You can't really compare the two, they are both greats, it's like comparing Oranges and Tangerines. Sure they might be related but the taste is remarkably different. Respect both for their contributions and don't worry about which was "Better" they were both awesome.
If Jimmy is God than Iommi is the Devil, equal in power but perceived differently. They spawned two branches of rock/metal. One gave us Bad Company, Van Halen, Motley Crue and glam. The other, Priest, Maiden, Metallica, and Slayer. I prefer the latter bands, that is Iommi's legacy.
Iommi, is the Godfather of metal guitar as we all know it to be, his pentatonic licks and blues scale based picking have defined the instrument played in the style we all so love. Paige is fuckn awesome BUT Zepplin were a pop band, BLACK SABBATH is the reason we are even havn this conversation.
Sabbath were strongly influenced by Led Zeppelin, as theyve stated. So Sabbath would never have reached their heights without Zeppelin.
Page had for more musical skill, covering far more genres. He was also far more influential. Black Sabbath focused more on the same types of music, showing lack of musical knowledge, unlike Zeppelin.

@guitarrifflessons....I disagree, it lacks melody, is too sloppy and stuttering to be a truly great solo. A solo should fit the song, not just be a spot where the band drops out and the guitar player freaks out for a bit. I think the "Whole Lotta Love" solo fits the song perfectly. And I find it hard to believe springs squeal. Les Pauls and Telle's dont have springs, so unless he was completely out of character and playing a strat, I don't see how that could happen. can you send me a link to it?
Iommi is way more fluid and melodic.he can play just as fast as, but has more control.Page is more a shit-kicking guitar player, wild loose and whatever he hits, he's so convincing that it LOOKS right, but I doesn't sound right.....and Iommi has fake fingertips, so in my book he's like Page upgraded and more refined. And i like Sabbath better, so maybe I'm biased. but some of that LOTR stuff in Zepp gets pretty lame for me (lyrically).And Battle of Evermore sounds like crucifixion music.

As for LIVE .. jimmy may have a bit better stage presence than iommi but jimmys playing started gettin really sloppy after about 1973'ish.
Tony i think sounds even better live with his solos and the band itself would go off on these random awesome jazz/jams

seriously they're both gods and as individual musicians it's absolutely retarded to compare them, especially in a competitive fashion. nevermind that the tone for that opening solo for Paranoid is completely different than the one in Stairway. However in terms of sheer badassness(not a real word but I don't care) Black Sabbath easily trumps Led Zeppelin. The Heaviest band of all time, no contest.

Jimmy is my favorite guitarist because of his creativeness and dynamic style, but Sabbath rocks too.
Iommi played an awesome and cleaner live performance than Page.
Page's lead had more feeling and improvising even though it is choppy at times.
Page looked cooler while playing too! LOL

In terms of technical playing skills and ability Jimmy Page is no doubt far superior to Tony Iommi. However, when it comes to music writing ability Iommis riffs and brilliantly structured solos beat any guitar player there has even been and most likely will ever be.

Due grandissimi chitarristi ma i loro stili sono molto diversi. Page ha toccato numerosi generi (blues, folk, country, rock n'roll, reggae), Iommi è incentrato prettamente sul blues e per il suo stile l'ha reso più lento e oscuro. Se parliamo di hard rock Page sarà sicuramente più importante di Iommi ma se parliamo di heavy metal Tony è il padre di ogni chitarrista del genere.

You can't really compare the two, they are both greats, it's like comparing Oranges and Tangerines. Sure they might be related but the taste is remarkably different. Respect both for their contributions and don't worry about which was "Better" they were both awesome.

If Jimmy is God than Iommi is the Devil, equal in power but perceived differently. They spawned two branches of rock/metal. One gave us Bad Company, Van Halen, Motley Crue and glam. The other, Priest, Maiden, Metallica, and Slayer. I prefer the latter bands, that is Iommi's legacy.

Iommi, is the Godfather of metal guitar as we all know it to be, his pentatonic licks and blues scale based picking have defined the instrument played in the style we all so love. Paige is fuckn awesome BUT Zepplin were a pop band, BLACK SABBATH is the reason we are even havn this conversation.

We shouldn't even be debating this.
Sabbath were strongly influenced by Led Zeppelin, as theyve stated. So Sabbath would never have reached their heights without Zeppelin.
Page had for more musical skill, covering far more genres. He was also far more influential. Black Sabbath focused more on the same types of music, showing lack of musical knowledge, unlike Zeppelin.
Oh and dont listen to scottelliottmusic, hes VERY biased that its ridiculous.

And anyone who has an opinion is biased, so thats not a bad thing. Otherwise its just a bunch of objective facts with no judgement. Lastly, I find it hard to believe you listen to full Sabbath albums if you think they stuck to one kind of music.

@Pyrocamo....I believe that was in '86....and who knows when this footage is from? That looks like Tony Martin, so most likely after, but aside from the delay and staccato picking, not much is the same. Anything w/ delay and staccato picking in that scale will sound similar.

@Kashmir0109....ok, but listen to "Fluff" to hear his melodic ability, Listen to "Wicked Word" (esp. last 5min) to see him beat out "Heart Breaker" for speed and attitude, then into the finger-picking melody, then "Bit of Finger->Warning", how 'bout "A National Acrobat" "Sabbra Cadabra"....yeah hes way better, or at the very least equal.Page does nothing Iommi can't do better, except Sabbath just wrote scarier songs so chicks didn't dig 'em as much and dudes go where the chicks go.

You wana hear some wicked blues lead, check the outro of "Planet Cravan", Page NEVR had the finesse/touch....even "Jack the Stripper" has some decent leads in it...Page's solos are just more known in popular culture.

@guitarrifflessons....I disagree, it lacks melody, is too sloppy and stuttering to be a truly great solo. A solo should fit the song, not just be a spot where the band drops out and the guitar player freaks out for a bit. I think the "Whole Lotta Love" solo fits the song perfectly. And I find it hard to believe springs squeal. Les Pauls and Telle's dont have springs, so unless he was completely out of character and playing a strat, I don't see how that could happen. can you send me a link to it?

Iommi is way more fluid and melodic.he can play just as fast as, but has more control.Page is more a shit-kicking guitar player, wild loose and whatever he hits, he's so convincing that it LOOKS right, but I doesn't sound right.....and Iommi has fake fingertips, so in my book he's like Page upgraded and more refined. And i like Sabbath better, so maybe I'm biased. but some of that LOTR stuff in Zepp gets pretty lame for me (lyrically).And Battle of Evermore sounds like crucifixion music.
