Zoe Williams tries to win with a characteristic mixture of obfuscation, condescension and coquettishness. Doesn't come off. Everyone has a choice in what they do, rioters wouldn't choose to burn down buildings if they had received consistent moral guidance from an early age. Instead they usually have no fathers and get mixed messages from people such as Miss Williams who offer them an excuse on a plate. These kids want firm instruction and discipline not abstract theorising about inequality.
