  • Where did you find this photo? I have never seen it before.

  • a great song. Perhaps the greatest!

  • one of the most poignant love songs of all times.

  • Chanson nostalgique mais magnifiquement interprétée par joan Baez meilleur que version Dylan qui la crée Existe sur un 33t que je possède :Joan Baez chante Dylan

  • beautiful... thanks for uploading

  • Absolutely gorgeous

  • I have been a follower of Joan Baez since being introduced to her, in a bedroom in North London, by a wonderful girl I knew. The introduction was by candle light or mauve bulbs to the sound of a rainy, windy, North London, Winter. The girl is gone and I am 38 winters older. Whatever may have become of that girl I once knew, Joan has remained true her voice, mature now, still cuts the mustard. In all those years I have never heard this until now it is spellbinding and Joan at her best.

  • Strange that she sings a lobe song about the woman Dylan left her for

  • I searched for Bob Dylan's version and found this. What with this and Diamonds and Rust I'm becoming a Joan Baez fan 40 years too late.

  • a song hasnt made me cry in a long time, certainly the only cover that can do bobs magical version any justice

  • @ scout4me1 ghodium has the right idea. As I recall, the complete Any Day Now track is about 13 minutes long. Two uploads; each 7 minutes long would allow for some careful splicing of the two halves with nothing missing in the middle. Just a thought !

Hopefully Youtube wouldn't mind that as it would involve some hassle and it wouldn't be a straight forward copy job.

  • i have it on audio cassette, wudda put it on her myself if i had the equipment, one of my favourites, magical song sung by an angel

  • say dude, can't you put the full song on here in two halves if they won't let you post it all in one? gotta be better than a total truncation

  • oriskany: I am so sorry to hear of you loss. I lost my sister-in-law, and more importantly, my wife lost her sister, 12 years ago. The feeling of loss seems to be so deep that it remains - however the pain that you so deeply feel, will diminish with time. While the passing of my sister-in-law was so, so sad - I can only begin to comprehend the loss of a child. While I do not know you, please hold the reality that I love you ... and, more importantly, I embrace you in your loss.

  • @jimbob0649

oriskany: I understand "This was always the antedote to a bad "trip" the next morning. Her voice would always bring us down to a smooth landing. " I know what you mean.

  • please someone put the Dylan's rehearsal of this song with bunch of guys. There was part 1 and part 2 of it and my god it was amazing but then i think copyright big guns banned the video please whoever got it put it back on youtube

  • Cette chanson reste ma préférée dans le répertoire de cette immense artiste que nous aurons l'occasion de saluer à la prochaine fête de l'hulma.

  • The album, "Any Day Now" is so beautiful. It's almost hypnotic. You can

listen to it over and over and it spellbounds you with grace, peace and beauty.

Thank you Ms. Baez. You are awesome and a legend!!

  • Joan looks like a saint in that photo.

  • i never idled meine.

  • I fell in love with this voice long, long time ago...

  • lovely voice, but dylan's verse is drowned out by the backing track and joan's overphrased vibrato.

  • @Cruzman3609 that's probably because he was tired and worn out when he wrote it.

  • Joan eres DIVINA.

  • marvellous,an absolute haunting beautiful song beautifully sung by Joan!

  • Joan is the best and this is one of her best. What an icon

  • hmmmm........great...(sob)...

  • yes its about bobs ex wife sara he he says that he wrote this song for her on the desire album in the track sara

  • yes its about bobs ex wife sarah he he says that he wrote this song for her on the desire album in the track sarah

  • It's so sad that she is singing about the woman that Bob left her for.

    but her voice is exquisite.

  • God awful. No one has any business singing this other than Dylan. Her voice is warbling and terrible. It doesn't suit the beauty of this song at all. Can't stand it. Blasphemy.

  • The entire cut is on a twin-album entitled, "Any Day Now". That album is one of a kind that you'll play virtually every day. Trust me.

  • @oriskany Yes, I do have that album.

  • @oriskany You are so totally right. In the summer between my 1st and 2nd year of uni I did play this every day(sometimes more than once).

  • This was always the antedote to a bad "trip" the next morning. Her voice would always bring us down to a smooth landing. Hell, we weren't even on the Continent, and yet we needed her reassuring voice to bring us in, a long, long time ago.

I only wish I could have have turned my eldest son on to this before I lost him last February. Jason, my son, are you there?

  • it wasn't written for joan baez, but for sara dylan

  • Dylan's artistry written specifically for Joan and Joan sings it so heartfelt . Perfection.

  • Thank you, Joan Baez, for reminding us that purity, no matter how unconventional, is always pure – and that corruption, even when accepted by nearly everyone, is always corrupt. This is so hard to be aware of and to act upon every day!

