Thank you for your excellent dialogue, your thought provoking comments and dissertations on this subject. This is just one of the many reasons I love Martial Arts. Remember this during your interpretations of the way. "There are many different paths that lead to the top of the mountain."
The point of Tai Chi is to win by giving way. The blow of a thousand pounds is useless if it lands on nothing. I read what people wrote on here and think they have a lot to learn about giving way.
Power and Force / Tai Chi is 'Wei Wu Wei, do without doing, act without acting'.
Practice non-action. Work without doing. Taste the tasteless. Magnify the small, increase the few. Reward bitterness with care. See simplicity in the complicated.
Achieve greatness in little things. In the universe the difficult things are done as if they are easy. In the universe great acts are made up of small deeds. The sage does not attempt things very big. And thus achieves greatness.
@YourBossisBad The things you say to do are good things to do but they are not Wei Wu Wei. When we are 1 with the Dao, experience Union with God, or we are 1 with "That" from which the 10000 things arise; then it is not the individual who is "doing", it is God "Doing" through us. That is the real meaning of Wei Wu Wei, "doing without doing"
everyone is different no two people are the same. Too compare a yellow rose to a red rose is just a matter of taste. If you don't thin this man this martial arts practioner is as good as someone else may believe. believe this if he continues to enjoy and practice his art he can only get closer to HIS GOAL OF ENLIGHTMENT for himself, not yours.
Those who criticize another are only showing their intolarance for the possibility for change. Are you without imperfections? He is Tai Chi.
37 posture Yang form developed by Master Chen Manching, student of Master Yang Chenfu. That isn't entirely true. Yang form was developed by Yang Cheng Fu about 100 years before Chen Manchan who revised it by making the Yang form shorter and just as valueble.
Here's a question, did this guy ever produce a "master" to better or equal him? Were any of his students champion fighters? I'll save you the time, the answer is no. This dude is just exalted by the hippies who misinterpreted his amazing alignment for not using force or power LOL. Which is impossible btw.
@CheezyMacDethbot In china the term Master to show respect. It was title gained after years of giving Wisdom. However Cheng Man Ching was master at 5 of the most respected arts in China. Medicine, Clarigraphy, Painting, and I believe the 5th was music. Don't quote me on that one. Because of this he was considered to be professor
@CheezyMacDethbot : what are you talking about? what is impossible? why you hating on cheng man ching, if you dont like him why did you click the link, im sure you knew what you would find. what martial arts do you practice? how many REAL fights have you won? Cheng Man Ching's teaching is still in effect, he is the entire reason i got into tai chi, chi kung ,bagua. so... enlighten me,, what's the beef?
@noklarok Spare me your utterly ridiculous ad hominem dimwittery. This is about the facts on this guy and his legacy. So try to focus if I haven't already overwhelmed you with the proper way to address a subject. Taiji in America is nearly an ineffectual farce, and it starts with CMC's legacy, and the hippies who carried it forward. He was something, his legacy, eh not so much.
I've trained under three of his students, I know what I'm talking about.
@CheezyMacDethbot : well , my teacher learnt from one of his students, and i am learning from him,, and i am very happy with how my tai chi has progressed. fuck america,, it's full of douchey dipshits. you have no right to disrespect cheng man ching just cos some of his 'students' are douchey hippy teahers that dont have a deep understanding of tai chi. Please do tell who your teachers were, i may have heard of a couple. who have you studied under that was better?
@CheezyMacDethbot it seems to me that if you were as experienced in taiji as you state you would also be wise enough to see that wether or not someone else is a fool has little effect on you and so warrants no response. By engaging someone in conversation you are shareing something of yourself, why share that with someone you you do not cae for? Thy gt your time and you get ...nothing?
@CheezyMacDethbot Cheng Man Ching was a great man! I learned Tai Chi from a student of Cheng's daughter and practiced his form for 40 years. It has brought me many benefits. What do I care of other's opinions, I have my own experience to guide me. Loa Tsu (Witter Bynner's translation), in the 2nd stanza says among other things, "People through finding one man fit, judge another unfit". I say let's not argue about other people, let us do Tai Chi as best we can and leave the rest to the Dao.
can someone explain to me the meaning of steel wrapped in cotton i tried to ask someone who waz describing it on his videos clear's tai chi but he just says i need to buy his dvd lol can anyone help me is this a real move or what?
