I did not even notice that you had a porcupine tree song up. I only heard of them recently and have only heard a few songs (the drummer in my band likes them), but i really like their stuff that i have heard.
@choppercrue lol! I agree, Porcupine Tree IS an amazing band, and this IS a bad cover! BUT, I love this band so much, & respect Colin's bass playing, had to at least try to learn it! :) So props for trying to learn it, & a kick in the butt for posting it & disrespecting the bassist's talent in Porcupine Tree.
Yes, I agree about the tuning. I play by ear too, And when I listen back to this I go "ughhh!" But I was learning a lot of different stuff about the bass, like tuning, as you can tell! lol!
Hey, I just stumbled onto your videos. Very nice. I'm 24 and am just getting into playing bass. I also am just getting into Porcupine Tree, just heard them the first time the other day.
Anyways, nice playing. Keep up the excellent work. :)
Good job. As 73h1337kiwi said, train yourself to use all four fingers of your left hand and you'll be even better. Also, there was a transition from, I think A to G, on the bottom string that you played with your first finger alone (by sliding down). It'll be a lot easier for you, and sound better, if you can work out a way of playing the first note with finger 3 or 2, the finger 1 for the lower note.
Still, that was really good. Want to join my band?
Thank you! Oh and I agree on the fingering and sliding. But read my channel info, I play weird cuz I have lupus & with that, I have some bad arthritis in my hands and fingers, so I've had to learn to play the bass with just the fingers I can move. So I slide a lot. BUT, playing helps loosen up the others, so maybe some day I will be able to use them!
Here are a few youtube videos of Mick Karn playing bass, fretless I believe, in the 1970's, early 80's band named Japan.
watch?v=QLMPx4Ng-Jo
watch?v=vq-XvZ9TK98
watch?v=Mxr3B1rNHGc
By the way, did you notice the keyboard player? Not the one doing vocals, but the other one. That's a very young Richard Barbieri, who as you know now plays keyboards in Porcupine Tree.

Music is an international language. You don't have to understand the words...the rhythm, and the energy, can move you. Music is the greatest love of my life, and it's gotten me through some tough times, too.
Keep up the good work, and keep fighting!!! God Bless!!
Seriously, I didn't saw a begginer bassist. You are very good! Your tempo is perfect!!
Need to specially felicitate you because you aren't shy about your desease. I have a autoimmune desease too (Crohn' desease), and I'm proud you don't let yourself be defeated by it!
Porcupine Tree is great - I just learned this song myself, and it's not terribly easy. It takes some work. You're doing really well, and it's nice to see another female bass player trying out more technical material. Keep it up! :)
lol! So I could fix your lunches in the morning??? lol! Or because I would buy you the best bass and tell you to spend all the time you need playing it. :)
Just got back from your channel. EXCELLENT!!! I subscribed and left a couple of comments. WOW! You really "get" or "understand" their music. I'm glad I found your channel. Thanks!!!
Hey thank you! It hasn't been until just recently that I've learned I got lucky when choosing a bass. I didn't know anything about guitars or basses when I bought it (tone, etc.) so luckily got a decent one!
if you are just a beginner this is great.. your fingertechnique and the way your thumb is on the pickup is just great! :D exactly as it should be, keep practicing and you'll be very good :)
Yes, beginner when playing this song. I have lupus, which arthritis is part of. My hands and fingers don't work like most people. So I can only play as I can. I have to adapt.
Kudos. Porcupine tree are awesome. I've been playing bass for about 3 years and i've yet to attempt this, as it sounds really fiddly. You've inspired me. :)
Thanks! I like my bass, it is just my size! I haven't played this in a long time. I need to, since I've learned more about playing the bass. I need to check out your videos.
Yeah, this song is definately a keeper. Of course I'm biased but I like songs which are domiated by the bass. :) I'm in a huge Porcupine Tree phase right now - can't get enough of those guys.
Me too! PC phase that is. I didn't even know about them until my husband gave me a CD, then the next month they came to our city, in a small venue, and I got to sit down front!!! I was BLOWN AWAY! Colin's bass playing was mesmerizing (I can't spell)
lol! When you find someone that likes the same band, it is easy to want to hang out with them. Porcupine Tree is one of those bands that are so awesome once you discover them, you can't stop listening!
That is wild! Our band just learned Plush for our set, and will probably do Interstate Love Song and some others. You are right, some excellent songs by them.
Heck, maybe I did??? I have to go play it now to see how I played it....lol! My finger style is because I can't play bass correctly I guess, so I'm all over the place. Plus in the band I'm in, I have to play along with the guitar player....ugh..hard.
also a good job!, maybe a nice tip?.. try muting the low strings with your thumb when not playing them. i mean when you do the fingerstyle on the D&G strings put youre thumb on the E or A in stead of the pickup. hope it helps. cheers!
Yea, actually they are. LOL! Naw, without sounding like I am whining, my disability causes me not to have good control of my hands or fingers...I am sort of spastic if you want to call it that. So I don't look like I am flowing. That is why I needed the metronome so bad, to close my eyes, concentrate and relax.
Thank you, I do play with a metronome, plus I record sometimes directly into my PC using the metronome, but when I play and video it, the timing is off due to the constraints of a cheap digital camera on movie mode. When I began learning bass, the first thing I got before the tuner was a metronome. I agree on the E, thank you that will help A LOT!! I appreciate the help.
You aren't buggin me!!! Can't wait to see your video, will after I respond to this. Yea, about the bridge, I listen to this CD in my car all the time and I was thinking I was all wrong in places...I am!! ha! Gotta fix that. OK, I'll go look now!
as always you did great girl! did you uload the new version of anna molly already? I'm going over your profile to check it out. and some other sounds I didn't noticed you had. keep it up girl! you rock!
No I didn't upload it yet, I don't like it afterall! ha! I was reading the Bass Player magazine with Incubus' bass player in it and the tab for Anna Molly, and decided I'd better stick to his tab...since he plays it! So I don't like my video now, gonna redo it tonight!

compared to most 5 strings, yes it is light. I love it. The 5th string sounds kind of muddy, but might just be the brand of strings I have on it.
DocLacrosse 4 years ago
3)Your hands seem a bit too "confused" when you play the main "groove".
Solution: Get a tab sheet and know the song better. Nothing around it really.
Overall you're doing a good job. Keep it up!
JeffAyache 4 years ago
Yea, actually they are. LOL! Naw, without sounding like I am whining, my disability causes me not to have good control of my hands or fingers...I am sort of spastic if you want to call it that. emusedone 4 years ago
Ok, I can see a few problems you have (no disrespect):
1) You are playing ahead of the music.
Solution: Practice with a metronome more often.
2) You have trouble reaching some notes in the main "groove" part of the song.
Solution: Try playing on the 12th fret on the E string instead of going on the higher strings.
JeffAyache 4 years ago
