  • my stutter is runing my life. i want a to be a dentist and my stutter holds me back. when i talk to people they might think im dumb as i alter what i say when i stutter but when i do that the thing that i am saying doesnt make sense

  • @2bilala I am the same as you! Im a police officer and i just cant get the correct words out! people look at me and thing wtf are you talking about? i sometimes want to leave my job and go into job where im left alone. :(

  • @Milesy1987 I'm sorry to hear that but don't worry people will respect your uniform no matter what. Just practice and prepare what you will say ahead of time.

  • @2bilala Why don't you just explain..."Excuse me, I stutter. If you can't understand what I'm saying please ask for clarification" That way you give the person an opportunity to be more understanding.

  • I just get really nervous and self concious when talking to new people or new situations, and then i stutter. i get so embarassed. :'(

  • sometimes i think "if i stammer ill stop from there and continue the word from where i stammered" and when i think so i dont stammer, try it people!

  • @naMixHDTV Can you explain that further? I dont fully understand.

  • @cmoney1928

    for example i say hello:

h h he he (i stop talking) and re-say that word "hello"

so it will be like he hello

  • Dont be scared while talking with people that u'l strt stammering...and the best way is don't think that you stammers n u'l do it again,i knw its not easy but give it a try it will help :)..if anybody needs help contact me...

  • Hi, I am a stammerer. Are you a stammerer too? Have you done a speech therapy in the past but you could not overcome your speech problem? Have you every wondered why? One of the most important reason is lack of practise.

So i decided to practise it with other stammerers. i am looking for people with whom i can practise and ofcourse they can practise their technique with me. If you are interested then we can do it over skype or sth. other. Practise makes man perfect. pls contact me.

  • @110ajayk How did you get on with your project? I am interested in stopping my stammer as it is quite embarrassing when speaking to people.

  • hey everyone! help me..we have a meeting de avance in our school , im confident but i cant really speak.im nervous...i really stutter..huhu:[ help me guys..please...

  • @tereypil i stammer/stutter... It happens mostly when i'm meeting new people(and you meet a lot of people while being 16 yrs). Just be calm , breathe before you speak, think about what you're about to say and slow down when speaking.

  • very very useful video indeed.....it perfectly fitted my own situation......thanx mam !! : )

  • If i didn`t stutter my life would be different , and i say really different , when my teachers say that i have to read a book out loud to the class , when it´s my turn to read i get really nervous and shaking almost crying. In class i don´t like to talk much or even at all , i don´t have friends without counting with colleagues . I prefer to be alone at home even if im not nervous i stutter i stutter less when im alone . my stutter is from my father family side , it´s his fault

  • i swear.. if i didn't stutter, it would change my life. (a BIG change in my life)

i'm not a severe stutter to be honest

it's just that... i can't ask questions to friends/teachers/family that begin with:

    "Did, Can, or Do"

Not only these words, but many other words that I can't seem to spit out.

for example - can't say dedicated...

  • just stop masturbation, it'll stop stammer or stuttering

  • @Kefco2k9 what?

  • wow so you guys can actually cure my stammer for the low low price of £370 (and an extra £180 for follow ups).

    Guess I'll keep looking...

  • Kesha could take your advice.

  • i hear that weed helps some people that stutter im not trying to be funny its true

  • I hate it . I got arrested last week and couldnt even say my full name

  • Very informative and inspiring. Thanks Laura

  • Hi, I tried hypnosis, but didnt help. Self-confidence, therapy and psychologists were the keys for me.

  • @MyStutterTreatment This is an interesting comment. I'd love to hear more about how the Self-confidence and therapy helped. Was the therapy strictly speech therapy or did it integrate work on self-confidence, and self-esteem as well?

    Thanks

  • @StartSpeakingAhora The therapy was strictly speech exercises orientated. The self-confidence boost had to be done by me. I actually realised that this was the main key after I moved to England and HAD to do things I had never believed I could do. Check out my videos, I explain more there. ;-)

  • @StartSpeakingAhora Thanks for responding. I have found that the aspect of self-confidence, self-concept modification and practice are most definitely the keys. Certainly, therapy plays a huge role, especially with children. But, adding these other aspects to the treatment may be THE key.

  • Ho yah i noticed while singing .You r are right and thank u , i'll try it ;)

  • Hi my name is vichu and i'm in INDIA and i'm a stutterer due to this shuttering i lost many chance in my life and i'm just 16 and i cried many times of it abd i bet by my self to stop this stammer and if i was well i can get a chance in c=acting in movie because i love acting nad i saw the video so please can u help me to cure it if i was cured i'll b very thank full to u till my death :(

  • @vichuthestar i don't know if you have noticed it, but when singing the stutter is gone, if you try to notice how you feel in your body when you are singing like how you breath in and out when singing and how relaxed you may be, try to get the same feeling when you are talking, i'm trying it because i stutter myself, and it actuly helps a little, i hope it will help you to :)

  • @vichuthestar Hang in there Vichu. I asked Jesus Christ to help you with your stammer. I also stutter. I found that reading out loud everyday really helps to alleviate stuttering. You'll notice that when you read out loud - you are able to find a pattern that you can read fluently at; it may take a while to find this 'pattern'. By reading out loud fluently - your mind seems to become use to this pattern of speech and it will carry over into normal speech with others. God Bless:)

  • @vichuthestar hi vichu, sorry to hear how horrid it is for you. try breathing really deep and let your words ride out on your out-breath. And all relaxation is good. Especially in your shoulders and neck and jaw. Trying to force the words out is rarely useful - better if you can kind of relax them out. I hope you find a way to more fluency.

