... arguably, the finest aircraft ever built. I've known pilots who left passenger-jet airline pilot careers to fly DC3 cargo flights and stayed on- just to fly these planes! I hear tell there are pilot waiting-lists @ those carriers who have these venerable aircraft. Man, when you build something 'right.'... .
You can thank the founder of American Airlines for these planes. It was he who put them into use just before the war then had them converted for use in the Army air corps.
Yes this baby was ahead of it's time, better than a Junkers. A friend of mine was shoot down by a JU-88 over Yugoslovia in WW-2, he was flying for the OSS, fuek and explosives he parachuted to safty with a German patrol hot on his heels, the underground found him before the Nazis, the Red Horse Brigade.
i flew with it when it came for a visit to Geiteryggen (ENSN) airport :D
it was great! all though i almost lost all my money and my cell phone out of my pockets cuz the nose is pitched up on the ground XD!
PS. if somebody once lost their pilot-sunglases in this plane, i have them (found it during the "walk out of da plane" and tried to find my phone.....)
Being danish, I understand what the older fella is telling the about. A man, or... The former pilot of THIS C-47, which flew during the D-Day invasion, being reunited with his plane, and how he shed a tear when he came back to it, and he gave the plane a few strokes and pet her... That's a touching story
Yes, nice vid. I have ridden such an airplane only twice. First was from St Louis to Moline via Ozark Airlines and last from Rhein Main AB near Frankfurt to West Berlin and back in 1960. The C47 in Germany flew lower so my ears didn't suffer as they did with Ozark. I didn't know what to do because that was my first commercial flight and I was not informed.
It´s a beauty.

Gorgeus plane... Imagine that sound, + 2000.. .Maybe even more, and you've got D-Day C-47s carrying paratroopers flying over Normandy...
Just became a member of a club who fly DC-3 planes :) An ex USAAF C-47

I am going to take a ride with this airplane this summer. A ride over Eastern-Norway costs just 500 Norwegian kroner (about 100 $)
