  • One of the few guys I respect the most on this planet. Long live Robert Crumb!

  • DiIikjikm mkiniemkt.dneo.sttzn.ok

  • Something about his voice reminds me of Rainman.

  • Thanks for putting this superb excerpt from the film up on you tube!

  • THE BEST...#1

  • i would like to know who made the song.

  • @cirq The Last Kind Words-Geechie Riley

  • Very interesting film. Such a bizarre guy and a strange family.

  • what brush is he using in the beginning?

  • who can dislike this video?

  • His work kinda reminds me of punk rock artist Raymond Pettibon...but of course Robert was drawing before him.

  • this lazy prick cant even get his ass down here to Sydney opera house because he needs a wank that day. massive refunds. bastard i hope these artists lose some $ for their fuckups.!

  • He got out of Dodge way before anybody else.

  • aline talks just like him

  • @shroomduke You're spot on there. I wish it was the same in the UK (well sort of ish).

  • crumb or nostalgia for the rest of the world

  • I've been reading this guy's comics since I was a kid (bad parents, I guess), and I've got to say, he seems like much less of a creep than I always imagined.

  • Thats a nice piece of music he listenes to there. Does anyone know the name of it?

  • an amazing illustrator Robert Crumb...Keep On Trucking, for eveah!!

  • can anyone tell me the pen he's using, or what type of pen, at 0:25?

  • @PhiI93 i'm pretty sure it is a micron pen. hope it helps. :)

  • I really do relate with R. Crumb, and share his take in Jelly Roll Morton.

  • @Morahman7vnNo2 Jekky Roll is so awesome.

  • She married him for money no self respecting girl would date this nerd.

  • @guerillachan20 If she was in it for the money why not just divorce him, get half his stuff. Or better yet, she could have gone after someone who actually has lots of money instead of some nerd who draws funny pictures. Because making cartoons isn't exactly a lucrative vocation.

  • @FuttBucker667 This guy is a fucking weirdo not my opinion but opinion of many other people in my class if he gets ass then he just fucking blew darwins theory out water: survival of fittest, I mean. He is obviously not fit to be with a girl but I guess some girls are just retarded.

  • @guerillachan20 I don't see what that has to do with Darwin's Theory, as it applies to species who can best adapt to their surrounding, but whatever. Maybe Crumb just has a huge dick and that's why she hangs around. After all that the only thing girls really care about.

  • @FuttBucker667 She married another guy very young and they both attended college in Arizona..Then she got tired of her boring husband, lived a hippie lifestyle, slept with countless people, hooked up with a bad ass/ self destructive cowboy, then she moved up to S.F. with some woman..At that point(around 23 years old) she meets Crumb..Now how the hell does a woman living that lifestyle become INSTANTLY attracted to R. Crumb??? FAME..

  • @apollo792 I think as I recall Aline thought Crumb was cute when he was first introduced to her, and they first hooked up because of a character he created called 'Honeybunch Kaminsky'

Some people are just made for each other, besides if money power & fame were the sole reason she hooked up with Crumb, why didn't she dump him like a bad habit when the I.R.S came down on him hard in the 1970s and they were both just about at the end of their rope?

  • @cha5 He still had his fame, and for a lot of women fame is an aphrodisiac, more powerful than money..I should rephrase it "Money, power, OR fame"..

  • @apollo792 That's an observation Crumb himself has made about fame, but I don't think it holds in Aline's case, anymore than the argument that she remained his wife for over thirty years and had a child with him solely because of his fame, after they married Crumb's "fame" didn't do all that much for her, they were both in poverty because of the I.R.S and other factors and they made little to no money on comix like 'Dirty Laundry', Crumb was at this point considering leaving the country.

  • @apollo792 He still had his fame, and for a lot of women fame is an aphrodisiac, more powerful than money..I should rephrase it "Money, power, OR fame"..

  • @FuttBucker667" It doesn't matter how hideous I look, I've got MONEY, POWER, and FAME."

    -Tom Leykis

  • @guerillachan20

What money? Go look up Crumb's original "Fritz" movbie deal, it's available online. That is NOT much money for a major motion picture.

Opinions founded in ignorance and the people that spew them...always entertaining.

  • @guerillachan20 Revenge of the nerds. Men visual. Women audio.

  • the short history of america is just brilliant!! wow

  • Found out about him when i was like 17 years old, in many ways he shaped my taste for art. Glorious artist.

  • Hip Pocket Theater did a great play about you R. I was hoping you might show up. Never was the same after your commix..Or something..You prolly didn't get paid for that either. Thanks for being so strange.

