the reason english is such a widely used language is because of our empire, we used 2 rule half the world til we decided 2 give most of it back, ofcourse the germans tried 2 get in on the action but winston churchill was avin none of it and the germs got wiped out.

There's no doubt American culture has had an effect after the 60s or 70s. In our age, the most important reason is the effect of the internet being dominated by English speakers.

Thus the influence that America has had in spreading English, while important, is clearly secondary to and directly derived from, British influence.

Although its hard to disagree that English language has reach it place in the world due too American culture dominance of the planet. It is unfair too say Britain has not had at least a small part in the widespread use of the Language. For example the commonwealth of nations at present has 53 nations, most of them former members of the British empire, and to say that England/Britain did not play a major role in English being spoken in those counties is a position that is hard to defend.