@TheShaolinScholar On the outside it looks soft, but the infrastructure is solid and hard. Tai chi is soft and gentle in the set, but in combat those soft movements can be used to great effect. Hope that helps, sorry if this was already answered.
He was not a guru. He was a teacher. If people think that his lifestyle detracted from what he did as a man then thats fine and shows a view of the world where things are black and white.
Those who studied with him benefitted greatly both in their practice and their lives. The fact is;he was a human being. He was once asked about a flaw in him, he laughed and said" it is very difficult to overcome ones nature".
relax relax relax. Get all precious if its your nature but life is as it is
he's amazing.. every move he does looks like control.. every walk back a leg sweep.. every turn a dodge.. a sweep.. a deflection.. a grapple to directional motion... such skill.. sifu.. you will be missed.. and yet.. i wish i'd learn from you if i was at your time.. even if i was too old.. even if we were the same age.. i would empty my cup
I don't have any literary sources on hand to sight. However multiple non aquainted individuals have mentioned that Pro. Cheng had become an alcoholic by the time he turned 45. Later he battled with weight problems in addition to his alcohol addiction. He eventually suffered from fatal heart complications. Myles makes a good point though, Cheng lived to 75, not bad... not great either.
MylesAngus: Sorry if you were offended. You can drop the condecending act though. Thanks for understanding.
Syphen888....that is interesting, I didn't know that. Thanks.... The reason why I would take Tai Chi is to live well into my 90's or even over a 100 and manage to live a life not assisted by others ie, living in a nursing home like most old people.
That's a good point about your gandfather, my great grandmother lived to 96, similarly.
Food for thought... flexibility is life, stagnation, death. If you want to remain independent you *must* keep your body supple. There is a baguazhang master in China past 100 who swears by eating a tomato every day. Maybe there is something to it. My personal opinion is that right thinking along with general healthy living will have the best effects.
I don't know what kind of man Prof. Cheng was. History records that he was highly esteemed, in addition to that, I believe people are generally good.
In terms of flaws, it's all relative. What makes life worth living is arbitrary; it's my hope that he was satisfied with his. He's touched many people and left an over all positive impression on the human race.
Unless you are a person who considers the intake of any alcohol whatsoever as an abuse of the body, how could you possibly know if "he abused his body with alcohol"? Where do you come off with that kind of tripe? Was he a doctor of herbal medicine? Yes he was. He often had well over one or two dozen patients waiting to have him read their pulses and prescribe herbal medicines for them. Did he believe that a limited amount of alcohol could help open a person's internal system? He did.
The key point is "limited amount". Drinking alcohol in moderation is fine because it helps digestion, but as Syphen888 pointed out he liked to drink. There is a clear difference between what you are saying - benefits of alcohol - and what Chen Manching actually did with his alcohol.
How do you know "what Chen (sic) Manching (sic) actually did with his alcohol"? Were you there? I was there from at his studio(s), three time a week, from 1970 to 1975, when he passed on, and kept on going there for a year after his demise, at which time I went to San Francisco to study with Ben Lo for just under a year. So, if you know more about the Professor's alcohol intake than I do, please give me your references, so that I might be enlightened about them.
Well, he lived fully for 75 years, in which time he mastered the following arts: taijiquan, Chinese herbal medicine, Chinese calligraphy, painting, and Chinese poetry. He was very highly regarded in all those arts. As I recall, his own main taiji teacher, great master Yang Chengfu, died at 59 years of age.
Thanks for the info, it' just that my grandfather lived until he was 92 and never did any excercise or meditation and smoked until his 60's. I thought that Tai Chi and qigong was supposed to prolong longativity and heal past health problems. I was suprised to read he died at 75 at his desk. Makes you wonder........
@Taurus8763 Many think that long life in the physical body is something to be desired. Certainly it is good to be healthy, strong, and supple for as long as one lives. One must remember that life in the physical body is only the beginning of life. The next life in the Spirit is infinitely better. I have done Cheng's form for 40 years. If I hadn't I would have been in a wheel chair 30 years ago and dead 20 years ago. I look forward to the next life but Tai Chi has helped me have a better body.
even with the human body's new found resiliency, unless a person becomes a fabled daoist immortal, even with Tai Chi practice proper diet and care of the body is still mandatory, as the body remains vulnerable throughout life, no matter how strong the chi circulation. Greater resiliency, DOES NOT mean the body is indestructible, as the Cheng Man Ching tragedy proved, the man eventually died of cirrhosis.
