  • Sayonara, Mauretania.

  • Mauretania the most famous ship in the world...-cough cough- Titanic is the most famous.

  • I'm wrong! Lol apologies! This was the first!!

  • Your forgetting this "Maury" was the second ship to bare that name and not the original Mauritania that was sister ship to the Lusitania and Aquitaina from the early 1900's

  • I don't know why sometimes Mauretania looks bigger than Olypic or Titanic!( And sometimes not)

  • I just wish she sank in route to the scrapyard, as least we would still have her.

  • the Mauritania and the Olympic were just victims of the Great Deepression and technology, if Titanic hadn't sank she would have met the same fate.

  • @MrLeadfoot01 better that they both sank so we could see them... Since people were all broke and had no cash.. Well I wish i could go back in time and go buy those ships and make them like the QM

  • Imperator was actually longer that the 882' Olympic Class ships by over 20 feet. When HAPAG found out that Cunard's new Aquitania was coming in at over 900', they added the amazing eagle figurehead to the bow to make sure their new Imperator was longer-even by only a few feet. The figurehead was severely damaged in a storm and was removed. Decorative scrollwork was installed in it's place.

  • is it me or are all the lifeboats gone??

  • @barrown1990 Many ships have most of their lifeboats removed prior to their last voyage to the scrappers. The boats can often be re-used on other ships.

  • Mauretania was the most famous liner when she was scrapped. Titanic was basically forgotten (and not spoken about) in the years following the sinking. Her famous twin sister Olympic was the flagship of the White Star Line until the ss Majestic came into service in 1922. The Olympic and Majestic (along w/Mauretania, Aquitania and Berengaria) were two of the most popular post-war liners on the Atlantic. Most of these ships were replaced by the new Queen Mary in 1936.

  • @lasuvidaboy "Berengaria"and" Majestic "were the ex-HAPAG steamers "Imperator" and "Bismarck". Number three of "Ballin's fat steamers" was "Vaterland" , "Leviathan" after WW I in American service.

Ballin- the HAPAG's chairman - competed with White Star to have the world's biggest though not fastest steamers with this trio. Like "Olympic", "Titanic" and "Britannic" they had steam engines plus turbines between the low-pressure cylinders and condensers. "Maury" and "Lucy" had turbines only.

  • @Oldsteamer2 The HAPAG trio had indeed two turbines and therefore four props, the White Star trio were triple screw. The boilers were of the lighter and more effective, yet more difficult to handle, watertube design, mostly used in warships only before the 1920s.

Though having more tons than the "Olympic", "Imperator" had a shorter hull. To overcome this drawback and to be doubtlessly the world's biggest and longest ship she was fitted with a huge figurehead- an eagle- which soon fell off.

  • there is only 1 way for a ship to retire and thats to sink down in the deep ocean, now thats should be allowed for all famous ships.

  • @TheIcelandicPatriot, wasting of resources should not be allowed to anyone.

  • @TheIcelandicPatriot what about as a musium like queen mary and qe2?

  • @barrown1990 Humm i gues i never thought of it like that sure why not, two ways then:)

  • very cool footage

  • one part of this wonderfull ship survives......i acuired one of her lifeboats....blessed or what.....anyone who knows of anymore that survives please get in touch

  • THAT ALLMOST ME CR

  • barsterds

  • RMS Mauretania was not the most famous ship in the world, RMS Titanic was

  • @starball23 Actually, Mauretania probably was the most famous ship back them along with Olympic, Aquitania and Lusitania. Only in the last 20-30 years did Titanic become as famous as she is now.

  • @HoennMaster Yeah, the Titanic was mostly forgotten by the mainstream until her wreck was discovered in 1985 or 86...

  • @HoennMaster Well, actually that is not true. When White Star Line announced the building of Titanic it was actually very popular back then since the White Star Line contained the largest Ocean Liners at the time. Which all three Olympic, Titanic and Brittanic were very close in measurment actually only inches away from each other when Mauretania and Lusitania were around 100 feet shorter. It just happens that after Titanic sank everyone had seemed to want to forget the accident.

  • @buffsummers22 Yeah she was popular then, but she's far more popular now.

