Always loved the 8-bit 4 channel Amiga versions of Sierra soundtracks best. They just had a certain something, even though the patches were samples of the MT-32.
@VintageJunior Also, it's not just samples. THere are samples of the "attack" portion of a sound (e.g. the MOMENT a string is plucked) but the sustain portion is generated through true synthesis (e.g. the tone the string makes after you pluck it is generated through synthesis). Because it has a true synthesizer portion, custom sysex commands can radically alter the sounds that it produces. It's a cool machine.
Oh man, that was AWESOME! I first heard this played back on the proper sound equipment at the local computer shop in the mall back in the day and had to get the game on the spot! Just last week I bought the Space Quest collection and was disappointed that the music playback wasn't nearly this good despite the technology advancements since then. Thank you so much for posting this!
Awesome, I loved this game. I was playing it on a Tandy 1000 SL2 that actually spoke the "Where am I" part if you had 640K in it. But damn, the midi couldn't come close to competing with the roland.

Incredibly beautiful music - they don't make 'em like this anymore...
SQ III, Monkey Island 1 & 2 and Legend of Kyrandia had the most memorable Roland tunes :)
*fires up his MT-32 and the new SCUMM VM*

Is there any cheaper compatible soundcard?
VintageJunior 1 year ago
@VintageJunior No. The MT-32 is unique. There is an MT-32 emulator, but it doesn't sound quite the same.

This is positively epic. I'm jealous of all Roland soundcard/sound equipment owners.

Wow sometimes the roland could make some old game tunes sound a bit wonkey, but it really works well with SQ3

It's because it was made specifically for MT-32 with custom samples and not relying on generic MIDI mapping.

Space quest 1 thru to 5 was great. Space quest 6 sucked though.
