  • Haha. Glee got nothin on them...

  • lol unlike glee, these guys don't need max auto tune >:)

  • @RenaissanceTuber glee was NOT using auto tune. i first thought that Glee was using auto tune, but i was researching A LOT, and found that they weren't.

  • That guy singing open arms in a lead in The Westminster chorus

  • this guy sings Don't Stop beleivin so well!!! so does the girl:-) super good medley!!!

  • But in all honesty, this aired before Glee's Journey medley. Glee breaks their seasons in two. So even though it was the end of season 1 when Glee did it, it was the second half of season 1. This show was like December :)

  • @FuchsiaKnight This wasn't ripped off at all. There are many many differences between this one and Glee's. However, I do say the Beelzebubs ripped off the SoCal VoCal's arrangement of "When I Get You Alone" when they sang it with Darren Criss on Glee.

  • @Maestrojosh87 I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say either one ripped off the either. I was just trying to say that this definitely didn't steal the idea from Glee, since it came first. But I didn't mean to imply that Glee ripped them off.

  • David is the man!

  • I love Journey

  • the bass is so good

  • 2:18 I love the guy beat boxing

  • These guys are just so cute...

  • honestly my only problem with this performance was the vocal percussionist... he was just... taking himself waaaaay too seriously and, in my opinion, it just left me distracted. I was watching him flail around rather than focusing on the music

  • WOO!!!

  • the guy who did the open arms part was amazing...now excuse me while i go clean up my chair

  • The lead lacks the raw vocal power of Steve Perry, but....y'know, so do most singers in the world :P

  • is there any available arrangement of this? or anything remotely similar?

  • the second guy sounds like nph!!!!!

  • They probably did that at 2:05 so that the song wasn't to long.

  • 2:05 they slipped

  • watch the girls expression at 2:05, its hilarious!!!

  • 6 people don't have lives

  • Won** wow

  • They should have one

  • so much better than stupid glee

  • The guy who does the guitar solo, when he sings Open Arms, his voice is ridiculous, esp. at 1:22. Wow! And the bass singer's face at 2:37 is hilarious!

  • @greg2725d its 1:37 and 2:22

  • dont get me wrong, this group is pretty good, but i bet the winner of the show is probably the group that sings the most popular songs lol i enjoyed this though ;)

  • What is the name of the lead tenor? The one in the glasses. He's the best single singer I've ever seen in any A Capella group (except maybe the blonde in Rockapella)

  • @Kruezoraxe His name is Payson Lewis.

  • im a BIG fan of Journey!!This was pretty awesome!!

  • I have.. CHILLS!!

  • ENUNCIATE, dammit! It's not "lying be sigh Jew."

  • Now, put the guy with the glasses, with all of Nota and a few guys from the Bubs, that would be a power-group of Acappella.

  • @ellis12241 And Courtney from Noteworthy/Backbeats =]

  • A cappela guitar solo. That's fuckin' talent.

  • its that bloke from westminster!

  • A Capella, wooow

  • 4 people stopped believin

  • wow!! this is amazing! :D

  • so...glee did a cover of this

  • i love it when people argue

  • just about pissed myself at 2:38-39 watching the bass guy xDDD

  • Rakita ftw. Seriously.

  • can anyone tell me who the epic soloist with glasses is? he's stupendous...

  • @chimaera27

Dan Payson-Lewis aka Payson Lewis, recently seen on "How I Met Your Mother", "Rules of Engagement" and "Victorious"

  • awesome

  • This is so much better than the Glee version

  • ok so glee did a cover of every journey song ever so a group doing a medly of one of the greatist bands ever isnt stupid...

  • that also is one of my favorite performances of this season....they were really a great group!

  • Still my favorite performance of this season. :)

  • y do all guys doing bass make such odd faces lol

  • Two people don't need it like they wanted it...it's sad but true: they stopped believing.

  • Wahooooooooooooo love it!!! Go Rakita!!!!! xxx

  • that guitar solo.. loved it hahha

  • Wasn't that blond with the pink sparkly skirt also in the Backbeats with Courtney from Noteworthy????

  • @zippy0099 yes, Kelley Jakle is in both groups.

  • @myposchange - So basically the Backbeats was set up as an "all star" group? I can't believe they didn't win against Committed and Street Corner Symphony. I mean Courtney, Johanna, Kelley, and having exactly 5 girls and 5 guys? Seams on paper like an unbeatable group, but America liked Boyz 2 Men part 2 more I guess.

