Eric Whitacre is the "Master of the Melisma" and what I call "Calm Melody." So many of his songs are so peaceful. Even "Cloudburst" which has some pretty dynamic moments is still very calm in certain sections.
He's probably the best living American composer (along with Eric Barnum).
Beautiful song, well sung. Group costume is even more remarkable - sort of like Start-Trek cross the Movementarians of the Simpsons. Unifies nevertheless!
This song is so beautiful, my high school choir is performing it this semester. The wonderful thing about it is that it is so exquisite, but is actually a very simple piece to learn.
T_T...how come alto always hardly can be heard....this song alto is the one singing melody line...but it sounds like soprano singing melody line. LOL...
Nice sound!!! Facial expressions in the chorus speak volumes. I am doing this piece with my chorus and I am going to have them view this video in all of its expressive qualities both in sound and appearance.
@Chillin2nite Close, but Kung Fu Panda was made by Dreamworks Animation. So the major studio that wanted Eric Whitacre to compose for them was Dreamworks.
@TorturedXeno See, I thought that also. However, when I read about that story in the front cover of the song, I believe it said Disney. Now I could be wrong, or it could have been a typo, because I do realize that Dreamworks made Kung Fu Panda. I could have sworn the music said Disney though, because he talked about how much he (Whitacre) loved Disney Animation.
This is a beautiful piece, and is expertly performed. Well done - keep making amazing music and inspiring those of us who aspire to create beautiful music as well. Is this an auditioned young adult community choir?
@jchagan05 I am super jealous. I graduated from music school a year and half ago and have been teaching 7th-12th grade choir in a little town in upstate NY. I TERRIBLY miss singing this kind of music and really wish there was something like this in my area...

This work, while very beautiful (and has a wonderful text), isn't as experimental or progressive as Whitacre's previous works, such as Lux Arumque or Leonardo's Dream. Kinda a let down for me.
Honestly, it reminds me more of Nobuo Uematsu's compositions for the Final Fantasy series.
Yeah, we had the opportunity to talk to Eric Whitacre a bit about this piece. It is intentionally simplistic because it was to be used in the score for an animated film (that never ended up being made).
It reminds me a bit of the ice dance from Edward Scissorhands (although much less macabre). That gorgeous one to the minor three then back to one....love love love.
I think they made Kung Fu Panda instead. I was reading the info on the first page of the sheet music and I told my friend in the middle of one of our after school soprano practices and we both started laughing. XD
I agree with the Edward Scissorhands reference, btw, and the minors in this piece have a delicate feel, they are quite lovely, especially in certain places where all the parts fuse together to create these beautiful chords. :]

Whitacre is amazing- This piece is one of my absolute favorite choral pieces.
My school's Advanced Vocal Ensemble sang this at our last concert, and I was absolutely riveted. It's beautiful, soft, and thoroughly moving.

Eric Whitacre stuns again. The man is a genius. He redefines choral music song by song.
