i want to play the bass guitar, the 6 string to be exact. how many strings should i start out with first? would you recommend beginning with the 4 string bass and moving up, or just starting out with the 6 string bass?

Only ever buy a six string bass if you ever intend on actually using the six strings. I know that sounds obvious but most people buy certain guitars/basses purely because their heroes use them instead of buying what's beneficial to them in terms of what they want to play and how they want to play it. I use a four string and only ever need the four strings.

Start off with a 4 string to get the basics of the bass down. After you get the feel for it, you can work on other styles. Taping, funky slap grooves, speed metal, what ever suites you. then you can move on to 5 strings and 6, 8, 12 and so on. It takes time to get use to the feel for a 6 string mainly because its crazy larger, heavier and harder to hit all strings.

i disagree, if you get a 4 string first then you have to adjust once you make the change, if you start with a 6 then that would be all youd know wouldnt be heavier/larger cause thats what youre used to.. if thats what you want in the end. i started on a four string and got a 6er around a year later i use them both for different things. whatever you start out on just make sure you learn the basics and do lots of excercises to get used to the fingerboard same applies to 4's as 6's
