This is not about auto tune or computers. This is pure talent. In fact magnified as Dave Mason sings this even better than he did 30 years ago. I love the the desperation & edge he's added to the line "I'm just trying to get along". More than any song, this expresses the hurt, & pain of a relationship that ended up badly I got a lump in my throat just listening now, and remembering her.
@scootmanbill That is because the guitar is tuned to an open chord. You don't have to fret the strings too much that way. I just wonder what tuning he uses?
Great post!!! TY. And I hope all is well with John.He must be a very special person to have had Dave mason come and sing just for him. That's awesome. How about an explanation of the whole situation from the poster??? that wld be cool.
@yubertuber1 J-R is doing just fine :) As far as I know. And I saw him not long ago. And I saw Dave Mason hangin' aroung town recently. Dave is a very nice man.
A spruence class navy destroyer.Designed for chasing subs. Four DC 10 jet engines turning two 30 foot propellers made the trip from England to South Carolina in three days. The ultimate 500 foot speed boat for the captain to ski behind. Jamming on the helicopter deck was one of my fondest memories. Comments from storekeeper apprentice J C Bigornia 1981. Ships ahoy!
The real deal! Talent that is undeniable and way under rated and recognized. This guy sounds so much better than anyone from his era at this stage in his life. If I am wrong then tell me who sounds better? This is as raw as it gets!
John Fogerty, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, David Crosby, quite a few from his era still sound great and have the goods..but Dave is undeniably sounding wonderful
I've never been into "open tunings", but watching D.M. in action here, tempts me to try it out! This song takes me back to the "soap opera" of my junior high years; to go through "high school" without living out this song (at least once) seems hard to imagine!
I learned to play this song in "reg. tuning": to get the "jangly" effect (on 6 or 12 string, reg. tun.) you can play a bar chord A and B (5th &7th fret), but leave the 1st & 2nd strings (E &B)open. On the original, a "phase shifter" gives the "sweeping" sound to the guitar.
yeah i figured that out one day just warming up, i was like "now what fuckin song is that, i know it is a song" and it was funny, cause hours later driving down the road this song came out the radio, and i remembered. haha good shit
I was searching for this too. The guitar tabs repeatedly use a version tabbed out from someone at Sanford U. but I didn't like it. Try tuning your guitar to open E tuning, that is EBEG#BE. Listen to the open strings. You should be able to work out the song from there.
What a gift to be able to hear, and see, Dave. As noted, quite the bare bones setup and his voice remains gold. He couldn't look any more like the average Joe you meet on the street if he tried, yet he starts to sing and you know. Clearly a sombre event for the attendees, but we can hope they enjoyed and appreciated this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. thank you for posting this.
One of the great things about yourtube is the opportunity to see live performances like this, where we can hear Dave Mason playing and singing solo, bare-bones and amazing. So clear and so much heart! The audio is amazinly HQ. Thanks for sharing this amazing performance!!! ps: this is clearly an event help in honor of a man who is a dentist and has some serious health issues - yet he responds with a smile to the camera - HAVE SOME HEART!
that is defiantely the reason i went from my 10,000 song catelogue on winamp to youtube, just to see the raw, live performances like this. not to say i dont go back to winamp for the songs i can't find on youtube. which is kinda funny, thinking there aren't songs on youtube that i do happen to have.
great performance man' I cried almost!!!!!! I felt that !!! reading post . Love the guitars .

Too bad talent was lost with the 1970's end. What a shame! :(

Look at the way he fingers the guitar. He has played that so many times, he hardly touches the strings. Wow, talk about mastery!

Who is this Roger DSS? If i exhibit ignorance my apologies, but, never heard of him

Wow, now that's a coincidence.
I found this looking for Dave Mason, and I see John-Roger, "Doctor of Spiritual Sciences", founder of MSIA.
The references in the criticisms section in the Wiki entry on him will point you to all sorts of, ahem, interesting, info.

Dave is an iconic talent, but the author of this song is Jim Krueger, check the credits.