  • @zippy0099 yes Kenton Chen assembled a team of superstars picked from rival vocal groups across the country. I'm sure you agree, as the judges did, that he picked an incredible roster. I loved all the finalists. I'm also glad that Committed won. It's about time that real soul and harmony was brought back to the airwaves, not this crappy version of "rnb" that's been on the charts since the mid 90's & no autotune! I hope The Backbeats continue together. They're remarkable.

  • I hate it when people say oh this ripped off this show. What all of you idiots are debating on is who ripped who off when both performed covers of a song that has been around since the 80's. Seriously soon people will be adding that both shows ripped off the scrubs episode with the air guitar to Journey. I guess ignorance is bliss for some people its just not for me I guess.

  • @diclonisvector Also mad props to them... cause they did it LIVE where in shows... those kids get many takes then recording studio time... to sound good for the show.

  • @diclonisvector The Air Guitar was to bostons 'More than a feeling'.......cmon man

  • so... glee-ish :)

  • SoCals are actually the part of SoCals Vocals, the acapella group from USC. The Journey song has been done by them long before Sing Off or Glee. I think it was also in their album which they came out with a few years back.

  • mouth solo=beast.

  • Kelly jakle is so hott

  • They may not have ripped Glee of but they certainly did it better. No Autotune. No girl soprano hitting the Steve Perry high notes (Sorry that's cheating) and no musical accompaniment.

  • Glee came out before this show, so Glee did Don't Stop Believing first. ;)

They are both great shows though.

  • @NDawgHoyt Unfortunately Glee also auto-tune the singers so this is what accapella don't stop believing should really sound like.

  • @Linxer22 they actually don't use auto-tune it's just something called layering, they make them sing the song a few times, then layer there voices over each other to make it sound stronger, that's all they do, it's not auto tune, just a more powerful version of there original singers, and that's basically just what a lot of microphones do, so ha on the people who just assume that they use autotune.

anyway, they didn't "rip this off the show, glee's there to inspire people to do stuff like this!

  • @tartarcreamxx No, Glee actually do use auto-tune, especially the guy who plays Finn, listen to when they sang, "its my life". The auto-tune can be clearly heard. When they do layering its only to enhance the voice to make it stronger. But listen to some of the songs they sing, you can clearly hear the warping of the voice that is side effect of auto-tune. Even Charice and Lea Michelle, who are probably two people who don'tt need to use auto-tune, still use it when they sang "Telephone."

  • @Linxer22 they use autotune on the songs where there is autotune in the original song, because they're doing it in the style of that song, eg, when they sung "tik tok" by Ke$ha that songs autotuned to death, so is telephone, and they can't cover an autotuned song, in the same format as is, without autotune, that's the only reason they use it on those songs, they have this thing called talent.

  • @tartarcreamxx Again, as I said go look for the glee cover of "its my life" by bon jovi, That song is not meant to be sang in auto-tune, but the moment Finn opened his mouth, you could instantly hear his voice was heavily auto-tune. And no, you could actually sing many songs that are originally sung in auto-tune without auto-tune. Prime example, when Chris Daughtry covered Lady Gagas "Poker Face", he sang it in acoustic style and without auto-tune. And it sounded pretty good as well.

  • @Linxer22 it's my life" was layering and yes you can sing originally autotuned songs without autotine, but not in the same style of the original, as you said "chris Daughtry" sang it in acoustic style, not the autotuned style, which in order to make it sound right, would require autotune, i think you need to accept that the cast aren't disney stars or half the singers in the charts right now, they can actually sing, move on.

  • @tartarcreamxx haha..thats funny, the only thing i have to accept is that when they made glee i thought they would cast people who are good singers.....they got me good...I dunno what you think layering is supposed to sound but its suppose to make singers voice stronger but yet sound natural...there was nothing natural in the sound that came out of Finns mouth when they sang "its my life."..sounds like a voice from a black eye peas song...

  • @Linxer22 *sigh*, you really are stubborn, you'd think i'd insulted you or something, i only told you, that they don't use autotune on the songs they don't have to, it was natural, it's just just different from live songs, because it's sung in a studio, where the acoustic's are different from on a live stage. run along now.

  • @tartarcreamxx nice, is it me who's acting all insulted? I'm critisizing a show that I believe should have hired better singers suited for a show about a "glee club", you're the one who is stubbornly rejecting any suggestion that some of the show singers aren't as great as they try to portray them to be and that they use electronic aid to hide that....besides, i'm not the one who had stooped down to the level of using condescending phrases when replying....