  • @buffsummers22 When originally planned, the Olympic Class were to be the largest liners in the World but Germany and Cunard both build five liners that would surpass them. The 1913 52,000 ton Imperator had first class interiors that were far superior to anything seen on the Olympic Class ships. The Imperator's 1st class dining room, lounges and amazing two-deck 'Pompeiian Pool' were in a completely different league than the White Star ships. Cunard's 45,000 ton Aquitania was'nt far behind.

  • @lasuvidaboy That doesnt prove much of a point. Yeah she did have a pool but what ship will always be known for the first pool aboard, Titanic yeah exactly. That is just one arguement i have.

  • @buffsummers22 And I always thought that Olympic had the first permanent indoor swimming bath (as the pool was called onboard). Oh right-it was Olympic and not Titanic that actually had the first onboard swimming style bath. Many people don't seem to know that it was Olympic and not Titanic that received the majority of the press at the time of her building and maiden voyage. In comparison, Titanic started her maiden voyage almost un-noticed by the non-shipping press.

  • @HoennMaster And also dont bring up the speed of the Mauretania because to the passengers that did not matter, just how luxorious the ship was which Titanic and her sisters beat the Cunard line hands down in terms of elegance, but not speed. Which wouldnt you want to stay on a ship that was built more beautiful than the others?

  • we have the Technology to remake these Ships, the QE2 is almost Titanics Equal except the qe2 is smallerm they could replacate Titanic, they pretty much did for the movie

  • An older neighbor's father worked on the Mauretania. He was young at the time.He was just 19,a cabin boy or something. She said it was mostly when the ship's hull was painted white for cruises(as opposed to transportation).

  • Heartbreaking that, with the exception of the Queen Mary, we have never saved any of these beautiful old ships.

  • @QE2Caronia SS Rotterdam was recently restored..

  • It's sad that not a single one of the Atlantic four-stackers was saved for future generations. Even as late as 1950, they let the last one in world (Aquitania) go to a scrappers yard at Faslane in Scotland. That old saying is indeed true, you don't really appreciate what you have, until it's gone.

  • The man on the left at 0:21 is Captain A.T.Brown, my paternal Grandpa. We met once, when I was 6 months old. He later took The 'New' Mauretania on her maiden voyage to New Yok, and later in warpaint to Sydney & back to unescorted transatlantic voages as a troop carrier.

  • @Dude4Awesome Your such a fucking liar. STFU!

  • what is the song of the video?

  • @ejjagroovy: It's Auld Lang Syne.

  • I love Charles Pears' depiction of the Mauretania at Rosyth (once in the QM's second class smoking room, I believe).

  • I have the twin writing desk from the Mauretania. It came to me in 1983 as a gift from friends who were moving to a smaller house. My computer sits on it. It is still on good condition.

  • Iallways thought that the Britanic sank as the result of a german torpedo that had hit her,,,just as it had happened with the passenger ship lucinatina ,,,, I know the britanic served in ww1 as a hospital ship,,and the famouse french diver had found her,,

  • Bigger=disaster??? Olympic had a very successful career and Britannic was sunk by a mine during WW1. Hapag built 3-bigger ships than the Olympic Class starting in 1913 and in 1914, Cunard introduced the 45,000 ton Aquitania, one of the most popular ships to sail the Atlantic. The race for the biggest, fastest, grandest North Atlantic liners went on for decades after the Olympic Class of ships.

  • Mauretania and her sister Lusitania basically created the disasters of Britannic and Titanic. at the time the white star line was in the toilet in competition with cunard. so with these new speedy ships, succeeding Lucania and Campania as the atlantic speed queens, white star was in trouble. so in 1907 J.Bruce Ismay met with lord pirri and discussed three new ships. Olympic, Titanic, and Gigantic(Britannic). and planned to make them better. so making them better meant bigger liners. disaster.T-B

  • Rare Footage Der 5 Stars

  • sniff...

  • I wonder what happened to Mauritania.

Did she.... Better not say it now until I find out more about her.

  • they dismantled her

  • Faire Winds and Following Seas Mauretania.. /o.o

  • "we do say GOODBYE MAURETANIA"

last sentence of the speaker in the video...