one mistake many people make with Tai Chi practice, is that they take for granted the resiliency chi energy can give the human body. When this was filmed, master cheng man ching was consuming enough liquor on a daily basis that would kill normal people. He should not have even been up and about; THAT, is the power of Tai Chi Chuan, the resiliency it can give the human body. When this video was made, he should have been dead from liquor poisoning. Not a miracle that he was up and about;TaiChi
Hi, thank you for the video. Chen Man Ching, Shifu very graceful and subtle. I follow him thru lineage in the 36 form. please feel free to check out my favorites of Zhao Changjun, Shifu and Hassan Rucker, Lao Shi, of the Northern Wushu Kung Fu School of Philadelphia
Chen Manching and Fu Zhongwen had the same sifu, Yang Chengfu. But if you compare how they do the form you will find a lot of differences. Even Chengfu's son,Zhenduo, does it differently than his father. Tai chi is an art, and all sifus interpret it differently. As long as the essentials are understood and followed the form can be played with subtle variences. The same way music will be interpreted differently by various musiciens. Beginners and intermediate though should try to copy their sifu.
Thanks for posting this video. I have learned this form in the past with minor variations. I enjoyed seeing the orignal form and would to get back into tai chi. This is definity a video to add to the favorites. Thanks for sharing Great video!!!
When I broke my ankle in the 90's and the doctor said it is healed I wondered what I could do for my self. The cosmic forces whispered Tai chi and I listened. Chen Manching had already passed through this plane of existence and still left a legacy that will help heal revitalize and ease the dis ease of the pilgrim seeker. The short form 37 movement has helped me not only with that injury but throughout life.
Thanks for sharing! The videos from Cheng Man Ching in New York, doing form in Central Park, are more popular, and in better quality, but this videoclip is made with a better understanding of Tai Chi from whoever made the film.
Running this fullscreen, doing my form along, that was fun right now, spirited fun!
William CC Chen is the best, i want to learn the other half of this form cause i learned the first half along time ago. anybody know of any teachers in vegas or near here
the "limp" look is part of CMC's innovations of the form. He emphasized "Beautiful ladies hand" which is the constant relaxation of the wrist. It is quite effective -- I can attest having worked often with Ben Lo and others.
Hi drdankness the limp noodle actually shows his perfection in the form - being TOTALLY relaxed gives the form its power. If you are relaxed, you are connected and rooted - a push from this man using no muscles sent 6ft marines flying through the air!
you misunderstand what i am saying. soft and limp are not the same. this limpness i see is the result of collapsing. and power can be seen by a trained eye even when the form is executed slowly. i am not impressed by his push hands either. what i see is a lot of shoving. then again, this is popular and mainstream so i understand the predominance of misconceptions in tai chi. SOFT is NOT the same as LIMP.
I sort of see what you are trying to say, but I don't have a video example of what you yourself have seen as exemplifying the form as you think it should be done. Please give us a link that is as soft and powerful as you seem to indicate can be done!?
look up videos on here of: 1) Yang Shou Chung- first son (and only son from 1st marriage) of Yang Cheng Fu and only to complete the system under the tutelage of his father. He zips through the form though. Also look at 2) Vincent Chu- his father was one of two family students/disciples of the former. These are some very powerful men who have kept a low profile in the tai chi world. there are others as well, names no to mentioned here...
I think its best described as one becoming a Soft body with a Sturdy Structure. something limp is lifeless- thus if u r limp, u already lost. but in taiji it is more a 'cotton wrapped around steel' type of feel.
his health. he wasn't a master , true, but he gave me a book in english that was written but a master whose name i forgot. my friend told me that cheng manching named that master as his hier. tht man is in taiwan now, maybe some of you know his name lah. so, in the book it was all the way i learned it. just a few days ago i saw this footage and it is different. does anyone of you know who changed the routine and why?
This is the first time I have seen this video. I have seen others. This matches the method Ben Lo continues to teach. Ben is the hier as far as I know, but there is someone in Taiwan that it mentioned by ben also.
hey, i have a problem lah. i have learned this 37 step routine in malaysia, and although the techniques are the same they differ in details and in the (to be continued)
This film was know in the the 70s as "the teaching film". We used to die wainting for Mr. Smith to show it - once in a blue moon - at the Bethesda YMCA.
This is taiji... Perfect.

