If you put aside negativity towards Shyamalan, he actually makes some interesting points; the idea of community and communication (in a mass-media sense) as well as the theme of prejudice; themes that are also explored in Signs, The Village and Lady in the Water. The Happening isn't his best work (neither is TLA), but he still doesn't deserve the Uwe Boll treatment. If you really HATE his movies, just don't watch them.
why does everybody keep saying that his movies suck just bcoz he is an Indian...He was born and brought up in America n is as much American as u all are....I agree few of his movies were extremely poor....but his movies like The Village,The 6th sense,Signs were so gr8....hollywood has totally forgot movie making xcept for few directors(Chris Nolan,Quentin Taranatino,David Fincher etc) ...u guys r so racist!!

It's weird because every film that's acclaimed to be awful I always enjoy... I found this film quite entertaining and interesting... wanted to see how it ended so I didn't skip through any of it...
I love this movie and it's weird for me... it is like I wouldn't undestand why so many people tell so firmly that this movie is shit... I think its like they always expect ferrari to make mega-fast sport cars and when they make a common street car they say its shit whitout even knowing anything about cars... this director its important people think about it...
I belive all of this Directers movies are amazing, for one they all have a new sort of emotion. it is bringing something new to movies that has been lost with time. The Movie Industry has gone down hill and he is bringing something back that was lost or brining something new. take this movie for Exemple. it is a "What If" kinda movie. what if nature could do this? and all of you who hate his movies are just stuck with what is "Cool" in the movie bizz and have no sence of Imaganation
Its a shame that The Last Airbender is a boring mess of a movie too, amazing they managed to fuck it up with such great source material.M Night needs to let go of his ego and stop insisting on writing the screenplays for everything,he can be a great director but his writing has been shit for what? like 5 movies now.He has had enough chances.Amazing drop off in quality after two great movies. He needs to go back to a smaller budget and find some good writers if he even makes another movie again.
When I first saw this movie I really was disappointed. I love his other movies: Lady in the Water, Signs, The Village, Sixth Sense. I was hoping for something similar in which he has you think one thing and then you find out it is another but then there was all this stuff in between you didn't know was there and you have to see the movie again because you missed it the first time. Even though I really disliked The Happening, I am still a fan. I would love to create a movie with him.
This Movie was HOT GARBAGE. if you think this movie is for intellectual people, you are mistaken as to the definition of intellectual. This plot was bullshit. The acting was the worst i can remember seeing in a big budget film. the only good part was when the kids got blasted with the shotgun, because all these characters needed to die asap. if you liked this, jump off the roof of a tall building, please.
Who does he think he is that he has to put his name in the title of his films? I can't stand this guy. And this movie was one of the worst I have ever seen.
Night makes movies for intelligent people, you mentally challenged (to a certain level) people would never understand his movies, because all you care about is Lady Gaga's penis
i think this movie has a deeper meaning that most people do not understand. stop comparing this to other movies and just try and understand the meaning here. its very deep.
haahahahahaha for something to be underrated it means it must have some redeeming quality. this movie missed on every level. m. night had no business charging innocent movie goers such as myself for this heaping pile of shit.

