After thinking real hard, I liked the ending. The reason Ben didn't go into the church is because he was a bad boy along with ana lousea and michael who have to become the whispering people in the jungle unable to move on. I already heard the theory that they were all dead but I didn't expect it to be true. I'm happy they all are together in the end. That was a big revelation when we learn that the "lash sideways were actually after they all died. They reunite & go to heaven together in the end

@relmmih6 the show said it all "what ever happened, happened"... Everything that happened on the island happened; They crashed, time-traveled, fought the "others" etc. Then Jack saved the remaining few and then died in the bamboo field... The flash-sideward (the reality where they didn't know each other) was Purgatory. They all had to remember their actual lives before they could "move on". That answer ur questions?

@relmmih6 In the "present reality" where jack died in the bamboo field, Hurley did take over and looked after the island. He's not really protecting it from anyone in particular, just anyone who tried to turn off the light thingy... Ben not goin in the church bit i dunno about. If my memory serves me correctly, i think he said he would go in (i.e. move on) but he had some things to think about

@relmmih6 well that whole time-line wasn't really @ a particular time. It was like this holding place "purgatory" where time didn't really apply. Ben and Hurley talking outside the church took place in that holding place so they were already dead. So u were meant to take it that they both lived for a long time after Jack died and then outside the church they were reminiscing about their lives protecting the Island... Is kinda confusing, i know :p

@tatie90 Purgatory was a thing the Church invented. Was a place in between Heaven and Hell. Basically that reality was created by the main characters so that they could find each other again because they were such a huge part of their lives and so that they could all move on to the afterlife together. All the things that happened in that reality e.g. Jack having a son etc were just so that the characters cud work out their problems i.e. Jack havin Daddy issues, Charlie finding meanin to his life

I think the series finally is going to be that desmond hume gets everyone on a plane and fly the plane back to the island while the same time the people on the island get on plane fly it into the other plane causing everyone to go back to normal
