If you put aside negativity towards Shyamalan, he actually makes some interesting points; the idea of community and communication (in a mass-media sense) as well as the theme of prejudice; themes that are also explored in Signs, The Village and Lady in the Water. The Happening isn't his best work (neither is TLA), but he still doesn't deserve the Uwe Boll treatment. If you really HATE his movies, just don't watch them.

A movie doesn't NEED a twist to be good. But that is M's gift. In Village he scared the hell out of us with something he specifically told us we did not need to be afraid of. In 6th he led us by the hand for an entire movie only to show us at the end we'd tread a completely different path. Here, no such quality storytelling occurred. We were not scared, we were startled. It's easy to startle an audience by having things leap out at them. It's easy to horrify with grotesque imagery.

I personally don't understand why critics are giving it such a low rating. Expectations somehow have been twisted to think that all M Night wants to do is scare the audience. The movie has nearly as many beautiful metaphors and symbols as Signs did (which fit it's name). People in the cinema were terrified. More so than the other useless teen horrors. The script wasnt perfect but good enough. M night purposely executes his films 50's b movie style. Its intentional.