move over "plan 9 from outer space," cause this is the worst movie ever made. wow. what an unbelievable fuck up M. Night Shyamalan is. how do you go from "sixth sense" to "the happening?" i honestly thought this guy, after sixth sense, might be some sort of contemporary Hitchcock, but he's more like a cross between Ed Wood and Douglas Sirk! and i thought orson welles was a loser...well, at least he had talent. M. Night Shyamalan's takes the cake...biggest wanker in film history.
Are you kidding! his movies are terrible, sighns...poop, the village...ok,lady in the water..fucking terrible, the happening...shit! Terrible acting,..dialog,..story. M. Night Shayamalan writes movies like a stoned high-school student. CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!
This film explains everything- I just watched it and now I finally understand the truth behind the Universe. Mankind's suffering and mortality are not in vain: Thousands of generations of people have come and shuffled off this mortal coil, some in comfort, some in horrible pain, but until now, all have avoided the ultimate pain. But now the full scope of our evil has been reached and we must pay the ultimate price: we must be subjected to the works of M. Night Shayamalan, and oh how it hurts.
this is how you tell if some one is a simpleton, They wont like M nights movies, ask them if the y watch slashers they will say yes. dont worry M night theres stiil alot of inteligent ppl in the world ,i didnt say nessecerrily educated you fag! i said COHERENT ITUITIVE .you been exposed.
m night is brilliant. but this film didnt work for me. some good build up scences and scares but when your main villain is trees and a bit of wind? Can do better.
maybe you're right. maybe shyamalan should forget about making anything original and just stick to typical story lines with typical villains. that would be much better.
every line and actor seemed to be robotic and done without conviction. If the acting had been better then ya maybe it would've been slightly better. My friend i went to see it with screamed PIECE OF SHIT at the credits. I'm sorry M.Night but when you put yourself in the movie as the dude on the phone that has no lines and no part in the movie like that's trying too hard unless it was a joke then its all good lol. I really wanted to like this one I really did i don't get how people liked it.
agreed with Nyro. I love M. Night and all his work. I heard the reviews and wanted to like it thinking people were just giving it a bad rap just because its a weird movie. But it is probably one of the worst movies i've ever seen. Ok the premise is good. I don't know if he was trying to make a B Movie and that was just part of the style of the movie or something. I love mark Wahlberg as an actor but it was like none of the actors at all in the film had even made an attempt to act.
Guys, honestly I am a huge fan of Shyamalan's work, until I saw this shit. Trailer looked great...but the movie is absolute trash 60s horror flick. All the action happens in the first few minutes and the rest is pretty obvious in terms of what is actually 'happening.' The dickhead even allows the scenes, where the microphone dips into view, make the edit. Night even said 'to just laugh at it,' on the red carpet. His words. Can't believe the ass just sits there and doesn't tell anyone how shit
M. Night is an active director that loves to experiment, so he's not the lazy B-movie / mediocre sort.
His films are so delicate and intricate that they often get the wrong output to audiences who are looking for a mere action-packed, tongue-in-cheeck-style dialogue with a linear simple plot.
I do not no why so many people knock this guy! he is probably one of the most original directors and film makers today, all i can think of why people seem to hate him is they don't understand his ideas, his questions he asks in his films. just because he doesn't have huge explosions and slow motion scenes with bullets doesn't mean his work is bad at all! some people are so thick.
M Night my favorite director but for him to make an R rated horror movie just doesn't seem right. I hope he doesn't abandon his pg13 style of movies. He's still my favorite director though :)
aha...ok. i see that many of you disagree with my comment. anyways, i got the same reaction from my others too...believe me when i say, ppl don't really enjoy M Night movies especially this one. Well, upon seeing your comments i think he didn't do too well of a job. It was more of personal feeling i got from the movie, it was good at times throughout. But...i agree that he could do better.
I know the critic has to be nice about it but pushing Mark Wahlberg's emotional limits?? Seriously ??????? Mark Wahlberg had one of the worst performances I've ever seen and definately the worst of the year.
