Physical size mostly. Pit bikes are much smaller and were originally designed to ride around the "pits" of a dirt bike race since competition doesn't let you ride your race bike anywhere but the track. Pitbikes don't really come much higher than 125cc stock. Dirtbikes can have much larger engines and taller gearing for more speed.

@Minusthesum Well These bike can push a good 230 pound 5'9 man without a problem, these bike are geared low for power and can reach around 40mph depending on weight. Im thinking of buying one for myself and let me son grow into it. There very cheap $699 on tboltusa. com there alot of bike there and quad basically anything motorized and cheap.

you can normally tell if it is in Neutral if you can move the bike, if the bike is in first gear you will not be able to push it, you can only push it if it is in neutral. motocross bike gears run like this 6-5-4-3-2-N-1 (N = ovbiously standing for neutral, and is half click up from 1st gear.) i own a motocross bike but i think pit bikes are - 4-3-2-1-N (this gearbox having neutral at the bottom of the gears, so if you click your bike fully down it should be in Neutral