  • Had Dubai not purchased QE2 (for 100 million dollars) she could have remained in service for a few more years. Some say she was not SOLAS 2010 compliant and she would have needed to be retired (scrapped) by 2010.

  • I believe that if it hadn't been for the rich arabs the QE2 would have been broken up also. I swear to God we can keep nothing and preserve it.

  • i feel sick!!!!!!!!!!!

  • why

  • HE SEEMS OLD AND SAD ... TIME TO DIE

  • FDR blasted the people responsible for her scrapping, preferring her to be taken out to sea and sunk, giving her a warrior's funeral instead of being broken down for use in toilets and other damn stuff.

  • She should have gotten one, the Olympic should have gotten one two. If I could save two ships, it would be her and the Olympic, may they both rest in peace. At least they are both in a place safe from the cutters tourch, and ice. where the sea is always good, and they are never low on fuel.

  • @OllieRamone I know the comment was 2 years ago but I'm kind of sentimental about my toilet.

  • @OllieRamone or preserve her and make a museum out of it

  • R.I.P Mauritania

  • Rest in peace Mauretania, rest in peace,

and save the SS United States.

  • my SHIP idiots this ship has to be saved

  • Same with the Olympic, we need time travel so we can go and save them.

  • Same with the Olympic, we need time travel so we can go back and save them.

  • @pieman97405 They say it will costs millions to build the steamships. So why don't rebuild them with Cruise-ship material? I am trying to get Cunard Line involved to rebuild the Olympic with cruise-ship material, she would costs then maybe 13 million dollars.

  • @Abricialio Cruise ship material is steal, it is just a higher quality then what was used in Olympic, but if you mean the interior, no, it would not be right to rebuild her as a floating casino with fake wood, if she gets rebuilt, it has to be done right, and as close to her original glory as modern safety standards allow. As for price, add 600 million to your 13, and you mean Carnival right? Cunard merged with them awhile back.

  • @pieman97405 I mean she should be rebuild with cruise-ship material (the steel outside) and the interior as her old glory. I don't get it why the prices of the steamships are so high, the steamships are still worth it to sail the oceans. The cruise-ships should thanks the steamships without them the Cruise-ships weren't here. :P

  • @Abricialio We can thank inflation for the high price ($1 today is worth 6 cents on the 1913 dollar), and I agree, they are more then worthy to sail the oceans, I'd rather sail on an Olympic class liner then one of those new casinos, but the people want that garbage, so you and me are not "up to date" but I would rather live in the past.

  • @pieman97405 too bad time travel isnt possible. i would go back and save titanic, britannic and olympic

  • @pieman97405 couldn't agree more we must save the olympic but titanic.... its best if we let history take its course

  • it's a shame the grand mauretania was scrapped.

  • My grandmother immigrated from Ireland on this ship in 1926!

  • Her name just sounds like wind chimes in a summer breeze... She was an awesome trip! One of the best trips in the 20 century.

  • lol

  • I traveled from Southampton to New York in early July 1960 on this grand old ship. Farewell.

  • No you didn't. It was scraped 25 years earlier.

I think you mean the 2nd Mauretania.

  • Hello Zebonka. Yes, you are right. I meant the 2nd Mauretania which was scrapped in 1965. A second look at the video shows a 4-stack liner which was the 1st Mauretania on its final voyage. Mauretania 2nd as I recall it was a 2-stack vessel. I was saluting the wrong vessel.

  • It's more than fair to say they both earned a salute or two!

  • There was a second Mauretania?? When? I bet there were was not a second Aquitania...

  • Yep; sorry I can't remember when she was launched, but she was scrapped in the 60's.

If you look for Mauretania videos, you'll come across the other ship eventually.

  • I love the Mauretania! Yes it is sad to see her go, and there is nothing we can do about her, but there are still some older ships around that need saving and protection, like the Nomadic. May the spirit of liners live on!

  • Thanks for posting this clip....wonderful!

  • I travelled on it!From New York to Southampton-long time ago!

  • Very good. You must be very proud. I am sure that it was a extraordinary experience.

  • Where's the whistles?

    HOOOT HOOOT

  • Farewell Maury! R.I.P

  • Goodbye Maury! I hate to see her go like this :(

  • me too

  • thus is my favorite ship!! Thanks for posting!!
