did improve; check out her Burns album. Sublime stuff.

  • her voice is somewhat annoying.

  • i miss john boy, his music can uplift me and also bring a tear to my eye, hes one of my heroes and he wont be forgoten, he is a true legend most people hear about him through word of mouth thats a true legend and musician to me, thanks for sharing this music with us my friends

  • how apt for a lush!

  • @edenic you are a fanny. Dont you know its no nice to speak ill of the dead. anyway he was a big time stoner too. so go fuk yersel

  • @bawbagization spell first you lush

  • @edenic listen you faggot go take a long walk off a short pier. John martyn was a legend and if you didn't like him why go on youtube and listen to him and complain. You must be one of those cunts that write in to points of view just because you like the sound of your own fkn voice. away and get a spoon and eat out my arse you fkn parasite

  • @bawbagization

You really are a music crazed moron aren't you? Without a sense of reality. Morons come in all shapes and you obviousely need a shot of his favourite tipple - angry lush!

  • Jerry Douglas seems to be struggling to find a place to be in this set with that big thick Dobro............the chick be trippin though......

  • eddi watching you wi wan of the best blues guitatist ever invented. run away and hide. sorry hen now you go away with speed.

  • Brilliant brilliant singer , RIP big man , wherever you are I bet you are keeping them entertained.

  • *sigh* oh my gosh. what a gifted musician he was. what a true genius. what a unique character. what a guide into unknown musical territory. and what a remarkable rendition, with eddie and the boys. thx a lot!

  • @raasporaa don't be so ridiculous. Good but not that good.

  • So good it hurts.

Where's the time machine when you really want it.

  • Eddi Readers beautiful ethereal backing vocal compliments John Martin perfectly. It's a pity that they never collaborated more often before John sadly died. They sound like kindred spirits.

  • Oh My God I miss this man

  • We all do our fella, we all do.

  • it is helpful to understand that real musicians play what it occurs to them to play...in the way we mere mortals respond in ordinary conversation I doubt any of the participants were troubled by that performance

  • lose the elec guitar

  • look how into the music they all are! amazing!! legend!!

  • gr8 song but not into the female singer!!! john martyn is a legend! rip

  • that sounds like a compliment

  • I love this song, and Eddi enhances it...gorgeous.

  • i disagree sdman, i think the section just prior to 2min shows quite how well they are feeding off each other in this song. I think they are a pure compliment to each other.

ans usual Danny Thompson is rock fucking solid, of course.

  • Johns voice is enough without Eddi.I think she should be dancing around Stone Henge.Very self serving

  • @SuperDidgeman LOL. She's better if you don't watch her.

  • @SuperDidgeman never noticed her as much till you pointed it out... now I cant stop looking over there.

Her voice is sufficient, she's a peculiar bird :-)

  • amazing

    rest in peace, big man

  • For those who are looking for this song, I think you will find it is a traditional tune from the slave days in America. Apart from that I adore this recording. Love John Martyn RIP

  • ....so nice to see our John again....RIP in your blessed weather

  • god this is unique.

  • This is just a fabulous song. Where can I get it ?

  • i could listen to this all day..

that little chord he throws in at the start...

    LOVE IT

  • what a sound

  • i wish i was more aware such musical gods where among us befor its to late, nick drake and jon martyn i love them both surely u cant imagine a lonely oak on a winters eve with whistling winds and brown red and orange crusty leaves!

  • John Martyn's countdown is a new standard.

He sure had the best whisky.

  • Amazing talent. Thank you, for making the video. Excellent performance!

  • RIP John

  • What a great song!

  • Eddi sounds and moves as Pithia should have been wlile been in ecstasy at the Greek Oracle of Delphoi.Love it.

  • Loves The Bass At 1:25 - 1:35

P.S Does Anybody Know Atall What The Guitar Chords Or Tunging Is To Play This ?

  • as far as i know, theres only one song book. and it doesn t have this song!!

  • beautiful

  • "I'll say - he got...." quote, that's wot i ear but nevermind, wotever!!!!

  • Blimey...... that was good.

  • dichard

    that is the funniest

john would pat your head n rub your tummy for that one

may the big man never pat his head when he gets stuck in a tummy rub

  • rip peace john love ya work you make life a joy

  • I often melt into this clip at the end of a hard day, it is sublime and exquisite, but today just slightly marred by my young daughter asking whether it should infact be called 'she got all the whisky'! So much to learn.........