  • Does anyone know the name of the song he starts playing on the record player at 4:35?

  • @nicklapman Geeshie Wiley's Last Kind Words.

  • @Chaduke Aesome, thanks

  • Anyone know what kind of pen he works with 0:10?

  • @CERNOBE At 0:10 that's a brush, and then i think he uses some kind of rapidograph pen. He stated on an interview that he uses a Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph pen, 0,0 (very thin).

  • @CERNOBE It's simple pen and ink. Old style.

  • @CERNOBE Sorry I took a second look it is a rapidograph pen.

  • This movie is extremely good. And I love the music he plays for us as well.

  • little man in a big sexy world.

  • My hero!

  • this guys hilarious

  • Damn...what's wrong with this world man? Only 71,456 views...this guy deserves a billion. What is wrong with people!!!

  • Good Video.. But Crumb diserves his whole 2 hour documentary...

  • this guy is awesome but i got to admit...the 'drawing high school girls' kinda creeped my out X_X

  • kinda creeped yaa out X_X HUH?

  • SIN COMENTARIOS

  • I have to buy this! Criterion Collection bitches.

  • What's the one at 5:41 called?

  • My brother fainted while watching this movie. It had that big of an impact on him.

  • @Theakker3 lol

  • That was great! I wish we could get the whole documentary "crumb" here on youtube. I admire Crumb's artwork, and it's social commentary, and it's honesty especially his comics that deal with Robert and his obsessions.

  • does anybody know what song, artist or disc is he listenning to??? i love it!

  • @rociopitio It's "Last Kind Words" by Geeshie Wiley.

  • @rociopitio Geeshie Wiley singing "Last Kind Word Blues". I discovered it here, too.

  • @rociopitio Geeshie Wiley's "The Last Kind Word Blues" is the record he plays during the cartoon slideshow.

  • I own this doc and watch it often.

  • Black Patti

  • What a great 78's collection he have. Plus he is a genious!

  • Where can i found the full movie? Feels like i've been looking for it for ages!

  • @OtakuPraetorius It's called "Crumb" you should look it up on the Criterion Collection catalogue, they just released an awesome dvd version of it

  • This man's art saved my life!

  • Is Robert Crumb autistic?

  • @HuggiMa no he is the product of a highly dysfunctional family, massive ammounts of LSD and years of introverted self loathing :)

  • I love Crumb, he gives us Omega males a good image.

  • I like this guy's personality. lol

  • One of my fac films.

  • Robert Crumb is KING. My greatest inspiration. Check out my animations on my site.

  • what's the name of the song in this clip? that one was my favorite

  • @NicktheBarber31 Hi. The song is called "Last Kind Words" by Geeshie Wiley.

    M.K.

  • @the215renaissanceman Thank you.

  • It makes me wonder if R.Crumb is friends with cartoonist Bill Watterson{Calvin and Hobbes creator}

  • I don't think so, but I could be wrong, I think both men (Crumb and Watterson) aren't all that sociable with other cartoonists, Crumb knows other Underground and some alternative comic artists but not all that many "above ground" artists and Watterson doesn't really have much if any contact at all with most cartoonists since he retired from Calvin & Hobbes,

that's not to say they don't respect each others work, just that they likely don't know each other personally.

  • Like I said though I could be completely wrong,

Crumb has met many different cartoonists and cartoon artists throughout his lifetime like Charles Schultz (Peanuts) Chester Gould (Dick Tracy)

    Gil Kane (classic superhero artist)

    and lots of others.

  • This Crumb movie is so fascinating, I've watched it many times. I wonder if any woman could ever be as obsessed with drawing?

  • @jossr2010

Well there's Aline Kominsky of course,

    Carol Lay, Lynda Barry,

Crumb's own daughter, and some other respected women comic artists, now whether they reach the level of a Robert Crumb in obsessing

over their artwork? that's another question altogether.

  • A terry zwigoff film, produced by David Lynch and its just called crumb. A great documentary!

  • I was completely enthralled by this clip. I'd love to see the rest of this movie.

And Crumb's got a good taste in music.

  • I've seen the movie! It's great! Robert's biggest influence was his brother charles who drew these off the wall, outlandish comics when they were kids! If you like this, you'll love the movie!

  • Geeshie Wiley- Last Kind Word Blues 1930

  • Anyone know what is the title of the song that he puts on, and who sings it?

  • CREEPER!!!

  • Total creeper, ha ha

  • Naomi Wilson is cute!!! where is she!!??

  • It's Geeshie Wiley. Last Kind Words. My band covers it..eerie, wonderful song..

  • Gee, thanks, man. Good luck with the song..