  • @dayua i had the exact same thing with saying my name so what i did every night id look in a mirror and say in a loud voice "im lee ..... " and this helped me :)

  • Hey my first stammer came wen i was 14 after my dad had an axident an i cant speak on the phone an i cant say my name when i get asked it but last year it seemed to die off a bit but now i can feel it comin back im finding it hard to speak an i was scared the other day becasue i had to ask for 20p an i cant live like this any more iv been told about Hypnosis an i wanna give it a go is it any gd and i feel like no one takes me seriously

  • Stammering not cureable, is completely true. You can only learn to control it!

  • @BrooneyH2V Speech therapists keeps telling everyone that you only can learn to "control" you stutter. But what does that mean? What is the differences between controlling and curing your stutter?

  • @oliversgrn Curing isn't possible once you've gotten pretty old, because it's mostly a neurological thing which is permanent after the puperty.

We stutterers cannot be cured but we can learn to control it, we learn to know our stuttering better, like what it is that make us stutter, so we can work to make it less severe.

But we're still not cured because when we're talking are we doing these techniques to avoid stuttering :)

  • @oliversgrn It is commonly believed that in many cases, stuttering or stammering cannot be cured completely. While I'm not saying that I totally agree with this, because there are not too many things that absolutely impossible, it seems that people can learn to "overcome" or "manage" stuttering-stammering to the point of it virtually presenting no symptoms. Experts also say that in those for whom there are not symptoms, the challenge can reappear at any time for wide variety of reasons.

  • i suffer from this so anyone with tips?

  • yes, see what I said above to Vichu. Because everyone is different (even though I said it badly in the video) I can't give you exact help without seeing you. But relaxed deep breathing is usually helpful. You could try doing yoga maybe or just taking deep breaths as low down as you can. Also, relax your mouth if you can. The other thing is that fluent speakers join their word up together. They only pause when they need to top up their breath. Make sure your words are joined up. laura

  • There is no way to cure a stutter/stammer. It's not something you can go to rehab for or recover from it. It's something that you will live with for the rest of your life. There is a method of making it seem like you don't stutter through a form of costal breathing, but it isn't a permanent fix. It's just a temporary work around until you start getting chest pains from always using costal breathing. Remember that there is no cure and people who stutter will always live know that it isn't curable

  • @stutteringshaun I've been using costal breathing for a while and I've never gotten chest pains. Are you using it correctly or have you been taught the technique correctly? The only side-effect I've noticed is a tendency to over-oxygenate on-self and get a bit dizzy if too many costal breaths are taken. I know many many many people who use it and have never heard of chest-pains.

  • hay i just want to say there is no such thing as "stopping" a stammer no 1 will ever stop stammering if they have 1. "starfish" is a course to help live with a stammer through a breathing technique .

  • Hi , good to see you & I have both been on a Starfish course . And your so right

  • yer and err how do we cure it DUH

  • can u please just tell me how to get rid of it 4 free. I'll do any treatment. Is there even a cure?

  • u should actually tell us how to get cured instead of a story.

  • Stutter is an Americian term , Stammer is English . I am a recovering stammerer , There is only one way to gain control to combat this & this is through using a full Costal Breath , Its the same Breath we use to shout or sing .

Please check out the Starfish Project .

Ive never looked back . With full surport from recovering stammerers and Anne Blight you cant fail , Please Please contact her , Good luck , Dont forget Iv'e walked in your shoes !!!

  • i used to stutter and i didnt do any methodothes, its just... i needed to talk to survive...and after that... it was gone

  • @simmojag: I explained this technique in one of my vlog videos if you want to check it out. Also stammering/stuttering isn't something you recover from. A Stutter/Stammer is considered a disability and there isn't a cure.

  • @stutteringshaun I disagree with you. With years of training one can become a flawless speaker.

  • hey someone got some tips i stammer and stutter a little but i can read a book loud to a class without stammering or stuttering

  • please read my post

  • mcguire programme :)

  • well you should just tell us them... not just speak about what youve done or plan to do... just do an online method.

  • please read my post

  • me and my daugther both stutter:(.

  • please read my post

  • i got same thing like guerrilla990

  • look i stammer but not sutter, i have stammered for as long as i can remember, is there a cure?

    ps i am only 13

  • ive got a small stammer, its hard because it stops me from saying my own name to new people i meet.