A movie doesn't NEED a twist to be good. But that is M's gift. In Village he scared the hell out of us with something he specifically told us we did not need to be afraid of. In 6th he led us by the hand for an entire movie only to show us at the end we'd tread a completely different path. Here, no such quality storytelling occurred. We were not scared, we were startled. It's easy to startle an audience by having things leap out at them. It's easy to horrify with grotesque imagery.
This movie is a HUGE miss regardless of whether or not M was being serious about it. It almost seemed like he was trying to spoof himself but doing it very poorly. Unfortunatly, based on what I've read and seen... I think he WAS being serious which is just awful. There was NO subtlety in this movie at all and his oblate political pontificating and finger wagging was beyond annoying. Take some time off M and reacquant yourself with the writer of The Sixth Sense cause THAT guy knows his stuff.
What exactly were these twists, please? This movie was completely linear. It was monotone from beginning to end. There was no big reveal. There was no twist.
there was no twist...just bc it is m. night, that doesnt mean there has to be a twist. Personally, i thought the movie was brilliant..he got me and my friends talking, and half the movie i had my hands over my mouth, gasping for air bc i was so horrified/scared for the characters.. it was an intense movie experience..alot of fun too. you laughed when you didnt expect too, and you were cringing the whole movie. i think he knew exactly what kind of film he wanted to make.
honest to god, i dont know if addie is kidding or not...this movie was so poorly done...there were no twists, it was not thrilling at all nor were there "psychological chills"...i mean did you even see the movie?
its funny how M. Night said this movie was surprisingly easy to make...do you know why? because it was simply not well done. It is very easy to make a piece of shit, like this one. It is easy to show people killing themselves with no real story...ive taken shits with a better climax
maynard, this is the mistake u and many critics make. Just cos m night didnt make a twist DOESNT mean its a bad movie. He is storyteller. Each movie will be different. He wont always do a twist. U have to accept all his movies as an individual movie. Unbreakable has nothin to do with 6th sense. Signs has nothin to do with unbreakbale etc. Also, as a creative filmmaker, he knows if he always does the TWIST, it becomes cheap and predictable. The happenin wasnt great but it was enjoyable.
i hate how everyone is bashing this movie. It's actually a very clever and witty idea. M. Night is a great filmmaker and he doesn't deserve all of the haters out there to bash his movies. If Spielberg or Scorsesse diected this everyone would prasie it.
I personally don't understand why critics are giving it such a low rating. Expectations somehow have been twisted to think that all M Night wants to do is scare the audience. The movie has nearly as many beautiful metaphors and symbols as Signs did (which fit it's name). The dialogue to me seemed a little out of place but if you look at his influences such as Hitchcock, it is styled very similarly to some of his scripting, but without all the swagger. it's a success in my book..
well said nessmann. People have this mentality "i want all m nights films to be like 6th sense. with a TWIST. If theres no tiwst, its crap". They dont realise mnight wont always do a silly twist. He wants to make other movies too. The public are bein far too harsh. If this was made by another guy, they would have taken the good points and said it was a unique scary movie. But they KNEW it was mnight so despite bein scared, they took the bad points and said it was a crap movie. Media brainwashing
this movie was not scary first of all. It was stupid and a 10 year old could have made this movie. The acting was terrible. I was shocked that anyone could make this bad of a movie without actually trying to make it that bad. The script was hilariously bad. Who the hell talks like these people in this movie? The idea for this movie was good but the execution was not there. The director was able to take an oscar nominated actor and turn his performances into one of the worst performances ever
People in the cinema were terrified. More so than the other useless teen horrors. The script wasnt perfect but good enough. M night purposely executes his films 50's b movie style. Its intentional. And all the parts that people laughed at was supposed to be funny. Mark speaks to the plants, mark tells zooey about the pharmacist girl, kids callin that guy inside house bitch and pussy etc. That was intentional humour by m night and somehow, people thought it was unintentional.
as i have observed, people take the few bad points from m night movies and judge it overall as bad. But if the same movie had been from a different guy, people would take the few good points and say it was good. They know it was his movie so were being unfairly critical.
As far as i saw, people laughed when they were supposed to and screamed when they were supposed to. Now that to me means m night done his job well. I look forward to his future projects.
