1.8 GTi 8v, 16v and vr6 sucks, G60 uses same block so it can handle a great amount of power which means speed... Also got the best gearbox... 7200Rpm over 250km/h... :P Orginal prankster...
@215alessio I didn't know you lived in Belgium cos then I obviously wouldn't of asked. Actually that was my first choice but I'm not too sure anymore. It's a bit too big. My current one is a 1.3 Carb and even that already costs me £1200+.
@215alessio Don't really have that too much to spend and come to think of it even 1.6 is much more than I want, not to mention the £112 tax. I had my eye on a 1.3 SPI engine from a Polo G40 because that apparently can be used in a Golf Mk2 without changing the drive shafts and gearbox. The Polo G40 has the 020 4+E gearbox anyway.
Strangely enough my mate is 6,6ft and whilst he can drive my mk2 Golf no problem his legs smack off the lower dash in my Discovery! I see your point though as a big guy does look a bit daft in a Golf.
This ad was noteworthy since it was one of the first European TV commercials that was played in the North American markets without modification since the theme was deemed venerable enough by the client and agency.
What that advert says to me is only losers who gamble and cant get a hot gf drive Volkswagen Golfs. they should had him come out looking rich well off and approach the expensive cars then open the Golfs door and then the voice over says something about the value of the car to him than the price of it
@chris2009xx I think what the ad meant to say (but epically failed to) is that even though this guy has terrible bad luck and he can't count on anything to work for him, his Volkswagen never lets him down.
'The piece is called LYDIA by a man called Philip Monk
it was never released commercially and was originally sold to one of those music libraries now .. "on-line" music stores that catalogue music under "theme" for advert use, it was originally used in 1978 for a Marigold Glove advert.'
That is all the information I could find about this.
I can't believe some people don't get the point of this commercial - it shows a man who's lost everything because of his poor decisions, yet buying a Volkswagen was the only right one. As for the name: while all European spec cars used "GTI" except for the 1983-1991 mkII which used "GTi", and only mk6 models lost the Golf badging, Volkswagen has ALWAYS marketed the car as Golf GTi - lower case "i" ever since the car's introduction in 1976. In Europe, it is the generally accepted vernacular.
@TheAppleiMacKid a sex kitten is a young sexy woman. Married a sex kitten right before she became a cat, meaning he married a young sexy woman right before she got old. Moving into gold as the clever money moved out means he invested in gold when everyone else was selling theirs because the price was gonna fall.
Wow another moron and douchebag. This commercial wasn't made by VW but by an advertising company which they nominated. Apparently it wasn't that important at least in the UK. Any type of official literature from VW Deutschland never says GTi nor the badging of their cars.
haha ya topgears ad was brilliant, but this ad is clever, and its definitely not saying "losers drive VW GTI" (i cant tell if your joking are not) imo its saying that when everything is falling apart around you, you can always rely on one thing, the volkswagen GTI, because it wont break down :P
@smatticusin1408 've always wondered what the music is too. It's definitely one hundred percent not a Chopin nocturne, as some people have suggested. More likely, a piano concerto in the style of Poulenc or Ravel. I suspect it was commissioned by the advertising agency for the commercial.

@215alessio I was actually looking to buy a 1.6 GTD for my MK2 Golf, if you do want to sell it....you know where I am.

@zeetek007 and how you are going to ship it from belgium to the UK?
anyway I am not shure I want to sell it, I drove it for 14 years
215alessio 2 months ago
@zeetek007 I have a better Idea: usa a 1.9 TDi 90 hp from a golf mk3 and bult it in a golf mk2
you're gonna love it! It's the same block only with 15 Hp more and a mountain of torque more in the lower rpm regime
215alessio 2 months ago

zeetek007 2 months ago
@zeetek007 Trust me the 1.9 TDI 90HP from the golf mk3 is a similar block like the 1.6TDI 72 HP of the Golf 2.
if you do that take also the gearbox of the 1.9TDI
but you have to change also the drive shafts from the weels to the gearbox
and many other things

@carloscabrera08 No thats not correct. The lower case "i" was used cause of marketing ppl fuking up.