  • Yeah, you do a beautiful rendition to it. I love Geeshie Wiley too.

  • cool! I wondered what that was called! Thanks!

  • Yeah! What`s the name of the record he is playing? Pleeez? Yes?

  • Thank you for the upload, possibly the whole documentary will be availabe, someday.

  • I remember the part where his brother filled out the art school application and it was all trippy. Too bad he killed himself, just another undiscovered talent.

  • An inspiring artist! This video quality is excellent for YouTube too.

  • oh man. the record he's playing is wonderful. who is it? what album is it?

  • Does anybody know the name of the piano song its played over the "A History of America" drawings? Sounds like Jay McShann or some kind of piano blues. Anybody?

  • Heard fragments of 'Slowdrag', by Scott Joplin

  • Slowdrag, by Scott Joplin

  • I was a kid when my older sister started bringing home Crumb cartoons. I read them as soon as I could. I'm an artist now and he had a huge influence on me. This man is a genius.

  • Nice Fellini reference in the video title... especially because this documentary is self-reflexive and deals with the struggles of artists in honestly depicting events from their lives.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that 'Crumb' is the '8 1/2' of documentary films...but it certainly deals with some of the same issues.

  • thanks for your comment

8 1/2 is the length of this video in minutes.

8 mins and 40 secs to be exact

  • @mercurymonterey I don't know why that made me laugh so hard

  • @VforVideo lol, fail

  • @VforVideo probably the most improbable stretch for anything, ever.

  • I'm having a really hard time finding this movie, if someone has a link I'd appreciate it.

  • This entire documentary is uber brilliant.

  • He seems to be a character created by himself.

  • why did they go to france, must be for the healthcare and Freedom. I hear in France the Government is afraid of the peope instead of like America where the People are afraid of the government....

We have millions of Americans loosing their homes to greedy bankers & we all sit on our asses hoping it will never happen to us, we should do like the French & get out the gillitine & investigate every member of Congress to see if they've taken bribe money from corporations... chop chop chop...

  • you have no idea what your talkin about lol...

  • Realy, enlighten us, please! I have no problem with being wrong or being told i'm wrong, so, Don't just say "your wrong" share your knowledge, tell us why I'm wrong, maybe I will learn something.

    Thanks

  • haha. thumbs up doesn't do this justice

  • @shroomduke This comment is truly embarrassing and ignorant. Your opinion is not valid.

  • the drawing at 5:45 is FUCKED UP. well, so are many after that one actually

  • saw this movie YEARS ago on IFC when i was 14... i loved it so much, if anyone wants to see it, there is a copy on DVD at blockbuster. i see it at mine, it's gotta be in other stores too.

  • This documentary is a masterpiece

  • what a talent. did anybody capture the times better than crumb? the best artist to come out of the usa in the past few decades.

  • love that shot with the shadow.

    perfect

  • hisvorpalswords r crumb doesn't know what he's talking about??? their his fucking characters!!!

  • thank you.

  • Bakshi SCHLOCK? I don't think Crumb really knows what he's talking about there.

  • You make an interesting point. I guess Bakshi (and others) was a schlockmeister to Crumb because Bakshi went ahead with making an animated movie based on his material without his permission. Crumb's wife gave them permission without Crumb's knowledge, so the story goes. Schlockmeister means a seller of inferior goods. I guess Bakshi's a schlockmeister to Crumb because he had no say about how his material was to be interpreted and presented. Crumb did say, NO, when they approached him about it.

  • One of my favourite films.

  • What actually happened to Charles Crumb?

  • Suicide. What the details are on it, I don't know. He was a pretty depressed person.

  • Oh, ok. I was just wondering that, you know.

Suicide can't loose problems of depression. It's so bad to do it.

    Like Charles Crumb did.

  • Well, I think it was an overdose of his own medication. Not sure. But I do know Terry Zwigoff, the maker of the Crumb documentary, did worry that his film may have contributed to Charles' suicide, which happened about a year after the filming. Hard to say. Anyway, it's a very tragic thing. Robert Crumb always said that "Charles was cleverer and funnier than I was." But poor Charles just didn't have the wherewithal to deal with the real world. Kids, even teachers hated him.

  • You're right. I have the film on DVD, 1 of my favorite films ever.

I like also Maxon Crumb doing sitting on his bed of nails. Well, it's hurt, but I think it's cool.

Robert Crumb is such a very good talented artist ever.

  • Maxon Crumb was certainly an interesting character in the documentary. He's emaciated, lives like an enlightened ascetic, sits on a bed of nails, swallows a long cloth that comes out the other end, begs for his money, paints very disturbing art (people, today, are looking to buy his paintings), and likes to stalk and pull down the pants of young ladies in public places. Ha!