  • You should be proud to have a daughter that notices the difference. :)

  • latin may help. but no shussh. all a girl to do! daddy can tell her such stories. skipping in the bay and artful. rockpools glimmer. no fresh fish there. all salt is burnt with the midday sun....just cockles

or cockels? how do you spell it? baby girls are girls and they never ever grow up

    X

  • john does start this song with "shes got all the ..."

wether its a nod or a dig at reader its up to you to decide

read richadichard comment bout ten before then make up your mind

    bless this stormy weather

  • Oh I say he got all the.... surely

  • open your ears.......... not your mind

" aw she got all the whisky"

    first line 4 sure

  • @britcat123 you should be just proud

  • John Martyn - R.I.P. A wonderful music man. Pairing him with the talented, fantastic Eddi Reader was a math made in music heaven (where Martyn is now).

  • Thanks John - Rest in Peace

  • Wow, what wonderful voices! They fit so good together...

  • Never heard this before - love it, same haunting emotion, thank you!

  • While John probably peaked musically by the early 80s, this performance displays everything about his uniqueness and the power of his voice. Pure cool. And even a little bit of his cheeky humour at the end.

I shall love his music until I'm up there with him!

  • RIP John... you legend

  • I think Eddie is trying the old "pat your head and rub your tum tum at the same time " game, keep trying kid....just dont get in Johnny's way!! HE DA MAN!!

  • Love john martyn but eddi reader annoys me in this vid.

  • I can't offer therapy. My rates are too high! But please check out 'Dear John' by missy reader. chill init and so coolio and and

  • Johns a true professional and always has been (he had his first album out the year I was born, London conversation in 1967), I've seen him play a good few times and he always delivers the goods. Not seen this video before and am again sooooooo impressed by his musical ability/influence with other musicians.

    Awesome as ever.....

  • saw this dude in manchester on sunday night. He got totally better alnight! All about the voice! couldn't be arsed to tune/echo the electric...so on to acoustic...He was sober and cool! at the Lowery...followed by Mr Yorkston on the monday! waht a gig too!

  • Great video! Love Eddi Reader's vocal work!

  • This man is a guru a god xppressin inner one ian is here

  • she just restored my faith in her, sang it gurl!!

  • fooking brilliant

  • She's Eddi Reader - if you're quick you can catch her on the Transatlantic session on BBCi player

  • nice job, don't know what that woman is waving her arms about for but she has a great voice

  • You honestly don't know why people move their bodies when they are making music?

You really don't know? Are you serious? Go on, tell the truth, your'e having a laugh aint ya son?

  • Wow!

  • Eddi has the groove by the tail...she moves so incredibly. Love her version of the the Boo Hewerdine song, Joke. She adds something indescribable...remarkable. A perfect counterpoint to JM's growling.

  • seen john several times, never failed to move me,love this record, ten years ago. johns not fared to well, since but an amazing man,all thr same.

  • I agree, I have followed JM for many years as well. I great performer. let's hope that there is more to come, I lone Eddi's voice too, what a great combination.

  • Big up Eddi reader!

  • Great !!! It's realy great... All the Transatlantic videos are on the top.

    Many thanks...

  • Perfect example of making a song your own!!

Love Bobby Charles, love Johnny too Bad.

    Great!

  • Top stuff from John and Mr Thompson, how I miss going to the concerts . Thanks a bunch for a great upload

  • Lovin it! I think Eddie Reader was supposed to be at the castle next door for the Transcendental Sessions and got a bit lost! :o)

  • dadgadlover - these songs are from a BBC programme called the 'Transatlantic Sessions' Since there is a current season you can probably watch the latest on your TV!!!

JosephHMoody -Eddi Reader used to be in a pop group called Fairground Attraction which had a hit with a song called "Perfect' years ago.

She now does folk and traditional Scottish stuff. There's a wikipedia entry if you'd like more details.

  • I knew about the Scottish Trad stuff, but the Fairground Attraction thing was news to me.. Thanks - I used to 'cover' that number... Makes it all the better to know Eddi was involved...

  • I thought I had recorded all the original Transatlantic Sessions but I appear to have missed this one. Wish the Beeb would show them all again.

  • Beautiful! Fantastic!!

  • Great performance! Is there a DVD on sale somewhere?

  • Wow, thanks for this. Dream team combination. Truly a Zen moment!!!!!!!!!!

  • These videos are absolutely brilliant. Mnemonyxx, you're a gentleman ( or a lady ) and a scholar. John isnt quite on top of his game ( his lyrical improvisations dont always come off ), but still light years ahead of any singer on the planet.

What the hell is Eddi Reader on, by the way?

  • wonderful - thank you for this

  • Henry VIII is alive and well! The big man still sings with passion.

  • great song

  • ... hu ' so we onl ' hav ' tha ' ... " Empty Jar " left naow , hmmmm ... d ' we have t ' change dee " WITJ " song then , hey ? : ° ( ... and wot i 'm gonna put in ma laaager ? ... pineapple juice ? - Great song and performance though ; )