In Sad Eyed Lady, Dylan has given us a song with deep roots...you have given it wings!

  • me encanta esta version tambien joan baez tiene una linda voz, pero me quedo con la de dylan

  • With your mercury mouth in the missionary times,

And your eyes like smoke and your prayers like rhymes,

And your silver cross, and your voice like chimes,

Oh, who among them do they think could bury you?

With your pockets well protected at last,

And your streetcar visions which you place on the grass,

And your flesh like silk, and your face like glass,

Who among them do they think could carry you?

  • With your sheets like metal and your belt like lace,

And your deck of cards missing the jack and the ace,

And your basement clothes and your hollow face,

Who among them can think he could outguess you?

With your silhouette when the sunlight dims

Into your eyes where the moonlight swims,

And your match-book songs and your gypsy hymns,

Who among them would try to impress you?

  • The kings of Tyrus with their convict list

Are waiting in line for their geranium kiss,

And you wouldn't know it would happen like this,

But who among them really wants just to kiss you?

With your childhood flames on your midnight rug,

And your Spanish manners and your mother's drugs,

And your cowboy mouth and your curfew plugs,

Who among them do you think could resist you?

  • Oh, the farmers and the businessmen, they all did decide

To show you the dead angels that they used to hide.

But why did they pick you to sympathize with their side?

Oh, how could they ever mistake you?

They wished you'd accepted the blame for the farm,

But with the sea at your feet and the phony false alarm,

And with the child of a hoodlum wrapped up in your arms,

How could they ever, ever persuade you?

  • With your sheet-metal memory of Cannery Row,

And your magazine-husband who one day just had to go,

And your gentleness now, which you just can't help but show,

Who among them do you think would employ you?

Now you stand with your thief, you're on his parole

With your holy medallion which your fingertips fold,

And your saintlike face and your ghostlike soul,

Oh, who among them do you think could destroy you

  • Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands,

Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes,

My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums,

Should I leave them by your gate,

Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

  • que cancion mas hermosa!!!!!! nopasa de moda.....

  • Thank you Thank you!!!! I was 14 and going through my mom's records, and when this song came on I couldn't move!!!! I loved it. I've always been very proud of that :) Joan's version is incredible.

  • it sounds like she will keep on singing...

I wonder if there are more verses than on the album, must be, because it is so much longer. I'll have to check it out sometime.

  • @tinacornell1 yes, YouTube would not give me another minute and a half for the song to finish. Yes, there is an end to the song. It doesn`t fade out.

  • @Scout4Me1 You are right the song originaly has 13mn time (sorry i am french )

  • I simply LOVE this song! So very sad and yet so filled with pure love...

  • @lenahjonsson ...a oh so lovely lovesong for our 42 long love beginning with a never to be forgotten goodnight kiss on a late warm August summer night in a car in the Main Street...of a small town.

  • @8733hans Sweet....!

  • i like both dylan an joans take...

  • Sublime !

  • Sad-eyed lady always makes me cry.... Very special memories...

  • @lenahjonsson Yes, I understand your sentiments. Joan sings it very sadly. Take care!

  • @Scout4Me1 You too, love!

  • @Scout4Me1 That was a remarkably sweet and considerate answer, my unknown friend - thanks for that as well as for the song.

  • @Scout4Me1 Check out the Richie Havens version of Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands. It is absolutely the best version I've heard. There's a couple songs on Youtube.

  • I adore this song, and the album, Diamonds and Rust. It's too bad you couldn't include a collage, rather than use one image for the entire song. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks a lot, Scout4Me1: this cover makes me goosey all over as did the original 30 years ago...

  • "Your Mercury mouth." Look at the shade of lipstick favored by young Latinas today.

  • Anybody have the Richie Haven's cover from Mixed Bag 2? Very personal.

  • @chinton1945 I think it's on youtube, titled Sad Eyed Lady from Mixed Bag II 1974

  • This is a beautiful cover. I love Dylan, but I find the original hard to listen to even though I usually love his rough, raw voice. This really eminates the true, desired melody of the song.

I feel sorry for Joan. Didn't she break up with Bob the same year he married Sara? And yet she did a cover of the song he wrote for his new wife... poor woman. Poor Sara too, all he put her through.

On a more posative note, at least his music is beautiful!

  • @SarahDylanA2J all he put her through? they loved each other dearly; we'll never understand the 'complexity' of it all, even though we think we can

  • Beautiful. Thank you for posting.

  • perfect

    thanks for posting...

  • And your Spanish manners and your Mother's drugs.

I don't know what all this means, but I like it.

    Thanks for the post.

  • this is amazing!! thanks for posting this! this is the first time ive ever heard joan cover this and i LOOOOVE it! im sure ill be back for many more visits to have a listen-
