Does anybody know how to replace the terrain graphics of the game? I've got an exe editor and have changed all the player and item graphics but it won't let me replace the bitmaps at all - so the magic spell icons, the buildings, the maps, etc.
It is much easier to use the mouse because you can click and drag the character to increase his/her speed dramatically. It makes moving through the dungeons a lot easier.
The game only allows 16 color icon, and it only allows for a very short icon file location (like "C:/example.ico" or something almost as short); but besides that problem, it very, VERY often gives this weird error about not having enough memory to use whatever icon you're trying to use. It's quite sad and frustrating.
Now, if you can get the rare and unfortunately non-free program "Microangelo", it can edit icons in .exe files, allowing you to do major graphics hacking to good ol' COTW.
Ahhh.... Castle of the Winds, another cherished childhood memory. I remember being scared to go too deep into the second dungeon because I was afraid of the Wights (don't ask me why lol, I was young).
As for anyone interested, you can download the game for free now, Rick Saada (the creator) made it freeware several years back. He's since gone on to work on Pirates of the Burning Sea, so I doubt he cares about the lost income. :P
It could be that the copy your friend had was the shareware version which only includes the full version of part one. That was the most common distribution.

Castle of the Winds is the one that the WINDS are of and if ur telling the truth then u must know that it's better than any MMORPG like Tibia or Runescape cause those games really suck and everyone's a dickhead.
Oh yeah, I had a question...How did you move your character at an angle/at a slant without the mouse? Anytime on mine, I would always have to use the mouse to move at an angle/slant. :)
Number pad.. I don't know if you have to have numlock on or off, but 7 9 1 and 3 should be your diagonals... just toggle the numlock and try again if it doesn't work...
Oh man! I love this game!!! So many memories...lol...Hey did you know there's a cheat for it? Yep. If you didn't already know, at the beginning of the game, put your constitution ALL the way down as much as you can. Then put the rest on st, int, dex, w.e. Then, get a spell, I choose magic arrow, and keep on casting the spell until you get around -21 in your mana. By then, your health should have sky-rocketed and your const. will be at max! Sleep until mana is restored! Enjoy! :)
You don't have to create a new character for the "second quest." From what I've seen in the demo many a year ago, the second game would load a clear save from the previous game.
Hey, if someone wants to, go for it! If not, maybe I'll do it... later... I'll give other people the chance to claim it, since I already have my own LPs to deal with.

set CASTLE1.EXE to run in 256 colors
make 16bit 32x32px .ico file in the same folder as CASTLE1.EXE
have no spaces in .ico filename
and include the .ico filename extension
when typing file name in to custom character icon option within the game

The first roguelike game I played, pretty easy but really fun. I had both games back then, and played through them a bunch of times.
Never got my custom icons to work though, lol.