Greater resiliency, DOES NOT mean the body is indestructible, as the Cheng Man Ching tragedy proved, the man eventually died of cirrhosis.
stardingo747 3 years ago
one mistake many people make with Tai Chi practice, is that they take for granted the resiliency chi energy can give the human body. Not a miracle that he was up and about;TaiChi

you should listen to the herzog "tai chi" song from the van damme movie "kickboxer" while watching this for greater dramatic effect!

Beginners and intermediate though should try to copy their sifu.

ya, just like music. I just listened to 'I Will Never Fall In Love Again' by Tom Jones and Elvis. The same song was sang so distinctively different

Running this fullscreen, doing my form along, that was fun right now, spirited fun!

the "limp" look is part of CMC's innovations of the form. He emphasized "Beautiful ladies hand" which is the constant relaxation of the wrist. It is quite effective -- I can attest having worked often with Ben Lo and others.
dononeworld 4 years ago
Hi drdankness the limp noodle actually shows his perfection in the form - being TOTALLY relaxed gives the form its power. If you are relaxed, you are connected and rooted - a push from this man using no muscles sent 6ft marines flying through the air!
slubomirski 4 years ago
you misunderstand what i am saying. soft and limp are not the same. this limpness i see is the result of collapsing. and power can be seen by a trained eye even when the form is executed slowly. i am not impressed by his push hands either. what i see is a lot of shoving. then again, this is popular and mainstream so i understand the predominance of misconceptions in tai chi. SOFT is NOT the same as LIMP.
drdankness 4 years ago
I sort of see what you are trying to say, but I don't have a video example of what you yourself have seen as exemplifying the form as you think it should be done. Please give us a link that is as soft and powerful as you seem to indicate can be done!?
slubomirski 4 years ago
look up videos on here of: 1) Yang Shou Chung- first son (and only son from 1st marriage) of Yang Cheng Fu and only to complete the system under the tutelage of his father. He zips through the form though. Also look at 2) Vincent Chu- his father was one of two family students/disciples of the former. These are some very powerful men who have kept a low profile in the tai chi world. there are others as well, names no to mentioned here...
drdankness 4 years ago 2
by "only" i mean the only one of his sons
drdankness 4 years ago
I think its best described as one becoming a Soft body with a Sturdy Structure. something limp is lifeless- thus if u r limp, u already lost. but in taiji it is more a 'cotton wrapped around steel' type of feel.
imbrd 4 years ago
i heard CMC is good writer and push-hands, but taiji so-so. anyone know?
megreenhulk 4 years ago
his form doesnt look very powerful. i'm not talking about speed or hardness though. he just looks like a limp noodle. something is missing...
drdankness 4 years ago
Your right it doesn't LOOK powerful. This art's power comes internally (chi, qi,etc). Really there is nothing to see, only feel.

his health. he wasn't a master , true, but he gave me a book in english that was written but a master whose name i forgot. my friend told me that cheng manching named that master as his hier. tht man is in taiwan now, maybe some of you know his name lah. so, in the book it was all the way i learned it. just a few days ago i saw this footage and it is different. does anyone of you know who changed the routine and why?
ramblinghun 5 years ago
This is the first time I have seen this video. I have seen others. This matches the method Ben Lo continues to teach. Ben is the hier as far as I know, but there is someone in Taiwan that it mentioned by ben also.
