These films are cool. Unfortunately ever time I watch them, a thumbnail for a video of George Clooney lip syncing "Man of Constant Sorrow"pops up in suggested videos. Clooney is such a tool. That scene just ruined a great old song for me.
I find these "old" performances extremely entertaining and it's good that you are spotlighting the origins of banjo playing. Good job, keep 'em coming.
Fake ass misleading title, but the banjo playing was awesome and the elaborate and humorous description makes up for it, besides the cool hat, so it's all good as far as I'm concerned!
Well you are all wrong 'cos it was my granpappy that filmed this and I have the original 16mm film to prove it, and anyone that don't believe Hitler played the banjo needs to listen to a CD called "Deep South and Shining" by Hitler and the Banjo Boys, he was also famous for starting wars
Well....... I think this is one of the funniest videos that I have ever come across and you must have had a blast making it. I especially like the "biography". Your banjo playing aint bad either! :-)
Jesus Christ people don't ya'll know people were playing three finger style waaay before scruggs , all he did was just speed it up some . This is not even scruggs style per-se its just clean arpeggio ......
Very funny. Nothing 19th-century about this at all. Isn't the banjoist the same nitwit we see on Oldcremona...the guy you see sitting down after turning on a camcorder? What a fake. BTW, the lighting is ALL WRONG for Black Maria.
@countorlock100 This isn't Scruggs style, it's classic style -- a method of fingerpicking similar to classical guitar which was very popular from about 1880 to 1915.
@ComradeMorshu I know its not sgruggs in the sense that its syncopated arpegios, just meant picking on the up-stroke rather than frailing. Great playing no matter what the style
@countorlock100 Well, up-picking IS period-correct for the the time this video represents. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, up-picking fingerstyle was the most common method of playing (just look at any tutor book from the period, or listen to the many cylinder recordings of Fred Van Eps or Vess L Ossman here on Youtube).
Ha, that's true, there were no sound movies in the 1800's. The fact anyone is ignorant enough to believe this is precisely why so many people get scammed.
Sooooooooooo Fake. How do i know it's Fake? 5 string banjo's DID NOT Exist Yet... Also, Nobody played 3 Fingered Style Then (aka Scruggs Style) Very much so fake but ok banjo playing =]
five string banjo and very old 4 string are newer than five string and he isnt playing scruggs style i dont like scruggs because he killed a million other banjo styles but hes good none the less
so five string banjo were common all the way through the 1800s and 3 finger could be ragtime banjo or many other styles clawhammer was also present not to be mean on this comment just clearing things up
@edisonphonographfan "...i dont like scruggs because he killed a million other banjo styles..."
Wow...that's GOT to be one of the most ridiculous statements I've EVER heard. Scruggs didn't kill ANY styles at all. In fact, thousands of people are playing the 5-string *because* of him.
Really enjoyable song and delivery. Great presentation. Bet the folks that called this "fake" would've been the first on line to see P.T. Barnum's Feejee Mermaid back in the day.

almost fooled my but your one mistake was.......they didnt have hats in the 19th century...............and for those you think im serious haha made you think
Ok, this is the first time I have been compelled to comment on You Tube. But some folks out there take themselves WAAAY too seriously! This was meant to "entertain" not fool people. All these comments about sound quality etc proving it is a fake are absurd. My 10 year old could tell it wasn't genuine. DUH!
Hey get a sense of humor! I thought it was very clever & a great way to present music from that period.
One more thing: the video of Hitler playing the banjo is also a fake !
this is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooofake.
@2020525142152 You are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo stupid.
I had my doubts when I saw the title (how common were movie cameras in the 19th century?) and the sound.... well, I always thought sound movies came out in the 1920's.
But the family resemblance is astonishing! It almost looks like the channel picture man run through a couple of filters to simulate old time film! How can I doubt an ancestor with such an exalted career?
Great picking. I don't suppose he used Nylgut on those old time banjos, did he?
@chevy0215 Actually, they did. You're thinking that 3-finger style implies bluegrass picking like Earl Scruggs, but "Guitar-style" picking was actually quite commonplace from the beginning.
@chevy0215 Oh yes, they did. There was fingerstyle Minstrel banjo, and then three-finger classical banjo. It was all the rage in the 19th century and early 20th century.
It's a gas, man, very sweet. Great to hear the banjo really taking off these days. Now, if I could only get the hang of that goldurn clawhammer! Cheers, Kurt.
Cameras in the 1800s and early 1900s were operated by winding the reel by hand. That's why old video footage tends to change speed and is usually too fast. But this footage isn't. And there is no way they could record audio in sync. IT'S FAKE.
Excuse sir, but yes, THE 5 STRING BANJO WAS INVENTED IN THE 19th Century, so I believe that you are the "epic fail!" that you speak of. Before you post on antoher video do some damn research.
Well... according to you last statement, you DID NOT know when the 5 string banjo was invented. And OF COURSE it's a fake. Can't you see that the guy playin the banjo in the "footage" is clearly the guy in his display pic!? "he wouldn't of been alive in 1863" Are you that stupid?Get a life, and learn your history. Oldcremona just did this one for fun, and it looks cool. If you would like to discuss more history with me, and compare research, just message me.
What a hoot you old humbug! You do P.T. Barnum proud! Maybe he's in your ancestry, too? I really like your biography, outfit, and stroke-style Minstrel banjo. "Find" some more of the old Edison reels. I'll watch 'em! Do you have any Snake Oil for sale?
All I can say is WOW. I thought it might be a fake but obviously this is very very real. Wow!!!! And I can't belive that the low mid range is recorded so well when I thought that was impossible back then. Incredible. I have to write to my local scientific newspaper and let them know. rejoice! Rejoice!
How on earth did the sound quality get so good on this video, if it is really from around 1900 or before?? Some kind of digital remastering? Or just modern sound over an old film?
Actually, earl scruggs made different 3 finger rolls. As bluedanbob said, three finger banjo playing was invented alot earlyer. You get your facts straight.
Can't you see the point of the video is to bring an old tune out...not make a proper fake film...oldcremona, keep it up. Popular music fro mthe apst is the soul of these people talking to us.
WOW what a find Hezekiah did worry that Edison hadn't synchronised sound with film,
And that the first sound with film was the jazz singer in 1928 - he just side stepped this lack of technology and recorded it with sound - fantastic achievement -- mean while he just leap frogged over the whole next 20-30 years of the hollywood silent film era of Chaplin and Buster Keaton and when straight to sound
Not a bad try but go to a costume shop next time -the shirt is machine made(hence long after the alledged date ) and the sound of the slide on the stings at the end implies a modern recording system - but I like the bit about the sheep herder
These films are cool. Unfortunately ever time I watch them, a thumbnail for a video of George Clooney lip syncing "Man of Constant Sorrow"pops up in suggested videos. Clooney is such a tool. That scene just ruined a great old song for me.