  • @Linxer22 yes it is you who's acting all insulted, i'm just stating the facts that they don't use autotune (exept when they have to because it's in the original), and you're stubbornly refusing to accept it, you could just say, oh ok, well thank's for telling me, but you won't, because you seem to have a compulsive need to be right, do tell me, have you looked it up?, read article over article about it?.... no?, well i have, also "condescending phrases" no, that's just my english dear

  • @tartarcreamxx And why would I thank you for telling me something which I believe is wrong. I don't know about you but I can clearly here the auto-tune when they play their songs, they didn't really try to hide it that much, and what exactly did your extensive research tell you, that they don't use auto-tune on songs that originally aren't, I already gave you an example that earlier that debunk that. I don't believe I've read a proper musical analysis paper that claims that they don't use it.

  • @tartarcreamxx I don't believe those articles even exists, I highly doubt a music professor would take the time to do that anyway, what i've read though is critics complaining that the show is using way to much of it in their songs, which just makes me realize that i'm not the only way thinking that they rely on auto-tune too much considering the type of show it's supposed to be. I'm more surprise how much you firmly believe the glee cast are really good singers.

  • @tartarcreamxx They can sing, but thats all I can say, I admit one or two of them are pretty good, but the rest aren't as impressive, they are not bad singers but they certainly are not award winning chorale singers that compete in competitions. Here's a question, since all this stem from watching this video, do you actually believe they could compete in a competition against groups from say "the sing-off." They can't, they can sing by there own right, but they are not good enough to compete.

  • @NDawgHoyt :The resemblance to Glee is uncanny: red and black outfits, similar choreography, a male and a female sharing the lead vocals with the man singing the first line, the woman singing the second line, and then both of them singing together.

  • they should've been top 2 ( nota sucks! )

  • Wow Glee ripped this show off hard.

  • @Garris13 Glee original run - May 19th, 2009. The Sing Off original run - December 14th, 2009. Glee originally aired 7 months before The Sing Off. If anyone ripped off anyone, it's The Sing Off.

  • @tsl141 Yeah, right. They (SoCal Vocals - the USC a capella group the SoCals are formed from) did it way back in 2005. It was part of their "Get In. ROCK. Get Out" album. Glee wasn't even conceived back then.

  • @vaivij

Just to add on, The SoCals are a combination of 2 USC a capella groups. The SoCal VoCals and Reverse Osmosis.

  • @behemoth6079

The SoCals are current and alumni members of the USC SoCal Vocals.

  • @essbeth

I could have sworn I'd seen a couple of them on Reverse Osmosis. My apologies if I'm wrong.

  • @vaivij maybe you thinkin bout it backwardo? Glee based on them perhaps? I'm Just Sayain...

  • @tsl141 Here's the thing though, The Sing Off doesn't auto-tune the singers! This is what don't stop believing accapella should really sound like.

  • @tsl141 and acapella was started by the whiffenpoofs

  • 2:21 FTW!

  • they look to white and too rich -_-

  • The only problem I think this had was the girl singing in Open Arms, she was off. But I still loved this performance. My favorite after Nota's Down!

  • can one person be on two different season? i think one of the chicks here is on season 2 also.

  • @cubsfanatic1 Kelly Jakle, a member of the SoCal Vocals was part of the SoCals. She is currently a member of the Backbeats on Season 2.

  • Meh... their okay I guess, but their too bobby, and cheesy. Too much like glee, their good, but just not my thing. :)

  • Uuggh, I hate that the audience won't shut up! I wanna hear the song, not them clapping

  • I just fell in love at 0:47

  • sooo good!! the male lead has an amazing voice, wow. and the guitar solo made me lollll =]

  • They were stacked with talent.

  • Absurd. Someone must be punished for this. It's too good.

  • love this performance!!!!!!!!

  • this amazing..and i usually hate journey covers!!!

  • i think they should of one. i mean i lov nota, dont get me wrong, but i loved tese guys

  • I just about had a heart-attack when they started singing Journey XD

That was the most epic guitar solo ever..

  • I literally screamed, "That was awesome!!" :D

  • GLEE! This was before glee though wasn't it?

  • @ItBeKristi it was after

  • @dc3fan2003 it was before glee's mashup of journey songs but after glee aired on television

  • @NickBlack86 i meant that their rendition of Dont Stop Believing was after glee's version came out

  • Yeah, the Beach Boys and the Bee Gees had some high ass voices, too. It can be done.

  • glee?

  • those white boys got some high ass voices

  • Ha! Love it! Glee surely must have been inspired!

  • I agree that they should have made it furthur in the competition... they are very talented.

  • how does it feel to be the only one to dislike? bet it sucks.

  • 1:35 BEST SONG

  • was this performance before or after glee? lol

  • Okay, the guitar solo was very, very cool. Strong work guy.

  • Don't stop believing was amazing!

  • i was so mad when they left. Voices of Lee sucked, and they didn't deserve to get to the finale >:(

  • Alright! who was the one person who has no taste in music and disliked this video?!?!?!?!