Yes, Robert Crumb is a great artist and social critic. Have you seen "Born Into This"--a documentary on C. Bukowski?

  • No, I never heard of it this movie.

    But I'm thinking of it.

  • I think you would find it interesting. Charles Bukowski is a very fascinating man and artist (a poet) like Crumb. I write poetry, myself. As a matter of fact, I have Bukowski's book, "The Captain Is Out To Lunch...," which Crumb illustrated. He captures Bukowski beautifully. Bukowski will seem to be a rough, mean sort of man at first, but inside, he is extremely kind and sensitive--a good man trying to understand "life."

Saw your drawings. Enjoyed them. Keep it going.

  • I love the film so much.

    Robert Crumb is great!

  • the documentary shows good stuff.

  • Was hopin' they'd show some of Charles Crumb, the teacher-brother one who got Robert started as an artist back in their childhood. I think Charles would've went on to great things if it wasn't for the mental illness that side tracked him. It's eerie because his increasing mental illness can be seen in his art.

    RIP, Charles.

  • You know Charles beat the shit out of crumb and forced him to draw everyday and make mini comics for him right?

  • Hi, mibbok. How you doin'? Yeah, Robert would not have made it without Charles. No way. "Charles said I had to do it..." he would say. This 1994 documentary is my favorite doc of all time. Ha, I love weirdos, and these are among the truest, the sweetest and very best! Love these souls dearly.

  • Any artists out there know why he is drawing on college ruled notebook paper instead of blank sheets? See time 3:48.

  • they DO give you lines..which can help with prespective and porportion...but i draw on scraps of paper from work that are only photocopyied on one side..it might just be that this guy ..who draws ALOT...is just using anything he can get his hands on..sorry no one has answered your question in 7 months mate.

    dave

  • The whole 78 rpm angle is quite absorbing.

  • Anyone know where i can see the entire doc. I saw it many years ago but would love to revisit it.

  • Mokeena video, Mokena, IL.

  • He comes across as a kind of sad, eccentric individual. A great artist, but a sad individual. Or maybe he just prefers life that way. Best of luck in the future to him.

  • che grande...

  • I love R.Crumb`s drawings : girls with big legs an hips spooked in my mind since i was 5.

  • I love this video, I'm obsessed with it, it's just so filled with inner commentary.

  • Watch the whole movie, best documentary about an artist I´ve ever had the chance to see.

  • NKA23, another good one is "The Line King" on Hirschfeld.

  • Yes lots of great "Crumb" video here on YouTube.

Gotta love it. Crumbs one-of-a-kind - I believe.

  • Imagine the energies, the ideas, nightmares and dreams born of someone else's imaginings hanging around this man...all begging to be born into physical existence...

  • "Spring, 2009

Robert has finished the Genesis project. It's 201 pages. He has also finished the Cover, the Introduction, the commentary (for the back sleeve) and also the Map, which will be in the beginning of the book. The book is soon going to production and it's planned to be released this fall."

  • Great I did not know that. Should be very interesting

  • The guy is a fascinating "character."

  • I saw the movie a few years back. He is interesting but his brothers are off the chart. See it if you have not seen it yet.

  • "off the charts" lol, who am I to know!

    "doodle me into bee-ing!"

  • I've got a comic insert he did in the 70's that was excellent, thats when i first knew of him.i treasue that book

  • A Mad Genuis

  • he has a great and special sensitivity... just like me! =D

  • Anyone seen what he look like recently? He was on BBC a few months ago; there was an exhibition in London. Man he's aged considerably since this was made. He's got completely white hair and a white beard and moustache.

In fact, he looks like a skinny version of Mr.Natural :)

    But whatever - he's a genius..!

  • This film, posted by you, just set up a time tunnel to my early youth, and remembering my love for this artist made me remember what road I am on today, and why. So, big favour done for me today, by you guys. I have to thank you.

  • Super movie...don't rent it...buy it.

  • He is simply brilliant.

  • what is that song from that old record he's playing???!!?

  • last kind word blues by geeshe wiley.

  • sick, twisted genius.......Crumb is the shit.

  • I can relate

  • makes me weep

  • The song is "Slow Drag" by Scott Joplin. Or maybe Slow Rag. One or the other.

  • what is that piano tune he is playing?

  • "A Real Slow Drag", Joplin.

  • Me to, OH GAWD!

  • roebrt crumb es un artista genial. bravo por él

  • This is a damn good movie. RENT IT!

  • awesome guy, i really like his art style