you must be right. I just am too stupid to get the advanced movie. I must just be a stupid person that only likes movies with gunfire and explosions. I watch movies all the time I am not a child DO NOT TREAT ME LIKE AN IDIOT YOU ARE CLEARLY IN THE MINORITY ON THIS TOPIC. I will say that I get everything little detail about this movie I get the humor and the B movie bullshit. I get the the post 9/11 scared of your neighbors attitude the movie was trying to portray.
Just because a movie has good points doesn't make a good movie. For example if I make a movie where the main message is the world should be peaceful and we should all care and love each other. That is a good point however it would make a bad movie if it were not directed, written, or acted well. The happening was a terribly made movie that resonated with almost nobody except the pathetic people that won't admit M. Night is not a good director. Also don't tell me people were scared in this movie
i know that good message does not mean a good film. I am one of the few that argues strongly on this point in movie debates. But the happenin was a good film with a good message. Well written and well directed.
But i now realised u are not keen on m night films and his style is not to ur taste. So any movie he makes u will not like. I love his movies and is my fav filmmaker.
I was never scared throughout this film because every time a tense moment might have occured the acting and writing was so laughably stupid the tense visuals could not cause any real frightening moment. Please don't tell me I don't get this movie because I do its not hard to get. However, every message this film tried to convey was again ruined by a sub standard director. Just because the movie was different than most movies does not make it good.
If you want to see a good different kind of movie watch christopher Nolan's film Memento that will teach real creative filmaking at its best. As for now shut the fuck up and stop defending this fucktard of a director. HE FAILED ADMIT IT
hehe you're so funny.you're funny man, really.the fact that you're here talking about the movie is the fact that you're already addicted to it.all of you,it's just the way you people like to spend time, acting llike you're smart..."oh that movie is stupid bla bla bla,i know what is a good movie bla bla bla"...oh god it's so funny
Oh I must be kidding. I must be kidding. Are you stupid or something? Did you really just say I must be kidding? You are the one who is fucking kidding have not seen the reviews for this piece of trash? Yeah nobody is on your side it SUCKED. It is an accepted fact by the mass populace. Wow I am still shocked that you just said that I mus t be kidding. I cannot believe you have the gull to say something like that when virtually nobody agrees with you. Did you really just say I must be kidding?
story line and symobolism are the only decent things in this movie. he has some cool ideas but he needs to reattend film school. this is by far the worst acting i have ever seen in a movie, dialogue is retarded, editing is horrid, and as far as ending, it's as stupid as the rest of the movie. You never care for the characters, no cool plot twists, theres absolutely nothing "good" about this movie. much worse than anything he has ever made, unless lady in the water is truely that horrible....
I don't see why you attack the editing. The editing was fine. And, in fact, the acting made me think about what people might actually do in situations that this movie introduced. I honestly, truly believe that the only reason people are complaining about this film is either 1. they're following a trend, or 2. Shayamalan's reputation isn't so great since Lady in the water(which WAS bad). If signs had come out last friday, i bet the dialouge, story, and pacing would have been just as criticized.
unfortunately 90% of the public that see this movie will not get it. the movie is about what is happening to society, our society, we are bombarded on a daily basis, by way of corporate media, constant spin of lies to keep us in fear.Terrorists, global warming and other mass hysteria. The movie also pokes fun at americas addiction to stupid movies with bad acting. If you watch closely you will see a microphone purposely drop in the center of the screen on several occasions. The jokes on you
The movie was a train wreck. BUT... it was fun to watch. The dialogue was absolutely ridiculous. And because the writing was bad, the acting was even more odd. But the simple fact that M Night was earnest about this movie (as it appears by this interview) makes my laughter during the film that much more profound. I highly recommend this movie! You will laugh-out-loud.
this movie sucks big time. dont waste your money on this crap. shyalaman has not made a decent movie since sixth sense. he should stick to bollywood and NEVER make another movie in hollywood again. i hope it flops at the box office
M. Night seems like a nice guy. But he needs to seriously look at his early movies and see how far he's fallen.

