  • My middle child has Aspergers Syndome and Temple Grandin is her hero...she wants nothing more than to be a scientist....Autism can be a blessing.

  • I feel ya, I have autism and though I'm glad I'm able to have freinds, sometimes I feel like people are just idiots (not everyone, though.)

  • Autisim exists on a massive scale from those who function and live completely normal lives and you wouldn't be able to tell had autism to those that need constant care.

Clearly - which end of the scale a person exists on is going to dictate whether it is a 'gift' or not.

I'd never describe autisim as a blessing.

  • @marikachica by scale you mean spectrem, right

  • @jodidaniels yes :) sorry..

  • dang! art4thecure u wrote soooo many comments~

  • kind of reminds me of Alice from the Brady Bunch

  • Spectrum: A continuous sequence or range. Autism ranges in intellect, speech&communication difficulty, sensory issues...those with ASD's fall somewhere from severe to high in level of functioning. For those of you who took the time to read this instead of post cruel "shock" comments, amen.

  • I don't get it. So why is thinking in a way that the rest of society cannot comprehend a good thing?

  • because they come up with shit that doesnt make sense to most people usually invent high tech shit

  • @EpicFatKid

it is a good thing- the way we see the world is incredible in ways you cant even fathom- i have aspergers syndrome which is a form of high functioning autism- i can see details within details and as an artist it amplifies it and the way i can appreciate my surroundings and suck it in- words cant begin to describe- temple mention how we 'see the smallest details within' and i cannot describe it - there are different levels of autism and different kinds. ppl follow stereotypes.

  • Autism is not a blessing. I mean it really depends on the severity of the autism. Consider not being able to communicate with most people it make it difficult to get through life and if you don't have a support system then at time it seems impossible

All i am saying is that maybe it is extreme to say autism is a blessing

  • @SoulStatement

i have aspergers which is a form of high functioning autism and i beg to differ- you people who are cruel, put us down by the word 'retard' to call people stupid and follow stereotypes cannot understand w/ your closed mind the beautiful way we can see the world- the details withing details is off the charts- bill gates has aspergers, charles shultz, einstien, and my fave alfred hitchcock- break free from the stereotypes-

  • @art4thecure1 "you people are cruel"??? but you don't even know who I am.

    also

all the people you mention are just some people. Since autism has such a high degree of severity a lot of people with autism become dependent on someone else. Like I said it depends on how severe the case is and sometimes it is difficult for the family to just adjust. In fact I know someone who can't function without anyone support of their family.

  • @SoulStatement

if you only knew or were more aware of how many people loosely use the word 'retard' or 'retarded' out an about without thinking of people's feelings- it hurts- we have one word and its 'normal' - too many people use this word 'retard' and it is insensitive- people on posts, in shopping centers, even employees- i told 1 employee to stop using the word 'retard' loosely & told her i had a form of autism and its a put down- ppl look @ autism as a bad thing & fear their kids have it

  • @art4thecure1 buy the way about autism is how most people look at autism and don't think of ass-burgers or the rest most people think of down syndrome witch is where half of the stereotype comes from by the way oh and another thing is i went to a high school that specialized in kids with autism hell i have it but what made me go was the school toled my parents i had it and if i didn't learn about it and take care of it i could go to prison. in other words people look down on autistic people

  • @dexhellhound

for someone who went to a school specializing in autism you cant spell aspergers. also had to read your comment a few times to know what the heck your talking about... i said in my comment that people stereotype and put down people who have autism and go as far as to use the word 'retard' to describe things that are stupid. also said in my comment that people fear their child would have autism. i by the way have aspergers syndrome which is a form of high functioning autism

  • @art4thecure1 ....i cant tell your agreeing or disagreeing with me...but like i said i live in Houston and when the word autism comes up most people hear think of down syndrome a good precentige of the time

  • @dexhellhound

i had to read your comment a few times but i think we're agreeing. all i said was people stereotype autism, put people down who have it, and fear their children have it.

  • She is a great person, but man does she have a script, I think she mezmorized it. Every interview she says the same thing.

  • What Temple Grandin does is talk about autism and at the same time she's hiding it.

  • High functioning Autism for you. However, she doesn't make eye contact throughout the entire interview, which is perfectly normal. Many Autistic people are visual thinkers. It's all about repetition, routine, and pictures for some. Claire Danes did a good job portraying her. Definetely a Golden Globe coming her way. Just when I thought Drew Barrymore's performance in "Grey Gardens" couldn't be topped.

  • just saw her movie last night.. very moving

  • Wow very interesting. God bless her!

  • this is a really interesting woman!

  • i wish she was my professor

  • WOW! Really? What was that like?

  • @centralidea me too! i wana go to Colorado State University because of her!
