You should see my town centre now. It's depressing.

When I was younger it used to be booming, full of people, everytime I go there now this all-pervasive sadness takes over me - the place won't be there much longer. Why? Tesco cropped up a few years ago. And now they're getting an extension and making it even BIGGER than it already is. It's scary how fast they're growing.

I'd even go as far as to say that they're worse than Wal-Mart!

Tesco do abuse animals and workers, and youre right there not the only ones. But as the 4th largest retailer in the world, they should be setting a good example. Yes, Primark abuse their clothes manufactures, they pay them little and they have to work in such poor conditions. But Tesco should take responsibility. Being the 4th largest retailer in the world, they could easily afford to build a decent place for them to work over there, or at the very least increase their pay.

Lets put it this way - Tesco is not the largest supermarket group that operate in the UK - ASDA are as they are owned by Wal-Mart who are quite a lot bigger. Tesco has more of a presence in the UK than Wal Mart, but Wal Mart is the bigger company. And yet I don't see many compaints about ASDA.

I should also point out that M&S do currently trade in China, although their trial stores have apparently not been doing too well.

Just a quick comment about the Co-op, since TheGoodNewsShowUK mentions it. The Co-op is the only supermarket group which I do have a problem with, and it's mainly down to their "ethical standards", which are unbelievably hypocritical.

Another Ilfracombe example. They moved to a larger store in 2006 and vacated their High Street store. However they refused to sell it to any company that didn't meet their ethical standards, so it remained empty for over 2 years.

It's not so much selling to an unethical company, more that they don't meet the Co-op's own ethical standards. As a result, the shop was empty and an eyesore for 2 years despite plenty of interest from local businesses, which hurts local trade far more than a new Tesco store. Eventually the local council forced the Co-op to sell up, and it's now an independant factory store.

And Tesco are by no means the only ones to keep land - Sainsburys had a plot of land here for 6 years before selling.