  • I got the same thing, guerrilla

  • @reyzii8989 yea me too :( ive had stuttering since 5th grade i want to talk the way i use too i miss those days!!!! i want my old life back i don't want to have a dark cloud over me all the time! i can't xpress my self the way i use to.

  • i got same thing like u

  • me too

  • @guerrilla990 Man i have a little stammer an i cant say my name to new people i meet =/

  • @guerrilla990 its not only you...same as me...i dont answer questions in class because i stammer...how will i get to stop it???..its no joke...its really hurting me!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @guerrilla990 damn same problem with me :(

  • @guerrilla990 dude same problem. What I do is since my name's quite different from the usual ones I'll spell it. If I start stammering while spelling it I'll say it instead. So far I haven't stammered on doing both at the same time. Or if your name can be pronounced differently try it.

  • @guerrilla990 Same thing here :)

  • @guerrilla990 yeah dude, it sucks.

  • stuttering is repating a word again and again....stammering difficulty to start a word

  • Ya know, I have a slight stutter. But it's weird, like it only happens when I am on the spot in a way to say it. Like if a situation matters at all I will always end up having to repeat my self because of it.

Doesn't really happen when I am around family or most co-workers.

Same thing happens on a larger scale with public speaking so I dunno.

Cool video, I'll give some of those Japanese/ Sunny Chiba breathing techniques a try then (never knew they helped speech).

  • yeah same here!

  • Ive got a really bad stammer. Ive tried various different methods with speech therapists and it hasnt helped much with my stammer but its helped with how i feel. The therapy i have received contains desensitization and a few methods for speaking like "the slide" and "the bounce". Are there any other methods i'm not aware of because i would really like to get rid or lessen my stammer. It's really affecting me.

    Thanks

  • u got a stammer every time u try to talk, when u try to talk with someone or when u talk to a bunch of people and the emotions overwhelm you?

  • I think so. Have you any methods to help? I really need to get better!

  • u should try to talk out loud by yourself in your house, read from a book out loud as well. I'm pretty sure that talking to a person that u do know and get along with doesn't make u stammer. create a conversation, speak with them so that u can get over the inhibitions. :) breathing exercises help alot as well. hope that helped.

  • please read my post

  • @NoOz100191 You can check out my videos for a temporary cure which is a form of costal breathing. I used the method in one of my vlogs showing the difference it makes.

  • stammering and stuttering are different...i used to stutter, but now it has worsened into stammering

  • Generally it is held that stammering and stuttering are two words that describe the same problem. It seems that the word stuttering is more commonly used in the USA and the term stammering is more commonly used in the UK. Laura certainly uses the two words interchangeably.

  • but i think if there was somway that u didnt kno u stuttered maybe u wouldnt stutter

  • thanks! keep watching - more vids to come! L

  • Laura Spicer here.Briaranjo-Have you ever been wrong? I think stammering is a pre-disposition. Some people just have a slice of cake and get fatter.I can eat anything &stay slim-ish.Stammerers can breathe more efficiently, think differently&train muscles to be more strong and flexible.I have met and treated quite a lot of people who now do not stammer. So maybe you can get rid of it completely, like fat people can get thin by learning to be more conscious about their eating habits.

  • i tottaly agree with coolmannuu, since it is very hard for many people to me with u personally it wuld b EXTREMELY helpful if you could post just some of your general techniques. I understand that it might be a loss of income for a doctor like you ( we all know how the economy is) but if you could post some tehciniques that would be helpful, thanks :-)

  • hey laura ....its gud that u are helping people to overcome there stammering ....but like I am sitting here in india so it is not possible for me to come there and meet u personally. Why dont u put some of ur general techniques that are common to most of the stammerers here on youtube.Everyone will be thankful to u .......

  • see my reply above! will do asap.

  • "different people are different" most ironic wall post i've ever seen

  • OK that could probably have been said a little more clearly. The point Laura is making is that there is not one generic approach that works for all stammerers and that it is necessary to tailor treatment to an individual's situation. So perhaps 'different people may require different methods to help them to stop stammering' would be a better way of putting it.

  • hypnotherapist? so you are saying you can hyponisis some one and help them to speak "fluently" and be "normal.

  • Hypnosis (which is mainly relaxation, really) can be very useful in helping someone to repattern the stammering or stuttering reflex, especially when done by someone with a good grounding in NLP and with experience dealing with voice. It may not provide a miracle cure and we would not want to claim that. It may well help with fluency though, but if you go down this path make sure you find someone local to you who is experienced with voice-work.

  • @JustBeWell well said ....i totally agree with ur words.....

  • lame, you can't get rid of it completely, different people are different.

  • I agree with you, different people are different. We are not claiming a 100% cure for all stammering, just that these techniques can often help increase fluency, reduce anxiety about stammering, and in some cases they make a really radical difference. It isn't just me, however, any highly experienced hypnotherapist, especially soneone experienced with NLP, may be able to help someone to speak more fluently, even if they are not always able to stop the stammering completely.