every line and actor seemed to be robotic and done without conviction. I really wanted to like this one I really did i don't get how people liked it.
chrishighlandermcleo 3 years ago
agreed with Nyro. I love mark Wahlberg as an actor but it was like none of the actors at all in the film had even made an attempt to act.
chrishighlandermcleo 3 years ago
Guys, honestly I am a huge fan of Shyamalan's work, until I saw this shit. Trailer looked great...but the movie is absolute trash 60s horror flick. All the action happens in the first few minutes and the rest is pretty obvious in terms of what is actually 'happening.' The dickhead even allows the scenes, where the microphone dips into view, make the edit. Night even said 'to just laugh at it,' on the red carpet. His words. Can't believe the ass just sits there and doesn't tell anyone how shit
1Nyro 3 years ago
M. Night is an active director that loves to experiment, so he's not the lazy B-movie / mediocre sort.
His films are so delicate and intricate that they often get the wrong output to audiences who are looking for a mere action-packed, tongue-in-cheeck-style dialogue with a linear simple plot.
This guy ain't no lazy filmmaker, baby!

that`s right his movies are different and they are good and they are always a good option in the movie theater

I do not no why so many people knock this guy! he is probably one of the most original directors and film makers today, all i can think of why people seem to hate him is they don't understand his ideas, his questions he asks in his films. just because he doesn't have huge explosions and slow motion scenes with bullets doesn't mean his work is bad at all! some people are so thick.
ollymcguirk 3 years ago
Of course I saw it. In both senses. Literally, and in the way that you obviously can't 'see' movies.

It's easy to horrify with grotesque imagery.
zilibabwei 3 years ago
This movie is a HUGE miss regardless of whether or not M was being serious about it. It almost seemed like he was trying to spoof himself but doing it very poorly. Unfortunatly, based on what I've read and seen... I think he WAS being serious which is just awful. There was NO subtlety in this movie at all and his oblate political pontificating and finger wagging was beyond annoying. Take some time off M and reacquant yourself with the writer of The Sixth Sense cause THAT guy knows his stuff.
zilibabwei 3 years ago 2
M Night did a great job with this movie...i loved it. thrilling and filled with twists and psychological chills. good work M Night!
addie435618 3 years ago
What exactly were these twists, please? This movie was completely linear. It was monotone from beginning to end. There was no big reveal. There was no twist.
zilibabwei 3 years ago
there was no twist...just bc it is m. night, that doesnt mean there has to be a twist. Personally, i thought the movie was brilliant..he got me and my friends talking, and half the movie i had my hands over my mouth, gasping for air bc i was so horrified/scared for the characters.. it was an intense movie experience..alot of fun too. you laughed when you didnt expect too, and you were cringing the whole movie. i think he knew exactly what kind of film he wanted to make.
dakotasjp03 3 years ago
honest to god, i dont know if addie is kidding or not...this movie was so poorly done...there were no twists, it was not thrilling at all nor were there "psychological chills"...i mean did you even see the movie?
its funny how M. Night said this movie was surprisingly easy to make...do you know why? because it was simply not well done. It is very easy to make a piece of shit, like this one. It is easy to show people killing themselves with no real story...ive taken shits with a better climax
maynardjkisgod 3 years ago
maynard, this is the mistake u and many critics make. The happenin wasnt great but it was enjoyable.
kingfbi 3 years ago
i hate how everyone is bashing this movie. It's actually a very clever and witty idea. M. Night is a great filmmaker and he doesn't deserve all of the haters out there to bash his movies. If Spielberg or Scorsesse diected this everyone would prasie it.