  • hahah loved the guitar solo

  • 0:45 - The way they sang "Open Arms" gave me goosebumps!!!!

  • what a powerful opening for the song, and seriously, i like this performance way better than glee. they balance better and use the voices to their strenths. not to mention the lead for don't stop believing sounds EXACTLY like the original. what a show!! i would so pay to see them live

  • nota all the way

  • Considering this aired last December, and Glee's version of DSB aired in May of that year (and was recorded earlier), I fail to see how Glee stole the song from the Socals. I love this group, but if anything, they were trying to capitalize off Glee's success.

  • amazing guitar /singing solo its incredible

  • glee = SHIT

    SoCals are awsome sauce.!!!

they are the original acapella version, so glee should just stuff itin a porta-potty!!

  • notas version of lean on me was better. and their jacson 5 medly

  • i love this show, don't get me wrong. but i feel like they are trying too hard to capitalize on glee's success, so they do songs like ":dont stop believing" and make it almost identical to the glee version.

  • Good thing Anyway You Want It and Don't Stop Believing sound EXACTLY like the glee cast version. They should sue Glee for stealing....lmao

  • Guitar Solo-Orgasmic lol

  • Of all the performances from all the groups (and I've watched them all many times), this is the one I keep coming back to . Solid, non-gimmicky performance. You keep hearing things each time you didn't hear before. These guys should have won.

  • Ok, I just watched Glee's version of DSB again, and now I definetely think they got the idea from SoCals. There are just too many similarities to be coincendental, but they made it just different enough that SoCal couldn't sue Glee for plagarisim.

  • I hate when judges pick things. I was in for the Socals, Noteworthy, and the Beelzebubs in the top three, but nooooo. Nota won. Don't even understand that one.

  • Great

  • oh my goodyness! Greatest representation of Journey i have ever heard in my life! Its so freakin amazing how they use nothing more than their voices to do all that!!!

The one person that disliked this has a serious stick up their ass

  • i literally get chills going down my spine when that one guy comes in for the guitar solo during Don't Stop Believing! So AWESOME!!!!

  • love these guyz!!!

  • Shoot. Nice mash-up!

(Wait...this was before the Glee episode, right....?)

  • Forgot about this performance, glee's version is pretty close to this. I'd say glee might have stole this from them

  • @Drtbaggae I think they may have... I saw a video of the SoCals singing DSB in 2008. It was a similar version that they did here, just with more people.

  • @Drtbaggae : I wouldn't be at all surprised if Glee got the idea from this version. When the guy was singing the first line of "Don't Stop Believing," I was thinking to myself, "if a girl sings the next line, then I'll know where Glee got the idea," and lo and behold! The choreography was almost identical as well.

  • @Drtbaggae : and they're even wearing red and black like in Glee!

  • it wasnt a copy if glee thats how most acapella groups have recorded this song before glee

  • on dont stop belivin the guy with the glasses was messing with his tones to much

  • i can't believe they got voted off on this show after this performance! they soooo shouldda been in the finals

  • I love 2:22....look at boy with the stripes...he jammin with his drum

  • I sware I get goose bumps when I watch this. They were the best

  • wow great job!!

  • I have said before... they should have won!! they were awesome, and this song(s) prove it! =)

  • I loved this performance, but the girl in the Open Arms part wasn't in the right key. Too low then too high. Kind of drowned the guy out. But it's still one of my favorite performances

  • @narutoguy03 Yeah, the flat notes are a bit earhurty alright.

  • This was one of my favorite performances of the entire competition. I love Journey and they were my favorites for the competition for sure. I wasn't crazy about the girl who sang Don't Stop Believing but that's just me. [Also loved their performance of Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now]

  • they were my FAVORITE group! I think they should have won! LOVE IT!, thanks for posting =)

  • It was a solid medley, but I still like Beelzebubs' medley of The Who better.

  • copy of glee at the end...

  • I love this songg(:

  • they're heka good and i like their dont stop believin but i think their transition isnt as smooth as the other groups just my opinion

  • Comment removed

  • so damn good

  • and whats the glasses guy`s name? he is so good!

  • Dan Payson-Lewis

  • they were so much better than voices of lee! why were they eliminated??

  • I was shocked and upset myself! They were my FAVORITE group. They have such great presence and personality on stage. And ALL of them can sing well, unlike Voices of Lee, which depends mostly on the brown-haired girl ( the rest are like back-up singers). My favorite singers in the SoCals are the pretty blonde-haired girl and the lead guy with the glasses. So amazing!

  • Just their voices give me chills they are awesome

  • OMG! I love the guitar solo in Don't Stop Believin'
