Viggo said in an interview that he went into a bar somewhere (I think it was in Russia) and when the people saw the tattoos on his hands (the ones for the film, fake ones) they thought he was Russian mafia and wouldn't come near him until later when they realised he didn't speak a word of Russian

The ending of this movie was all wrong in my opinion. The nude fighting bathhouse scene is the climatic scene in the movie. The revelation that Nikolai is an undercover cop is rather anticlimatic. Then he doesn't get together with the the Watts character so that

is a let down. My take on the last fleeting scene where Nikolai is sitting in the restaurant is that he has become the head of the Russian mafia but at what price? Cronenberg weaked the plot by not expanding on that a little.
