I read "Dreams that Money Can Buy" about Libby Holman years ago. It's great to finally be able to hear the "soundtracK"! So weird that she was super-popular in the 20s and 30s but today seems almost forgotten.
The voice takes a while to get used to, but stick with for a while and you shall be rewarded. I have just one cd to date, they are hard to get old of, I only see 2 available from Amazom UK. If interested, I suggest you go for the Jasmine cd, that's the one I have and very good it is too
Love that cool orchestra with its jazzy horn, with sexy Libby Holman doing her thing! Her brassy, sexy, catchy voice is at her best here! A real treat!
I heard a recording some years ago, and have looked for the record in my 78rpm colllecting without success since. Leo Reisman's Orchestra doing "Moanin' Low" vocal by Clifton (Mr Belvedere) Webb, without a change in the lyrics. This trdatment by vocalizts was not uncommon. Example: "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" from Show Boat. I have the Nat Shilkret recording of taht w/Franklyn Baur as vocalist; no change to suit Gender either. Libby really bests this out. She sells it! 5***** to you.
Interesting also that there were gay rumors about both vocalists you mention.
Then again, maybe it was someone in Victor A&R. From 1926 there's also robust baritone Frank Bessenger singing "I'd Rather Be The Girl In Your Arms, Than The Girl In Your Dreams" with Jean Goldkette & His Orchestra; also a Victor recording.
yes what a life. real life drama is indeed stranger than fiction. there were two books written about libby in the 80s. the one titled, dreams that money can buy is by far the best and well researched. a good book on montgomery clift is by patricia bosworth. check them out. madonna was considering a film in the 80s in which she would play libby holman. i wish that it had been made. jessica lange did frances, one on libby would have been wonderful. all the money in the world did not protect her.
I just finished reading the book titled "Libby" which details her life, her recording career and the controversy that surrounded her. So I just had to go to YouTube and check her out...she sounds great. I've collected music for years, but am still learnin'...thanks to people like yourselves that archive this stuff for the rest of us.
I also was interested in hearing Libby. That's what enabled me to meet Lee Morse, my most-favorite vaudevillian singer. And because of Miss Morse, I met Jane Green, another songbird with an unbelievable voice. Check 'em out; tell me what ya think!
Like Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Libby had a signature song and this is it.
