Mars used to be lush & green. Still had a reddish look due to it's red clay soil. It co-orbited the sun with Tiamot, the planet that later broke up & formed what we now call Earth.

When Tiamot was destroyed by a direct hit, Mars was struck on its side & flung into a new orbit. All life on Mars was destroyed.