I don't wanna convince you to love this movie. In the contrary, what did you not like in this movie? Personnally, I think it's a pretty good movie
225julien 3 years ago
I personally don't understand why critics are giving it such a low rating. Expectations somehow have been twisted to think that all M Night wants to do is scare the audience. The movie has nearly as many beautiful metaphors and symbols as Signs did (which fit it's name). The dialogue to me seemed a little out of place but if you look at his influences such as Hitchcock, it is styled very similarly to some of his scripting, but without all the swagger. it's a success in my book..
Nessmann 3 years ago 2
well said nessmann. Media brainwashing
kingfbi 3 years ago
this movie was not scary first of all.
HEATFAN38586757 3 years ago
People in the cinema were terrified. More so than the other useless teen horrors. The script wasnt perfect but good enough. M night purposely executes his films 50's b movie style. Its intentional. And all the parts that people laughed at was supposed to be funny. Mark speaks to the plants, mark tells zooey about the pharmacist girl, kids callin that guy inside house bitch and pussy etc. That was intentional humour by m night and somehow, people thought it was unintentional.
kingfbi 3 years ago
as i have observed, people take the few bad points from m night movies and judge it overall as bad. But if the same movie had been from a different guy, people would take the few good points and say it was good. They know it was his movie so were being unfairly critical.
As far as i saw, people laughed when they were supposed to and screamed when they were supposed to. Now that to me means m night done his job well. I look forward to his future projects.
kingfbi 3 years ago
you must be right.
HEATFAN38586757 3 years ago
Just because a movie has good points doesn't make a good movie. For example if I make a movie where the main message is the world should be peaceful and we should all care and love each other. That is a good point however it would make a bad movie if it were not directed, written, or acted well. The happening was a terribly made movie that resonated with almost nobody except the pathetic people that won't admit M. Night is not a good director. Also don't tell me people were scared in this movie
HEATFAN38586757 3 years ago
i know that good message does not mean a good film. I am one of the few that argues strongly on this point in movie debates. But the happenin was a good film with a good message. Well written and well directed.
But i now realised u are not keen on m night films and his style is not to ur taste. So any movie he makes u will not like. I love his movies and is my fav filmmaker.
kingfbi 3 years ago
I was never scared throughout this film because every time a tense moment might have occured the acting and writing was so laughably stupid the tense visuals could not cause any real frightening moment. Please don't tell me I don't get this movie because I do its not hard to get. However, every message this film tried to convey was again ruined by a sub standard director. Just because the movie was different than most movies does not make it good.
HEATFAN38586757 3 years ago
If you want to see a good different kind of movie watch christopher Nolan's film Memento that will teach real creative filmaking at its best. As for now shut the fuck up and stop defending this fucktard of a director. HE FAILED ADMIT IT

hehe you're so funny.you're funny man, really.the fact that you're here talking about the movie is the fact that you're already addicted to it.all of you,it's just the way you people like to spend time, acting llike you're smart..."oh that movie is stupid bla bla bla,i know what is a good movie bla bla bla"...oh god it's so funny

Wow I am still shocked that you just said that I mus t be kidding. I cannot believe you have the gull to say something like that when virtually nobody agrees with you. Did you really just say I must be kidding?
HEATFAN38586757 3 years ago
story line and symobolism are the only decent things in this movie. he has some cool ideas but he needs to reattend film school. this is by far the worst acting i have ever seen in a movie, dialogue is retarded, editing is horrid, and as far as ending, it's as stupid as the rest of the movie. You never care for the characters, no cool plot twists, theres absolutely nothing "good" about this movie. much worse than anything he has ever made, unless lady in the water is truely that horrible....
Xanderblue 3 years ago
I don't see why you attack the editing. The editing was fine. And, in fact, the acting made me think about what people might actually do in situations that this movie introduced. I honestly, truly believe that the only reason people are complaining about this film is either 1. they're following a trend, or 2. Shayamalan's reputation isn't so great since Lady in the water(which WAS bad). If signs had come out last friday, i bet the dialouge, story, and pacing would have been just as criticized.
harvesterofshadow 3 years ago
unfortunately 90% of the public that see this movie will not get it. the movie is about what is happening to society, our society, we are bombarded on a daily basis, by way of corporate media, constant spin of lies to keep us in fear.Terrorists, global warming and other mass hysteria. The movie also pokes fun at americas addiction to stupid movies with bad acting. If you watch closely you will see a microphone purposely drop in the center of the screen on several occasions. The jokes on you

5th - The Happening
6th - Lady in the Water

The movie was a train wreck. BUT... it was fun to watch. The dialogue was absolutely ridiculous. And because the writing was bad, the acting was even more odd. But the simple fact that M Night was earnest about this movie (as it appears by this interview) makes my laughter during the film that much more profound. I highly recommend this movie! You will laugh-out-loud.
