  • mta just got pwned

  • The T passenger: Man, how hard is it to electrify the lines?

  • @AmazinglyAgnostic It wouldn't be cheap. Even the Providence line has several MBTA only tracks which aren't electrified. They'd have to take care of all that and the Pawtucket layover yard to bring electric service to the T's busiest commuter rail line.

As stated elsewhere, the K-cars are rated for only 88 mph so electric locomotives wouldn't significantly increase the top speed but trains would accelerate better.

  • @Wingnutcaseman "They'd have to take care of the lines"< that's creating jobs. Plus, it would economically/financially stabilize the MBTA and the Boston area (aka transit-oriented development) as more people will feel comfortable to leave their cars at home to ride the purple T's.

  • @AmazinglyAgnostic Don't get me wrong, I think it would be a good idea to electrify this line. But with all the work that needs to be done and no interest expressed from the T so far, I just don't see it happening. Not soon, anyway.

  • @Wingnutcaseman smh, what are they waiting for?

  • LOL! POOR MBTA JUST CHUGGING ALONG WHILE THE NORHT EAST FLIES BY

  • what is with the single level car between the bilevels and engine? is it really nessisarry? why not another bilevel?

  • @jfsa380 Until they got their latest batch of Kawasaki bilevels, only the MBB single level coaches had restrooms in them. Today you'll see some consists of solid bilevels, but they still mix and match single level coaches on most trains.

  • Acela HHP-8

  • perfect timing...nice

  • Out of curiosity, what speed are the Kawasaki bi-levels rated for? Shame they don't operate any electrics. Great video!

  • @JuiceJackNut 88mph

  • I bet that silver train can go 30 mph and still pass that slow train :P

  • It is not an "Acela" nor is it an "Acela" engine. This service was indeed once called "Acela Regional" but passenger confusion with the Acela brand changed the name of the train we're watching to "Northeast Direct" and once again to today's "Northeast Regional." The "Acela" name was kept for the high-speed service only back in 2003. What we're looking at is an HHP-8 pulling a "Northeast Regional." The HHP-8 has been disappointing for both Amtrak and MARC and they are not buying any more.

  • No fair; the T was slowing down for a stop.

  • nice vid but that was a north east regional back in 2001 the powers that be wanted to change the name of amtrak to acela but thankfully this was not done the only thing to bare the acela name is the acela EXPRESS HIGH SPEED TRAINS

  • It's assinine that the T has not bought electric locos or EMUs for this line.

  • @ccolimon This is the only branch on the T with electrification. The other suburban lines do not have catenaries. For interoperability with other lines (equipment is rotated depending on need), it makes sense. If they bought electric-fed engines they'd only be good on one line. The diesels work on all lines.

Overhead electric is the best, but not the cheapest. Remember you need a whole crew of electric linesmen. The T has been strapped for cash forever.

  • that is the coolest thing ive seen. and ive been to attleboro station many times

  • Acela? No, that's the HHP-8

  • no, the commuter rail does not have any electric locos mostly because very few of the lines traveled by commuter rail are not electrified.

  • do the the mbta have any electric loco for the boston to providence line, cause it would make sense and save gas since the whole line is electric

  • very cool. thanks for posting.

  • It is not an acela, it is a regional. get your equipment right

  • Dude. Notice how it's an ACELA ENGINE. I think that's what the person meant? Learn to read or do research?

  • Nice!

  • LMAO... Shush.... Watch...

  • HAHAHHAHAHA yeah that WAS funny - !!! man the amtrak blw the red train away... the red train was acting like old rusty dusty in the little engine that could...

  • The ACELA is at its Maximum Spot on this Section the Northeast Corridor. The Powerlines are Not that Old so it can go fast. I used to Work in Boston so I always took the MBTA from Providence to Boston and the Acela always went by. Back home in Maryland the Acela doesn't go its Max Speed because the Powerlines are Old. From CONN to DC the Powerlines are Old so the Acela can't reach its Maximum Speed. I love the Acela from Pawtucket Rhode Island through Sharon Mass because it Reaches up to 150!

  • Correction the Acela Express goes up to 150!

  • Am I seeing things or is there a bit of a dip in the middle of that long straight segment?

  • Yes bit its much more level than you might think.Must I remind you this this was built 100+ years ago and the only differance is the track and the overhead wires.

  • awesome! The HHP-8 rules, but you can't beat an F40

  • Just to let you know, it's not called the "Acela Reg." It's called the "Acela HHP-8

  • I think he meant that is what the actual train is called, not just the engine.

  • Oh, maybe. Well I don't remember. That comment was over a year ago.

  • That was freakin sweet!!!!!

  • Yeah that was awesome.

  • AWESOME! Attleboro's a great station; not only is it 150 mph, but the 4 tracks are rare for the New Haven-Boston section of the NEC.

  • We only go through Attleboro at 115-130, theres a speed restriction.

  • Do you know the speed through Mansfield?

  • yeah, typically around 140, Attleboro isn't very fast.

  • Thanks!

  • Do you Railfan trains alot? I operate every 2158, and 2217

  • I do as much as I can, what time do those trains blast thru here? I know an Amtrak conductor that works the Acela, right now though he is working a flag job. DJ, know him?

  • No I don't sorry. On 2158 I think I come through South Attleboro around 935, a little bit after providence. 2217 comes through around 215.

  • I think you got your times mixed up, or ur train numbers, 2158 doesnt even get to Providence till 2:58, maybe you meant 2190? 2217, I dont even think its an actual train! I REALLY am an acela Operator, I operate 2153 and 2164 Monday's and Tuesdays to NYP
